Kungo

by kingpirux - Jam Entry

It doesnt have sounds so put this in the background: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9s4Vank7jE
KEYS: WASD to move, Q to pick up rocks and move dinos, E to hit, F to throw rocks.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
The game is in a "complete" version, it means that you can win.
Maybe you could be stuck in the first lvl (tutorial) if so, just focus on the instructions to pass it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Kungo is a tower survival game. You are Kungo, the neandertal that wants to protect his eggs and pets.
Aliens want to destroy everything, and you must stop them. To do so, you count with your stregth to break rocks, throw rocks and hit with you mace. Also you count with the help of baby dinosaurs that hatch from your precious eggs! Try to destroy all the aliens and alien launchers before they destroy you!"

Hi, nice game and congratulations ! Simple mechanics that still offered a decent amount of challenge. We're realizing a video with several games of the Ludum Dare #36. We made the same thing at the previous jam.

Can you add your game on indiexpo.net ? (it's free)
So we can include also your game in the video ;)
p.s. write #LDJAM in the game's description.

Nice game entry. How many developers are you? There is one point to mention: I like your "hint-bubbles". I never saw a game like this in this jam.

thankyou! :D i was the developer and a friend helped with the graphics :) yes i wanted to make a tutorial because it have its complexity, so that's the idea i came with ^^ (but i know some times its bugged xD)

I love the graphismes and the fact that you can destroy everything. The game is well explained at the beginning, however, if you do not do exactly what is written, you get stuck. The first time I played, I destroyed everything and I had no way to get to the next level (I think I destroyed a useful rock). The goal is not obvious too. A simple message like "aliens are trying to kill us, kill them and the portal" would help.

Your game has some interesting ideas. I had some fun playing it indeed.
But there is a thing that didn't let me enjoy to much and is that it can only be played with one hand. I think that if the right hand would be able to throw, move and hit it would be a more confortable experience.

Aug 30, 2016 @ 3:24pm

I've played your game as far as I understand it.
The big problem is that the goal is not explicit, I don't understand what to do with the dino eggs, or the rocks. I've break some rocks and a tip say to get the Q key but when i tap on it it just don't do anything :/
Also the grapics are nice but the are not coherent together, almost the long grass that are just weird, they are not of the same graphic style.
The controls are cool, the "puch" button works well.
One last bad point, the enemies were just inactive when i was punching them, they weren't moving or shooting.

Otherwise you game is nice and the theme is respected, great job guy keep continue :)

Cool game, rough to get through. Damage to player doesn't feel consistent. Sometimes standing near an enemy would do no damage, other times it would kill me very quickly.

SamuelSousa says ...
Aug 30, 2016 @ 3:40pm

Cool concept reminds of Chuck Rock for SMD. I like how you destroy everything and the animation of the neandertal.

I think I got stuck I wasn't available to pass the first level. Not sure.

kingpirux says ...
Aug 30, 2016 @ 3:52pm

xD lol in the first lvl jut do what it says (go and press the key it is asking), since i couldn't polish the tutorial further you can get stuck very easy. In the next lvl, you have to destroy every enemy you found, the eggs and dinos just helps you doing so :)

kingpirux says ...
Aug 30, 2016 @ 4:40pm

@MrBrenan yea the graphics are as far as i could, i even had to use the construct2 tutorial spaceship xD. And the enemies were inactive because you are in the tutorial, but seems that it bugs very easy, im going to take it out.
@bushmango when you start the game, you have to do what it says, first kill the spaceship, then break a rock, then press q to grab rocks, then kill the other space ship, then burn them in fire, then grab the rock and close the path to your cave, then grab the egg and finally let it hatch. :D dinos will help you

@skorpyo that's the spirit xD in future versions i want to make grow the dinos so you can destroy everything riding a Trex

kingpirux says ...
Aug 30, 2016 @ 7:22pm

@RIPPorkins survive and destroy the alien invaders :D yes it lacks of enemy variety so its not that obvious at the beggining since you dont see them hurting you

Jonpul says ...
Aug 30, 2016 @ 7:36pm

Seems well executed, but honestly no idea what the heck is going on or how I progress. I smashed everything I could smash.
Not a super fan of the controls to be honest.
Nice graphics and effects though.

Aug 30, 2016 @ 9:16pm

This was pretty fun, it was really satisfying breaking giant rocks and using them as ammo against aliens. The level design was a bit confusing though.

