Death Room 4000

by DalesDiscountTires - Jam Entry

Note: If you have an issue with the web versions resolution due to monitor size please use the download. It has adjustable resolutions. Thanks.

Software used
Unity
http://www.bfxr.net/ to create all the sound except the applause and the song.
See the bottom of the description for a link to the song.

Its a platformer based in a game show where everything tries to kill you. Some features had to be cut such as the announcer and a checkpoint system but these will be added in at a later date.
How to play
WASD to move
Space to jump/double jump
left mouse click or J to shoot
or play with a USB controller!
shoot turrets to destroy them, grab prize tickets and make your way to the end of the level.
The cut features will be added in the coming weeks.
This is our first time entering the jam. Please leave feedback!

Change Log
Fixed an issue with the resolution and camera that was obstructing the players view in the web version.
Fixed an issue where you couldn't see the flames on the flamethrowers.
Added a temporary fix so players can no longer use an exploit to skip a portion of the level.
Added a permanent fix to the issue above and removed the temporary saws to keep players from doing the exploit.
Fixed a bug with collision that caused players to have tons of wall collision and be able to jump up the left wall forever. Jumping feels better because of it.
Fixed an issue that caused flames to be invisible.
Fixed an issue that caused bullets to be destroyed as soon as a turret fires them.
Fixed an issue where players could fall through a portion of the level.

EDIT: Hey! I'd just like to point out - some of you are complimenting the music, but we did NOT make it (nor are we being judged in the sound category), but it's made available under an attribution license so, here's the attribution -> The background music is a song called 'Epic Song', by BoxCatGames, available here: http://freemusicarchive.org/music/BoxCat_Games/Nameless_the_Hackers_RPG_Soundtrack/BoxCat_Games_-_Nameless-_the_Hackers_RPG_Soundtrack_-_10_Epic_Song . Thanks for all of the positive comments and feedback, and check them out if you dig the song!

So much salt, hitbox not clear but good game

Dec 13, 2016 @ 9:15am

Thanks man! Could you be a bit more clear about the hitbox issue? is it the player? I'd love to hear your feedback and fix it in future versions.

So hard..... You could go to the left and go unlimited jump to the top? cool game though...

Cool game, and well-made! Though I can agree about the hitbox issue, feels like spiked wheels have square colliders or something, so you die even when you don't visually collide with them. The game is very hard right from the start, I could not get very far, though I guess that's why it's called DEATH room :)

Dec 13, 2016 @ 9:30am

@Oxeren Thanks for the feedback man! The sawblades were originally using polygon colliders but i had to remove them because of performance issues. Ill make the circle colliders smaller in future versions.

Yeah the hitboxes feel a little rough, but the dancing man kept me motivated. I still failed miserably though, great game though :)

The controls are really hard to get used to because the character doesn't keep any momentum. The difficulty curve felt really weird because each obstacle seemed to have the same difficulty but the earlier ones became easier because I played them more not because I learned the controls. I think this game really needs a sense of flow. The character moves really fast but you can’t speed through obstacles you have to stand and wait. I also noticed that you have a ton of friction when falling against walls and I hope that it is a bug. Having a slower difficulty curve or checkpoints would make this game a lot more playable having neither makes me a little disappointed because I would like to see more of the game. I might check back later to see if checkpoints are implemented because I want to play more of the level not the same sections over and over (:

This game really challenging, just like playing Super Mario super hard mode.. i think should adjust the level by level instead.

Dec 13, 2016 @ 10:11am

@Mipo Thanks for the feedback! The wall friction is definitely a bug and should be fixed pretty soon. Checkpoints and level design changes will be in an updated version of the game sometime in the coming weeks.

I never play these games so I'm pretty horrible but! Man the music was great haha, it kept me going. I had a lot of deaths and did not finish the game but it was fun! Makes me want to play more games like this.

Great job on the visuals and gameplay. The movement felt good and the jumping was spot on for me.

Good job :)

One of my favorites so far.

I am a real sucker for games with tight controls and you pretty much nailed it. The game hat a lot of bite so I wasn't able to clear it but since you immediately restart after dying (reference to Super Meat Boy?) it keeps you motivated. I haven't found out why you can shoot, but maybe that comes later.

The only issue that really nagged me was that the game does not support D-Pad. Playing a tight retro game like this with an analog stick really is a crime.

Hitbox is pretty bad, but damn! This is like super meat boy! Really hard. Music and graphics are good.

Addendum: Don't listen too much to people that say the game is too hard. I am sure you meant it that way. Super Meatboy was hard by design and people love it for that.

"Deathbox 4000"...haha, yeah, aptly named. Solid all round game, too hard for me though. But I do suck at platforming :p

Dec 13, 2016 @ 12:27pm

@Cerno_b thanks for the feedback. We're glad you enjoyed it! Super Meatboy was a huge inspiration and personally my favorite platformer (even over Super Mario World sue me) The difficulty is on purpose. The updated level design will have it ramp up slower but it will still be very hard i assure you. Thanks for playing!

Rather fun, digging the graphics and audio, sadly Unity WebGL lags on my machines for some reason so I couldn't get full enjoyment but I voted to what I thought it would be like if my machine was decent :D. Interesting mechanics, nice gameplay, solid difficulty curve, well done! Enjoyed it alot, (despite my issues >.<)

I really like the theme of the game- has an 80s sci fi retro feeling to it, the title as well. I enjoyed the clapping when you pick up things etc.

Very difficult and punishing! I did like how fast you respawn though- no clicking restart or a game over screen keeps things moving fluidly. Nice work!

Dec 14, 2016 @ 3:40am

Cool, Managed to get to flames. Gave up.

Awesome game! Really challenging. Every time you clear an obstacle you feel so proud of yourself. Music made me happy.

Awesome game. Hard as hell, but hey, it's just a room. The level design could have a bit of work and, obviously, if you keep up with the project, some tweeks here and there with the gameplay would be very welcome. Also, adding some noob stages or all you will ever hear is "it's so difficult I couldn't stop crying". Check out the game I made with a similar pace, it might give you some ideas (or not): https://nonamefornow.itch.io/sr (sorry if it is inappropriate, but I really think it is relevant for your work there). I will surely borrow some of yours.
Awesome job! Will probably come back for more.

Hey! Great job! I love all the death! Great job on the sound fx, and it feels really smooth. I wasn't able to get very far but I'm bad at jumping. I can't even finish the first level of Geometry dash! Great game!

Hard game, but still fun. Great respawn time. Nothing is worse than dying a ton and having to wait 2 seconds before you can play again, so I appreciate that! The graphics are nice! The left and right movement feels a little floaty to me -- meaning it's hard to control. Definitely adds to the difficulty in a good way at times, but it also feels unfair sometimes.

I think what this really needs is a check point system. That would solve so many problems, no matter how hard the game is. At any rate, you guys should continue working on this. It's a great start.

Dec 16, 2016 @ 12:17am

Ah really good hardcore platformer ! I liked it ! Reath Room 4000 means that we are supposed to die 4000 times before succeeding ? :D

The hitbox was maybe just a bit exaggerated.

platforming works really well, all the traps seem to work as intended. The sound was pleasant. Sort of reminds me of "I want to be the guy".

Dec 25, 2016 @ 3:03pm

Really difficult game but I'm sure that was the intention :P Good job!

Very challenging game! I included it in my compilation video series of the Ludum Dare 37 games, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/3MOSAwxK9LQ
