Ludum Dare 37 — December 9th-11th, 2016 — Theme: One Room

Well, Mike ran in to problems getting working properly with about 12 hours left in the Compo, so this is the backup plan.

the beuys are back in town

by tylerdoggone - Compo Entry

WASD to move, K to pick up items, J to use item, Q to drop felt, E to drop item.

You play as performance artist Joseph Beuys in this recreation of his famous piece, I Like America and America Likes Me, in which he locked himself in a gallery with a wild Coyote, the animal incarnation of the spirit of America. Become a Shaman. Commune with and hug the Coyote.

Made using Processing, Processing.js, Minim, Minim.js, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Audition. I recorded the samples used for music and sound effects (banjo, cello, can of SanPellegrino).

My first LD!

EDIT: Thank you all for the wonderful support, advice, and reactions! I'm blown away by the generosity of this community. && some hints to get to the hug: Coyote will get more comfortable as you keep your distance. When it's had a long enough nap, indicated by it moving in it's sleep, you can wake it up with the triangle. After it's been able to nap and has moved around the room ~7 times without you scaring it off, it might let you hug it.
There are a few other little ways to get to the hug, but that's the shortcut. I hope that doesn't come across as absurdly convoluted or arbitrarily difficult to guess. When I was coming up with the Coyote's behavior, I really wanted to capture an essence of the original performance, the unpredictable/untamed nature of a wild Coyote. I was interested in creating a puzzle where the underlying mechanics of the Coyote's decision making might be obscured, but from experimentation the player would be deduce the implied emotional effect of their action based on the Coyote's reactions. Thank you all so much for playing!

When a game makes someone look for "I love America and America likes me" to know what it is you know the game's work is already done.

A very interesting and unique experience that knows how to make a performance that some would find pretentious accesible through gameplay.

Nice job, well done for your first LD! The cello music is really good.

I think you should add some button to see the controls or add them here in the instructions, I had to restart the game twice to check all controls lol

Except for the controls being hard to remember and hence confusing to use, a very unique entry in this LD, good work!

A cultural drop, really liked it.
But I couldn't figure out how to hug the Coyote...

Dec 14, 2016 @ 2:11am

Very interesting, but I couldn't quite figure it out. The coyote really didn't want to hug me.

Dec 14, 2016 @ 2:16am

Strange to say the least, but it was an interesting exercise trying to figure the game out.

I just want to connect with someone, even a Coyote!
The music makes me feel comfortable.
Cool concept (art). More animations for Joseph, please.

I didn't manage to hug it though :(

I appreciate the level of art and programming that went into this. I don't think I would call it a game; It's more of an interactive art piece to me. The music is entertaining and at just the right level of interest to keep it from grating after playing for a while. Good job!

Amazing to see good old Beuys starring in a game. That's probably what he'd be up to today, were he still alive. Love the concept, love the game, and love the experience. Very strong first entry!

Agreed, very interesting cultural representation, and the mechanics of the game certainly were entertaining, even if the controls were hard to remember. Fun to tinker with, and generally a great use of the theme, while simultaneously making it your own. Nice work.

Yay, finally hugged him. I was streaming this last night and someone made fun of me saying, "no hugs for you". I am glad I came back and tried again.

I hadn't heard of Joseph Beuys before, but playing this has lead to my further reading about him, if partially in the hopes of finding out how he hugged the coyote! (Which I still haven't managed to do)

This was interesting. I really love the game and ended up doing some reading into Mr Beuys. The building of the mood in this game is so good. Although I'm not sure I fully understand the underlying mechanics, this was a really interesting and thought provoking experience.

For a first LD, you did pretty good! And it's really something to recreate a performance artist's act. I believe you did a pretty good job recreating the experiment. It looks simple, but it's also deep. :)

I liked the overall style of the graphics. The strings in the soundtrack also really set the mood in the game, nice job with it!

The basic controls are also really good, at first I though the character was a tad slow, but in the end, the way he moves fits the concept more this way.

I felt the pace of the game was a tad slow the first time I played, but it kinda helps you feel a bit of what was like to be in that performance, making the coyote get used to you in there and etc. :)

Great job! :D

Really unique game. It's the third game I check in this LD, and I really hope there are more LD games just as unique as this. And now I'm going to read more nore about Joseph Beuys.

Unique concept turned into a great game, everything is great, graphics are very interesting, music is fitting, mechanics are on point and the game itself has a very unique kinda strange vibe that I definitely like. Like many other I couldn't hug the coyote even after some 15-20 minutes, care to drop some tips?

Nice work! Other art is a sadly under-explored place to grab game ideas.