BoltKey says ...
Aug 30, 2016 @ 9:40pm

It was very confusing. I finished the game and I still have no idea what was it about.

kingpirux says ...
Aug 30, 2016 @ 9:46pm

@BoltKey yeah i dont have many enemies so the game is just to survive and learn how to use better your dinnosaurs xD i should put a score for that

joemag says ...
Aug 30, 2016 @ 9:48pm

Yeah not totally sure what's going on, the art is decent and I get the whole rock mechanic but I destroyed the ships and there's nothing left for me to do. Could use some more player direction and some sounds.

AODQ says ...
Aug 30, 2016 @ 10:02pm

what a bizarre game.. there doesn't seem to be really a point of using dinosaurs because i can just destroy all the spawners/ships myself. And they are pretty unreliable anyways. I beat the game though. I think that there's just way too many things going on and a lot of them haven't been balanced properly.

This is really cool! I like its spin on the theme. It's very tough in the beginning though. But the graphics are great, and considering the time period that this was completed in, it is a nice game!

kingpirux says ...
Aug 30, 2016 @ 10:34pm

thanks everyone!! :D
@joemag @AODQ Yeah the balance in the game breaks the game T.T so im going to change reduce drástically the player's life so you count more on dinosaurs, and since the rules of Ludum allows to minnor changes in victory condition im going to update it :)

Aug 30, 2016 @ 10:59pm

Nice concept and graphics, wasn't sure what to do in the beginning but got there in the end!

I loved this game! The art is great and the dinosaurs were very cute. The color choices are good and clear, however the floor background was a little distracting.

It was a bit confusing at first but i followed the instructions and it played out fine after that.

As previously stated there are a few balance issues and the lack of any sound was a bit disappointing.

Overall though very cool concept and good work!

Aug 31, 2016 @ 12:20am

Pretty neat! It seems a little bit glitch-y, though. On my first play the tutorial glitched and wouldn't progress properly, and on the second the keyboard's focus (?) kept leaving the game and scrolling the page up and down (not sure if that's your game or just LD itself being weird). Also, there is a pass between two large rocks near the beginning that is very hard to get through and sometimes traps me entirely. That was my first play, though, so I might not have been supposed to get there.

I really liked the game and the idea, is there any chance moving controls be on the right hand or other? It would be easyer for me to control it with both hands

lol xD yeah im going to think how to change controls so people can use both hands, looks like no one else scratch his... beard while playing games.

Aug 31, 2016 @ 1:08am

Very nice premise! Love the caveman character. The game itself is very confusing though... There are so many things o screen I cant focus on what needs to be done.

This game is great! I love the smashing part - it's a shame that there are not at least sound effects, it would go a long way. Took me a while to figuere out what to do, but still cool gameplay mechanics and the whole idea.

Got a nice feeling this game, just the lack of sound.

It was fun but enemies didn't attack often enough and the timer on the egg is way too high. Looks really good though.

Mini Submission FAQ

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

CAN I ENTER BOTH EVENTS?: You should pick 1 event, whichever you think it’ll do better in. If the idea is strong, and everything plays well enough, you can go Compo. If you’re a perfectionist, and would prefer people to play a more polished game, do the Jam. Many solo participants enter the Jam.

If you made 2 games, unfortunately, the website doesn’t support multiple submissions per user. To submit your 2nd game, you will have to make a 2nd account. Only do this if you made 2 games. Alternatively, if one game is better than the other, then consider just entering the better game.

CAN I KEEP WORKING UNTIL THE DEADLINE?: Yes! Immediately after the 48 or 72 hours, we do something called Submission Hour. As the name suggests, it’s an extra hour for you to package, upload, and submit your games. If there were catastrophic issues trying submitting your game, or you misunderstood how submissions work, that’s okay. It happens. We’re flexible. If you need advice, check with the folks on IRC. If you need an admin, get in touch.

CAN I KEEP WORKING ON MY GAME?: Oh definitely! You should! But for the sake of judging, keep the Compo or Jam version around. You can include a link to the Post-Compo/Post-Jam version of your game on your games page, but sure your main links are the original version.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate at least 20 games to improve your visibility (Coolness).

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crashes, win condition, or tiny bugs after the deadline. In a sense, this is like “porting” to support more players. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just fixing mistakes you should have caught had you been better rested.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs (http://mysite.com/mygame.zip) and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
