Ancient Invaders

Since the invention of the ancient technology of bows and arrows, the Mayan civilisation has slowly but surely been turning their enemies into pincushions. Those pesky jungle birds who steal the Mayans' food just aren't getting the hint! Can one man stop them all?

Use W&D or arrow keys to move left/right, and click and hold to charge the arrows. Release the mouse button to fire!

Love the art and the music. Also, I like that everything is a physics object - it forces me to be way more precise with my shots than I would usually be in a game like this.

I also thought the art and music were great! Also liked the way the arrows stick with the invader and fall with them.

Well made simple game with good dynamics, just as mentioned before it adds to gameplay when all objects have some kind of reaction. Art and sound go very well together on this.

This game should have more comments, one of the most fun. Great use of the theme and ULTRA MEGA SOLID gameplay.

The fact that everything was a physics object (projectiles included) made the game super real. Arts and the mood were completely in sync with the theme. You did a really great job!

This game really looks and feels great. Perfectly fits the theme. I personally never really liked Space Invaders, but this adaption is awesome.

I find it kinda hard that the dead bodies (and also some shots?) get hit by the arrows and thus are blocking them. Anyways, going for another round. :D

Nice reimagination of space invaders! I really liked that you had to beware of projectiles and falling/rolling enemies, since they could get in the way of your arrows.
The boss battle was also a nice addition!

I really like the game, the music and the art.
The boss was challenging but not to hard.
I liked the idea of the arrow begin blocked by the enemy projectiles.

I really liked the art, the music, and gameplay. I liked the physic and the boss fight. The fact that arrows can be blocked by ennemy projectiles is nice too.

I'm not sure about those blocks, though. With dead ennemy's and ennemy's projectiles already blocking arrows, I thought the blocks were a bit redundant. Especially in the boss fight, where you almost can't get a shot at it before clearing most of the blocks.

But very cool entry anyway.

Great game! I like Invaders, the only thing is it was a bit annoying that arrows get stuck in the dead birds as other people point out, but I'm sure you meant for that to be an annoying game mechanic :P The art fit the scene well, the boss was decently scary, the controls were good, enemies varied. All in all, great game you have here! I think a boss song would make it much more intense :p

The Mayan theme made for a great style, really enjoyed that. It was a fun take on a classic, with enough new ideas added to it to make it interesting. Cool last boss too!

A nice concept and I really enjoyed the art style, but the mechanic where dead enemies and enemies' projectiles (especially the boss's) could block your shots was more annoying than interesting.

Lovely art, well made game. I think the character movement could've been a bit faster, and the fact that your arrows could hit bullets and dead enemies was more irritating than entertaining,

I really dig this. I love the sound effects, and the art. It was amusing that dead enemies would intercept your shots, but annoying when they were lying on the ground or taking forever to fall off of one of the barricades. Also, the barricades felt almost entirely detrimental, and I was happy when they were gone. I think that might be because you can aim in directions other than straight up, unlike the original Space Invaders, but the barricades prevent you from actually taking much advantage of that.

Mini Submission FAQ

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

CAN I ENTER BOTH EVENTS?: You should pick 1 event, whichever you think it’ll do better in. If the idea is strong, and everything plays well enough, you can go Compo. If you’re a perfectionist, and would prefer people to play a more polished game, do the Jam. Many solo participants enter the Jam.

If you made 2 games, unfortunately, the website doesn’t support multiple submissions per user. To submit your 2nd game, you will have to make a 2nd account. Only do this if you made 2 games. Alternatively, if one game is better than the other, then consider just entering the better game.

CAN I KEEP WORKING UNTIL THE DEADLINE?: Yes! Immediately after the 48 or 72 hours, we do something called Submission Hour. As the name suggests, it’s an extra hour for you to package, upload, and submit your games. If there were catastrophic issues trying submitting your game, or you misunderstood how submissions work, that’s okay. It happens. We’re flexible. If you need advice, check with the folks on IRC. If you need an admin, get in touch.

CAN I KEEP WORKING ON MY GAME?: Oh definitely! You should! But for the sake of judging, keep the Compo or Jam version around. You can include a link to the Post-Compo/Post-Jam version of your game on your games page, but sure your main links are the original version.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate at least 20 games to improve your visibility (Coolness).

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crashes, win condition, or tiny bugs after the deadline. In a sense, this is like “porting” to support more players. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just fixing mistakes you should have caught had you been better rested.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs ( and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
