For some reason, I found this funny. :P
My score was 400.

Nice! I'd like it if the zoom was relaxes a little so I could see the whole pond. Add an option for another player and you've got a fish fighting game.

It was nice! The fish tend to get stuck on the edges.. I think it would be more fun with no edges.. just infinite water and some way to keep the fish from going too far away. Anyway I played until I got 500 and had fun!

Agree on the edges .. maybe a sand texture? I like the art style over all. Cool :)

I like the graphics a lot - the fish look pretty cool. I also really like the music - it sort of reminds me of Spore music, which is one of my favorite games. The main thing is I'm still not exactly sure how to play even after getting a score of 300 (at first I thought the rocks were things I was supposed to eat or something) so that's my main problem with this game. Overall I like it quite a bit.

Controls are a bit weird, but the swimming animation is awesome. It felt like my turning radius was very large and I wasn't as nimble as I wanted. Not sure whether to blame the controls or myself.

I don't think the health is working right, it didn't go down when I got hit, but then I died anyway after a few hits.

I usually score 100 or 0. eh. Most of it was fish coming from nowhere with no time for me to react, or that the collisions get confusing and I accidentally swim into a bad position that takes all my health instantly

Fish are mean! I like the aesthetic.

Funny relaxing game if you are a bear! Good graphics, maybe a bit more work on the controls.

The swimming is great. I like how when the desired angle is more than 90 form your direction, the fish slows and makes a tighter turning radius. I would make enemies 1 hit though, because its super hard to consistently get 2 hits on another fish. Graphics are nice too. I would love to see this first person... would be pretty funny/cool !

the movement and animation very smooth, love it, but the control indeed a bit weird, need a bit of adjusment and adaptation, but after that its smooth sailing :D

The fish name meme game is on point. Smooth game. Nice job.

Aug 29, 2016 @ 5:16pm

Really smooth movement, and good choice in music (unless you made it yourself, and in that case well done!)

There was an issue with trying to hit fish that are stuck at the sides and them turning to hit you several times within a second, and maybe the camera angle could be slightly wider?

Regardless it was a cool experience, thanks for sharing it!

Its a funny and interesting concept,
and the base has been executed well.
interested in what can be done with this.

Really nice game design. It's an art show! I love the colors, shadows, particles but also the music and sound effects! The motion is also really impressing! Chapeau l'artiste !

Aug 29, 2016 @ 5:42pm

Awesome concept. Not really sure where the ancient technology theme fits into this. About the game itself, I like the 3D and the animations you have in the game, but the fish AI are really basic and random. Most times I find fish constantly banging themselves on the walls, making easy targets. Besides that, collision could be done better. I had another fish spaz next to mine, taking my health from 5 to 1 instantly. Otherwise, good job.

Carp fighting simulator =D
Not sure if it fits theme, but was fun to play as a fish in a pond.
You can try adding some fish food in there so it'll be possible to gain health and continue fighting.

There is something in the contrast between the Zen atmosphere (the soft color, the relaxing music, the supposed peaceful carp) and the brutal and bloody attacks. I wonder how did you get this idea?

Aug 29, 2016 @ 11:12pm

@ObscenelyTrue Thanks. I wanted to make something similar to Joust and Shark! Shark! without being either of those. Somehow I got from DNA as my Ancient Technology to Koi breeding / Carp. @leuus thanks for the kind words.. The motion was done with just code. It's included with the Source. @LindenHoltWhittaker The music was just some loops thrown together and layered in garage band. I was thinking of playing my didjereedoo instead but my mic died. @Garfeild There was/is a cannibalism mechanic for getting health back but I had to drop it to make the deadline.

Fun but hard to control. I wanted to be able to control the rotation more precisely since it's all about getting behind the other guys. I loved the sliding transitions

Do carps actually eat each other in real life? Anyway, cool game, did you do the animations yourself? They look nice.

Also, head on collisions should spare the health of both parties involved, that way the game would last longer.

The concept is interesting. I was suprised that the direction controls didn't the carpe (if I continously press "left" and "up" I expect to do a circle, however here i'm going to the top left)
The collision and the scoring are a bit glitchy but you are probably already aware of that.
Put some bonuses, make the map bigger, various enemies... and tell us when we have to come back and play ;)
Good work !

I enjoyed watching fish swimming smoothly.
But I'm not used to such way to move, Up and Down to move forward and Right and Left to turn may be better.
Still, nice game.

Nice concept, the art and music were good too. The controls felt a little off and some the fish would get stuck in the walls, but overall a fun game.

Very clever title and I loved the art for the fish. I personally had no issues with the controls. I really liked the movement, it made it feel like my fish was actually in water. My best score was 800.

Really well made fish. I liked the game. Even though I feel like the controls needed some polish, they still work alright and control much like what I'd imagine a fish bein like to control. The thing I don't like about the controls is that if I just hold left, it takes way too long for the fish to make the final adjustment to swim straight left. And I don't know why exactly, but sometimes it felt like the controls reversed o.O
Anyway, I really think you made the game be overall very good, the music, art and fun is very enjoyable.

Best score: 500

Mini Submission FAQ

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

CAN I ENTER BOTH EVENTS?: You should pick 1 event, whichever you think it’ll do better in. If the idea is strong, and everything plays well enough, you can go Compo. If you’re a perfectionist, and would prefer people to play a more polished game, do the Jam. Many solo participants enter the Jam.

If you made 2 games, unfortunately, the website doesn’t support multiple submissions per user. To submit your 2nd game, you will have to make a 2nd account. Only do this if you made 2 games. Alternatively, if one game is better than the other, then consider just entering the better game.

CAN I KEEP WORKING UNTIL THE DEADLINE?: Yes! Immediately after the 48 or 72 hours, we do something called Submission Hour. As the name suggests, it’s an extra hour for you to package, upload, and submit your games. If there were catastrophic issues trying submitting your game, or you misunderstood how submissions work, that’s okay. It happens. We’re flexible. If you need advice, check with the folks on IRC. If you need an admin, get in touch.

CAN I KEEP WORKING ON MY GAME?: Oh definitely! You should! But for the sake of judging, keep the Compo or Jam version around. You can include a link to the Post-Compo/Post-Jam version of your game on your games page, but sure your main links are the original version.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate at least 20 games to improve your visibility (Coolness).

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crashes, win condition, or tiny bugs after the deadline. In a sense, this is like “porting” to support more players. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just fixing mistakes you should have caught had you been better rested.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs (http://mysite.com/mygame.zip) and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
