Barbecue Simulator

by Henry00 - Jam Entry

A barbecue simulator created for the Ludum Dare 35 Game Jam!
The goal of the game is to grill steaks, but watch out, annoying flies will ruin the steaks if you don't pay attention!

The game supports the following keyboard inputs:
W / Up Walk Forwards
A / Left Walk Left
D / Right Walk Right
S / Down Walk Backwards
R Reset Game
Left Mouse Button Pick Up Steaks

Programming: Henry de Jongh
Models & Music: Joakim Lövgren
Ketchup: Denise Böhm

The goal of the game is to grill steaks between 90-110% and then place them on the plate. Depending on the quality of the grilled steaks your score will increase. Flies will come and ruin your dinner so squash them with your spatula before they ruin your steaks!

The meat changes shape and texture while grilling.

IMPORTANT: WebGL Version runs best in Firefox!

More variety could have made this really interesting. Physics was a little wonky. Overall, fun, relaxing little experience.

Steak got caught on something, stretching it unnaturally and then colliding with some of the scenery and sending it into the abyss. was kinda fun.

Very nice! A little hard to play on a laptop with a trackpad, but I did manage to get some steaks on the grill. I also knocked over the radio and dropped a few steaks on the floor! Well done (pun intended!)

Cool to enjoy a nice bbq after i missed one on the weekend because of LD35. funny physics and pretty good sound - maybe you need more atmo like birds, wind and waves.

winning was "ok"

Very entertaining.
Had 8 steaks on the grill at once. Dropped one on the ground, picked it up to put it back on the grill, sent ALL of the steaks flying into the abyss.
10/10 would throw steaks on the ground again.

Great game! I thought I had it sorted when the steak was cooked to perfection - but then I discovered that there is an endless supply of steak to cook..

I'm not sure how shapeshifting fits in (steaks being caramelized?), but still great nevertheless.

On my first try, I somehow ended up having the steak I was holding start spinning out of control, knocked over the table, and a pile of steaks started rapidly spawning onto the ground, haha!! This is pretty fun, although the controls are a bit hard to handle.

Was fun to grill a steak watching the ocean and listening to this soft and sweet music. Nice relaxation time tho (just missed the beer :p )

That was my reaction when the physics bugged out. Cute idea, really nice graphics and music (and steak sound). I never quite understood how the fly mechanic worked.

Basically, do you remember Jurassic Park: Tresspasser? firstly somebody needs to remake that, and secondly this reminded me of it. First person grab physics are really not something that anybody has figured out, and I think that there is value in doing so.

It was a little sad that nobody was there to enjoy my steaks. That said, this is the best barbecue simulator I've ever played. It's very realistic.

I really like the mood. And trying to grill with the physics in the game easily becomes hilarious. Good job!

Can't see the connection to the theme, but with upcoming summer this is what we need :D Really relaxing.

I like the mood of this game however, I did not like the physics in this game. Also the game was a little dark. Love the sunset and the grilled textures, though.

Nice lighthearted calming game! I liked that all the objects reacted to physics, felt more lifelike. I did however accidentally set a steak perfectly vertical and it spazzed, shot out and knocked over a chair. hah. I laughed. Cool game!

Quite a relaxing flip-em-up! Felt it was quite a tenuous connection to the theme, but really enjoyed the relaxed mood.

Well done!

Pretty fun as it stands! Had a few issues wit physics like a steak that went wild, but overall pretty good use of them. I love the setting and the music fit perfectly! Also, the heat coming off the grill was awesome.

It's hard to control as it's too sensitive - but what an awesome take on shape shifting. great idea

Apr 22, 2016 @ 11:24pm

I liked it! Whipped my meat around until the party was over.

......... phrasing.

I wish there was a negative penalty, like I am Bread. The steaks were perfectly fine after I threw them on the ground!

The steak still clean after drop it on the ground... Well same thing in real life! I wonder where my meat went after cooking it lol. I think it flew through the sea!

This was a fun game, haha. I accidentally knocked over the table, and tons of steak spawned. I got one on the dish at least! Nice job!

It was a really nice experience, very relaxing. The graphics are good and the physics need more development but it is a really nice job.

Seems to fit all the requirements of a "simulator" game(seemingly mundane task, buggy physics that make you laugh etc.) but I like how the steak gradually changes from raw to cooked (which is where the theme points come in) and overall the game was pretty fun and enjoyable to play.

Mini Submission FAQ

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

CAN I ENTER BOTH EVENTS?: You should pick 1 event, whichever you think it’ll do better in. If the idea is strong, and everything plays well enough, you can go Compo. If you’re a perfectionist, and would prefer people to play a more polished game, do the Jam. Historically, more games are entered in the Compo, but with more people and more time, Jam games have the potential to be better (that doesn’t mean they are). Many solo participants do enter the Jam.

If you made 2 games, unfortunately, the website doesn’t support multiple submissions per user. To submit your 2nd game, you will have to make a 2nd account. Only do this if you made 2 games. Alternatively, if one game is better than the other, then consider just entering the better game.

CAN I KEEP WORKING UNTIL THE DEADLINE?: Yes! Immediately after the 48 or 72 hours, we do something called Submission Hour. As the name suggests, it’s an extra hour for you to package, upload, and submit your games. If there were catastrophic issues trying submitting your game, or you misunderstood how submissions work, that’s okay. It happens. We’re flexible. If you need advice, check with the folks on IRC. If you need an admin, get in touch.

CAN I KEEP WORKING ON MY GAME?: Oh definitely! You should! But for the sake of judging, keep the Compo or Jam version around. You can include a link to the Post-Compo/Post-Jam version of your game on your games page, but sure your main links are the original version.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate at least 20 games to improve your visibility (Coolness).

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crashes, win condition, or tiny bugs after the deadline. In a sense, this is like “porting” to support more players. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just fixing mistakes you should have caught had you been better rested.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs ( and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
