Ludum Dare 37 — December 9th-11th, 2016 — Theme: One Room

Well, Mike ran in to problems getting working properly with about 12 hours left in the Compo, so this is the backup plan.

Cursed King's Court

by kraftkar - Compo Entry

My first Ludum Dare. Made with Unity, Gimp, LMMS and Audacity. Thank you for your feedback! :)

Great King, your death is foretold. Death demands your presence in seven days. Divine intervention is your only hope. Pray the Gods notice your greatness! Pray to Lady Luck for opportunities, spend your time and resources wisely! Surely the Gods will intervene if you impress them with great wealth and power?

- activate one of the three cards you can afford, or draw new cards
- time passes real-time
- drawing new cards gives you a small time penalty
- cards cost resources to play
- followers give you resources at the end of each day (10 each follower)
- gather as many resources and followers as you can within the time limit

TIP: You will not get a good score for most games. The effect "Divine Intervention (+1 Day)" is the only way to get a score over 10.000 and win the game. Pick it up if you can afford it. Play fast, there is NO time penalty for activating cards. The more cards you see the more likely you are to get enough cards with Divine Intervention. Stay away from high-cost cards, they will rarely pay themselves back.

Known issues/suggested improvements (nothing game-breaking, will FIX after compo):
- Balance. The game is really hard if you play it as a strategy game! AND really easy if you play it as a Clicker game! :D
- Divine Intervention WILL give you the extra day, but the UI won't update until the next day begins :\ (I forgot)
- Tomes = Books. (Renamed a lot of stuff late in developement)
- Turn-based play-mode would be interesting
- The UI should have a more focused layout
- Missing pause button (Removed before upload since it was buggy and easily exploitable)

Your graphic is beautiful and I personally enjoy the genre and idea.

However- I might be missing something- for a game that needs us to read and consider options, the real time mechanics really harms your game. Not having enough time to actually read is annoying.

It is hard to do anything meaningful while the timer is running out, but otherwise great game.

Nice idea here, just a little hard to look above and determine what your current totals are.

This could be something that I'd love to have as a browser game, handy and ready to play whenever. A pause button would help though. A mobile version would be great as well! I'm going to keep playing this throughout the day :] Great entry!

I loved the innovation but I kinda find myself lost due to real time + luck based gameplay. It is like fortune telling in a sense :D

It was really cool how the audio synced up with the day cycle! I really liked the graphics as well. :)

Cool, but I didn't like that the time passed so fast.

Really cool game! I've played it for quite a bit, but I can't seem to win :(

It was also a bit confusing how they are called tomes on the top, but books in the cards.

Either way, great job!

Love the idea, and the gameplay. Graphics are very nice.
The only thing missing is a better way to see your current resources, and the restart didn't restart the days, so I had to refresh a alot the browser (yes, I know, I was bad at your game, had to restart many times :P) Overall very cool game.

I'm not entirely sure how to play the game, but it seems like an interesting idea! I crashed and burned pretty early. I wish there was a little more feedback on whether you were doing the right things or not, or if there is that feedback I wish it was more obvious. Pretty and a nice idea though!

Nice idea. No challenge.

It's play style is very similar to any other "Clicker" game. You don't even have to look at the cares as the trade offs for one card over another is practical zero. I was up to 26 days until death at one point, using the "rapidly like a valid button" strategy.

It's a shame too, as the concept is so interesting, as is the art style and the backing audio. One other issue is the placement of the resource counters, with seem to be separate from the game, visual speaking. These counts would have been better off next too the 'people' on either side of the king.

Overall it's a really good attempt, with bunch of brilliant elements, all let down by poor balancing. It you can get those balancing issues for the cards right, then this game will be brilliant.

Proof of it's ease:

This NEEDS to be turn based. It's way too frustrating as a player to have to click that fast while barely reading your cards or knowing what you'll be doing with your clicks, especially when the game looks like it has some awesome strategy options. I love the art and the music fits well. It's also a good sign that I have that strong of an opinion of the turn-based, since you actually had me engaged! Overall, I think this is a great game. Don't think it fit the theme very well, though.

The timer gives a lot of pressure, too much i think. didn't have alot of time too read. Enjoyed the game anyway! Well done!
