Caveman In Time

by Mine10blox - Competition Entry

This is my first Ludum Dare, and I made this game in 48 hours. I've only been doing pixel art for a month and sounds for less than a week. If you are going to say your opinion about my game, please make it constructed so I can learn what to do better next time.

Caveman in Time is an infinite runner, where you play as a caveman running on a timeline. It's a one button game, using the space bar to jump over boulders and spears thrown at you. The twist is the screen starts rapidly moving faster, so if you find it easy, just wait till you reach 2500 points. Press escape to quit at any time.

Congrats on participating.
That said, definitely some design and tech issues here.
I encourage you to keep working and keep jamming.

@MrBrenan can you tell me the error message? I think I know what it is and I can fix it

Sadly, your game crashes on my computer with no error message of any kind. Was hoping to give you some good feedback!

Windows 7
Intel i5-2500K
8 GB RAM

PyGame can be tricky - good luck getting it fixed! Let me know if you figure out the problem and release a new build.

1.From my experience as a game designer, its a good idea to keep things organised,as I have lost many an asset because I forgot the name and I could not find it.I had trouble even finding the executable in the extracted folder.
2.The game crashed upon launch. Too bad,but its not the end of the world. I took the liberty of snipping the error message:

Good luck next time, and Im sure I would have enjoyed your game!

@johnbjuice I uploaded a new build and I think I fixed it, pretty sure it was a resolution error. If you still want to play it, re download it

Hi, nice game and congratulations ! We're realizing a video with several games of the Ludum Dare #36. We made the same thing at the previous jam.

Can you add your game on indiexpo.net ? (it's free)
So we can include also your game in the video ;)
p.s. write #LDJAM in the game's description.

gonutz says ...
Aug 30, 2016 @ 7:16pm

Unfortunately the game crashes on start up because the 'MSVCR100.dll was not found'. You should run something like depends (http://www.dependencywalker.com) on your .exe and make sure to ship all necessary DLLs along with it.

This is a pity, I had a look at your graphics, they look cute, I would have loved to watch that caveman's head explode ;-)

gonutz says ...
Aug 31, 2016 @ 8:25pm

@Mine10blox I still get the same error message:

---------------------------
main.exe - Unable To Locate Component
---------------------------
This application has failed to start because MSVCR100.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

Mine10blox says ...
Aug 31, 2016 @ 9:46pm

@gonutz fixed it for good. If it doesn't work I give up.

gonutz says ...
Aug 31, 2016 @ 10:09pm

@Mine10blox this is kind of funny by now, it still gives me the same error :)
If you want to fix it, all you have to do is go to your C:\Windows\System32 folder, locate the MSVCR100.dll and just pack that along with the rest of the game. This is your Visual Studio's C-runtime, which I do not have installed on my system because I do not have any Visual Studio currently installed and never installed a program that shipped with the DLL.

Mine10blox says ...
Aug 31, 2016 @ 10:29pm

@gonutz got it to work, but I probably didn't actually

Coomzy says ...

@Mine10blox, I was lumped in a impossible situation that killed me, which is never fun in a procedural runner like this, there wasn't really any challenge or interest to play, would have been nice if I could have "played again" with the spacebar, don't want to go back to the mouse ever time.

Mantlair says ...
Sep 1, 2016 @ 7:14pm

I did 2048. Had fun. Holding the jump key mechanic is good. And overall game does its thing as a simple infinite sidescroller. Only thing I can say as a minus is you might get in a condition where you cant save yourself and die. If It was somehow made sure like "you can always have a way to survive" with extreme reflexes Itd be much much better. (which is not an easy thing to do btw, I dont know an exact solution for this.) Overall great job for first time! Nice music also!

gonutz says ...
Sep 1, 2016 @ 8:39pm

@Mine10blox now I have another error, saying:

---------------------------
main.exe - Bad Image
---------------------------
The application or DLL C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\Downloads\Caveman in Time\MSVCR100.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

I guess you have a 64 bit system so your MSVCR100.dll is 64 bit only... this is getting better, though :)

Sep 1, 2016 @ 11:40pm

Score: 3819
At this fast speed background is not so smooth and it tickles your eyes - not good (probably it is due to pygame).

A small warning before the spear appears - nice move.
Runners is a quite specific thing and some people simply don't like it. It requires only skill and there is no decision making process (jump or not jump, huh?).

But overall implementation feels complete.
Keep practicing and making games. Good start.

Sep 1, 2016 @ 11:45pm

And yeah, this was the first game (out of like ~40) that made me laugh out loud because of the spear and head blown sprite. It was just hilarious. And this is a good sign, right?

Mine10blox says ...
Sep 2, 2016 @ 12:33am

@gonutz I think it's just your computer, it works for everyone else. Maybe download Visual Studio C or something, not sure what else to do.

@Volcanic Giraffe thank you! I was waiting for someone to point out the head explosion, and also thanks for the feedback!

Mottafier says ...
Sep 3, 2016 @ 2:28pm

This is good, but I don't see the point of having distance and score :p Maybe have score just track your distance, or age in time? Also, I'm not sure if I'm just bad, but the game seemed to get pretty darn hard around the 100 AD's. An option to slam down faster would make the game more possible , as then you would be able to dodge things more easily, allowing you to get farther. And if people can get farther, maybe have the background or object change to depict something of this age? (I'm sure you've had that idea, and maybe even implemented it, I just couldn't get there) :P

Mine10blox says ...
Sep 3, 2016 @ 2:38pm

@Mottafier yeah, I had a whole idea of getting into different eras with different enemies, weapons, animations, backgrounds, etc. I, like half of the people participating ran out of time. I wanted to tamper with the speed of the level a bit to make it easier. I'm just wanted to get the timeline in because I thought running on a timeline was genius. Thanks for your feedback though!

Simple, well made runner! I included it in my compilation video series of Ludum Dare 36, if you’d like to take a look :) https://youtu.be/CncUh65BgMw

Mini Submission FAQ

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

CAN I ENTER BOTH EVENTS?: You should pick 1 event, whichever you think it’ll do better in. If the idea is strong, and everything plays well enough, you can go Compo. If you’re a perfectionist, and would prefer people to play a more polished game, do the Jam. Many solo participants enter the Jam.

If you made 2 games, unfortunately, the website doesn’t support multiple submissions per user. To submit your 2nd game, you will have to make a 2nd account. Only do this if you made 2 games. Alternatively, if one game is better than the other, then consider just entering the better game.

CAN I KEEP WORKING UNTIL THE DEADLINE?: Yes! Immediately after the 48 or 72 hours, we do something called Submission Hour. As the name suggests, it’s an extra hour for you to package, upload, and submit your games. If there were catastrophic issues trying submitting your game, or you misunderstood how submissions work, that’s okay. It happens. We’re flexible. If you need advice, check with the folks on IRC. If you need an admin, get in touch.

CAN I KEEP WORKING ON MY GAME?: Oh definitely! You should! But for the sake of judging, keep the Compo or Jam version around. You can include a link to the Post-Compo/Post-Jam version of your game on your games page, but sure your main links are the original version.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate at least 20 games to improve your visibility (Coolness).

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crashes, win condition, or tiny bugs after the deadline. In a sense, this is like “porting” to support more players. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just fixing mistakes you should have caught had you been better rested.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs (http://mysite.com/mygame.zip) and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
