Well, Mike ran in to problems getting ldjam.com working properly with about 12 hours left in the Compo, so this is the backup plan.

Floor is Lava

by RedPanda - Compo Entry

Floor is Lava! - Favorite past time of kids and adults of all ages!
Don't you want to happily hop from one piece of furniture onto another in an attempt to save your life! That's it! Feel the thrill as lava is rising up, flooding the room and burning anything it touches!

Rules:
* Run! And do it fast!
* Jump! And do it high!
* Don't touch the lava!
* Get to the green orb to teleport away!

Wait but how do I move?

Do you even human? Alright here's some tips:
* WASD - move around
* Mouse - look around
* Space - jump around

Okay so here's the deal, I couldn't find time on the 1st day, so I worked for like few hours building a prototype with assets from internet and Unity. On day 2 I was severely demotivated AND I overslept for half a day. But I managed to implement all the menus, and model 2 levels in Blender. I even added a bit of sound!

Why do I tell you this? Well, coz I feel like you might want to know why game only has 2 short levels.
BUT ALSO, because, even if you're like me, demotivated, don't have enough time, many personal and not issues IRL, you can still make something resembling a game!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tools used:

* OS: Windows 10 (My daily driver is Arch Linux, but I was lazy (and a bit scared to try out Linux Unity Editor blindly), so next time :D )
* Engine: Unity Personal (I almost homebrew my own very simple 3D engine in C++, but alas, not enough time)
* Lang: C#
* IDE: MS Visual Studio 2015 Community
* 3D Modelling: Blender
* 2D Art: Paint.NET ("Art")
* Music: Procedurally generated with: http://www.fakemusicgenerator.com/
* Audio: My mouth + Audacity
* Version Control: Git and Bitbucket
* Additional codebase: Unity Standard Assets (for FPS Character Controller and Image Effects)

Special thanks:
* @quaternius for his model pack that allowed me to rapidly prototype.
* me, for not giving up this time

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oh and one last thing, the code is dreadful. I was hacking away like there's no tomorrow.

I really like the idea and the graphics look awesome! specially the lava.
The only problem i find is knowing the correct path, sometimes i found myself just looking at the room trying to find a way to the exit instead of jumping.
I love it

Very nice idea! Graphics are cool, but it is lacking a bit in the sound department.
It would be nice to have a short counter at the beginning of the game so you could look around for a bit (without being able to move).

Well done!

For me it's a bit too fast ,but except that this is a really good game

Always a fun concept. Done many times before, but if it's fun why not. I don't see a reason for all the stress and fast rising lava. It's about finding the correct path and doing the jumps is hard enough without the lava.

Really cool idea, and the graphics are nice. I felt like the lava rose a bit too fast, you really had to move quickly if you wanted to reach the green orb. Other than that its a great game, nice job!

Fun concept but too hard. Also the character is only about 2 feet tall?

@everyone thanks so much! And yeah I know it's a bit to hard, didn't have time to playtest enough to balance lava speed.

@Drtizzle awesome idea, I wannted to add like an arrow to show you the way, but alas, time was short.

@avalkyrie yeah, you're like a kid (than's an excuse really, it's just if the character was real life size, it would be hard to make a fun paltformer in a single room. Adults are too big to hop on furniture)

Interesting game. As others have said, little to no direction and fast rising lava makes it a bit tough. Also, the child sounds particularly man-ish for someone so small. Nice work, though!

Nice game, well done with theg raphics. It seems a bit tricky to find an escape path, but still, nicely done!

Added WebGL build! Looks like Antialiasing doesn't work on it well.

I feel dumb, but I can't get to the orb on the first level. I got to the top of the couch and couldn't make the jump to the shelf. Maybe I did it wrong.

@JimmothySanchez, try to jump on TV and get the higher ground. And it's not you, it's me not playtesting it :P

Very difficult game lava rises really fast but that doesnt detract from my enjoyment of it!

Pretty cool, it's not easy to figure out where to go after getting on the couch though.

Nice entry, I could see this becoming a more full fledged game if you were going to take it further. Although the assets and art are minimalist, I feel like you've done well with the graphical style and making the room look "hot".

The audio needs a little work, as others have said, it sounds like I'm a very manly baby (to be fair it honestly gave me a good laugh).

I would love to see more.

10/10 would man baby parkour again

Difficult and cool. The movement was also quite nice with a good feeling.

A nice bit of tactical platforming! Maybe the character's height problem could be solved if the player couldn't jump as high, but could also climb on things :)

RedPanda says ...
Dec 13, 2016 @ 11:12pm

@alfadur I thought about being able to climb, but climbing is not as fast paced :P

Nice game! On the contrary to some others i liked that i didn't make it on the first try (level 1).

Nice job, dude! Pretty and very tense. I just suck at it.
Never give up! :)

Good game, even though at first you have no idea what to do and how to do it. After playing for a few minutes, I have been able to complete both levels. I think that the time given to complete them was just about enough.
Good choice of music and as much as I hated the sound of you dying, the sound after completing the level has been that much more rewarding.

Nice challenge. Never thought to make an actual game from this child game. The idea is pretty funny and well executed. Neat job, especially for such a short time !

I actually suck and can't beat the first level, but I still enjoyed it! This is a good way to fit the theme into a platformer. I think the character might have been better themed as a cat or some other small animal that can jump, though having a super-baby that grunts like a dude is pretty wonderful. The lava is definitely tense, though I think a slow rise would make it more impactful. Lava grows so quickly you basically don't notice it until you're dead.

Beautiful memory of childhood when we used to play with our young imagination that the floor is lava and we have to jump from one imaginary platform to another. Nice idea, well executed. Creative way to work the theme.

It's that you wrote in the comments that jumping from the TV to the bookcase would work because I had given up :) Got both levels quickly after that. Nice set design and visuals.Indeed very short but a fun diversion. Congrats on finishing.
