Well, Mike ran in to problems getting working properly with about 12 hours left in the Compo, so this is the backup plan.

Escape The Room

Solve the maze to escape the room.
Collect gold to obtain helpful items.


Use arrow keys, [esc] and [enter] to navigate.

[1-9] - use or drop item
[g] - pick up an item
[e] - toggle examine mode

Tools used

Intellij ide


Level 3 fixed.
Shop how has fixed prices.
Key lags fixed?
Level 4 added.
Added lighter and burnt bushes.
Better movement mechanics.

Nice relaxing game. I completed two rooms, but I got stuck in the big maze one. There were boxes that could only be pushed left or right in vertical hallways and I was unable to get past those.

Things I liked:
-The ASCII art aesthetic is always cool to see, and the lighting system was a very nice touch, it makes it look quite "professional."

Things I didn't like as much:
-I played the OS/X version, and it was super laggy for some reason. I think it took half a second or more to register each key press. This got too unbearable so I stopped after the first room.
-The shop having randomized prices every time you visit is pretty silly, because I was able to leave and revisit it multiple times to get a low price on each item. If you want to keep the randomness, you could make shops one-visit only or something.

Overall, I think this is a really good start of a game. Right now it doesn't seem like you do much, but with more items that interact with each other or puzzles of some sort, this could be pretty awesome, especially if you use the lighting as a more central mechanic somehow because, again, it is really cool.

Nice little ascii-style puzzle game! I couldn't get past the 3rd floor as well. Music is soothing. It felt weirdly laggy at times? Not sure what the deal was there.

This was amazing. First i thought it would bore me, ... but the lighting was aMAZEing, i enjoyed the graphics, the controls, the everything :D nice work man!
but i did not really understand the examine mode, maybe thats why i got stuck in lvl 3

I loved the entire presentation! The line-of-sight lighting is awesome, and everything read well. I also ran into the horizontal push boxes in vertical hallways issue on the third level and couldn't proceed. Money was probably a little too abundant, though I did enjoy finding all of them.

I love how this game is using a basic version of a dungeon crawler-roguelike engine, with the ascii art, examining, FoV and the like. The game's relaxing to play, the lack of enemies and soothing music helping with that. Improvements: Maybe less random rocks and repeated shop items? Can make it more well meshed and challenging. Also the movements are not super responsive. Overall pretty great :D.

I love the way that the light from the character causes walls and rooms to light and dim realistically, even though it's all represented by ASCII art! It's got a dwarf fortress vibe to it, but it a much more accessible way, and has hints of metroid and zelda. Who knew a bunch of ASCII characters could sum up to such a cool and deep game!

Excellent use of ASCII art! The lighting was really impressive. I didn't find a use for the stones.. but maybe I just didn't play enough? Still, interesting to see an ASCII game that isn't all about fighting and dying. It was very chill and relaxing.

ASCII art was done pretty well, and the music added some effective atmosphere to a sparse experience. Liked the light system. For a game I wished that there was something to do aside from picking up stuff... looking under rocks for a key is a bit sparse on the fun factor, sadly.

@impbox, your java is old. I got the same error with my old Mac, after updating java, everything works well.

A neat little polished game! The ASCII art is simple but cool, and I didn't see any bugs. The puzzles could have been a bit more complex and the controls are kind of quirky, but it's pretty solid!

I've finished the game. Pretty interesting, really liked the music and the puzzles, maybe more complexity to the items would be nice, since I purshased map and key finder every level.

Wow! Not too heavy on the graphics, but still really neat nonetheless. I love the way the rooms light up with my 'vision cone' (at least I think that's what it is). Very cool!

Nice game, I liked it was in Java and used some text based lighting, cool! The movement felt a little weird, like if you hold down a key you basically ran straight into a wall (like in 1 frame). All in all, the whole game was nice and relaxing.

Not bad, I love these type of text mode adventure games. Only thing I didn't like is that it was much too simple. Just find the key and go back to the starting point, which was super easy since the shop gave you everything you needed to win, and the important items (like the key finder and master key) were really cheap. Maybe if you added some enemies or a time limit, it'd be more difficult.

I wouldn't have expected to enjoy this as much as I did. But instead I found myself a bit saddened about completing it.

Some things I thought about in no particular order:

* Give your jar-file a proper name, we are all playing many Ludum Games.

* It would have been neat if one could use 'e' to also toggle out of explore mode.

* I really wanted to burn or dig up be bushes. Maybe buying something from the shop for a lot of coin.

* On one level I bought the map, but I instantly regretted having done that since the dynamic lighting was so nice and the whole exploration kind of got ruined knowing the map.

* I really enjoyed that it was non-violent, but it would have been cool with more types of interactions and possibly dynamic changes.

The music and mood was really good so I'd say you have a really good start here.

I just added lighter to the game. Now you can burn bushes. Also you can now use [e] key to exit examine mode.
Now I'm working on some secret room, hidden after bushes.

ASCII art is always fun. Well done - a good game. I was surprised seeing the lighting system. I had fun playing it. Awesome ++
