MES

by RubiksJr - Jam Entry

You had a nostalgia rush last night, so you decided to satisfy it by playing one of your favorite childhood games for the Mintendo Entertainment System, Attack of the Killer Robots. You popped in the cartridge and prepared for some rose-tinted fun when suddenly...
...nothing happened.
You turned off the MES, took out the cartridge, blew the dust out of it, put it back in, and turned on the MES. You found yourself playing the game, except you were inside of it!

Protect the MES! If it gets destroyed or you get killed, it's GAME OVER, literally.

Use the arrow keys to move, A to reload, D to shoot, and S to melee.

Version 1.1
- Fixed bug where big enemy doesn't move from spawn on right side

Tools used:
-Eclipse
-GIMP
-BFXR

This is a bit strange, but it's quite fun!
The intro text was a bit hard to read (blue on black), though.

Simple, but fun. Its a bit annoying not to have an indication of the reload time, for example a cooldown bar. It gets hard pretty fast.

I really like the graphics, It looks great. When you run out of ammo its not always that clear you can't shoot. Maybe add a alert or something. I got to round 6 if you wanted to know.

Died at the 9th wave.
Fun game but I waited for nothing 2 times because the big block wasn't moving from the spawn point twice.

@Sanart Thanks for the comment, I fixed the bug. The big guy should move towards you normally now. :)

It's quite fun, I enjoyed having to hold off two sides of enemies, although more enemy types would make it a lot better. Good job!

This is a nice, simple game that I enjoyed! Got to wave 11 :D

Aug 30, 2016 @ 7:18pm

Got to wave 11. Seemed like there was lots of wasted space in the top of the screen. Some sort of indicator to know there which side the enemies were on would also have been nice. Also had some issues with shooting after reloading, but that may just be my keyboard.

@unpronounceable Yeah there were a bunch of features I had planned for the top bar, but I had to scrap most of them.

And I'm not sure about your reloading issue, I haven't had that issue my self and I haven't heard of other people having it. Sorry.

really enjoyed art and gameplay, but after getting into round 6 i felt it misses more kind of enemies. also the reload mechanic it would be better with some feedback :)

Concept is working! Would be nice to use the screen space better and have more variety of ennemies (some that are "flying"? so that they use the upper space?) Nice work, and I like the pixel art GAME OVER :P

Cool and simple game, it was quite fun and easy to understand.

Aesthetically game was okay, the pixel art was cool The player attacks and the enemies were cool as well. the only thing i could say is the color choices were a bit jarring to the eye.

The sounds effects were a nice touch.

Gameplay itself as stated before reloading was a bit strange as there was no clear indication if i was reloading or not or if i even needed to hit the reload button. shooting in general was outclassed by the heavily spammable melee attack.

I would have like the waves to come in faster or have more enemies, there was quite a bit of downtime where i wasn't doing anything.

Cool concept and good job!

Died on wave 11. Very simple and very fun to play. Good use of the theme.

@metalhaze

Thanks for the comment! I actually used the original NES color palette for this game, so I can see how the colors were somewhat jarring. I basically just used certain colors because they had more shades, just like the original game devs.

And yes, at this point I definitely wish I had though of adding some sort of cooldown meter for the reload.

Reloading takes some time, or there are limited reloads. I was out of bullets all the time.

Really cool little game, simple mechanics but definately solid. I think some power ups here and there, or maybe varying weapons would fit this game amazingly, if you consider continuing the proyect after LD.
The grafics and the sound design are simple, but they fit perfectly. It would be amazing if you added some 8 bit music loop to pump you up.

Great Job!

Mini Submission FAQ

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

CAN I ENTER BOTH EVENTS?: You should pick 1 event, whichever you think it’ll do better in. If the idea is strong, and everything plays well enough, you can go Compo. If you’re a perfectionist, and would prefer people to play a more polished game, do the Jam. Many solo participants enter the Jam.

If you made 2 games, unfortunately, the website doesn’t support multiple submissions per user. To submit your 2nd game, you will have to make a 2nd account. Only do this if you made 2 games. Alternatively, if one game is better than the other, then consider just entering the better game.

CAN I KEEP WORKING UNTIL THE DEADLINE?: Yes! Immediately after the 48 or 72 hours, we do something called Submission Hour. As the name suggests, it’s an extra hour for you to package, upload, and submit your games. If there were catastrophic issues trying submitting your game, or you misunderstood how submissions work, that’s okay. It happens. We’re flexible. If you need advice, check with the folks on IRC. If you need an admin, get in touch.

CAN I KEEP WORKING ON MY GAME?: Oh definitely! You should! But for the sake of judging, keep the Compo or Jam version around. You can include a link to the Post-Compo/Post-Jam version of your game on your games page, but sure your main links are the original version.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate at least 20 games to improve your visibility (Coolness).

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crashes, win condition, or tiny bugs after the deadline. In a sense, this is like “porting” to support more players. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just fixing mistakes you should have caught had you been better rested.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs (http://mysite.com/mygame.zip) and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
