Amorphous Arena!

by Trash_Empire - Compo Entry
Hello. My Name is Trash_Empire.
Tell me if I forgot to say something.

To play, download zip. Run AmorphousArena.exe.

While you play my game, note the following things:
-This is my first time completing a Ludum Dare Challenge.
-This is also my first time making a game using SDL.
-This is also my first time making an RTS game.
-There are many mistakes I made.
-I had a learning curve that delayed a lot of my work processes.
-With that being said, this game is very undeveloped. Even for Ludum Dare.
However, it works. You can Win. You can lose. It is hard. It can be fun.

I used the SDL_ttf font library. I also used the open font LibraSans.

My game is called Amorphous Arena.
It is an RTS style game. In it, you control a tower, you use amorphous blobs to spawn units.
You can spawn workers to increase your blob generation. Be careful though, because the enemy AI, while not adaptive, has a distinct advantage over you. You will probably have to play through a few times.

Stats List:
-Worker - 0 Damage, 2 Health
-Basic Unit - 2 Damage, 2 Health
-Flying Unit - 2 Damage, 2 Health, Flying.
-Advanced Unit - 5 Damage, 10 health.

Here are some necessary tips I give in place of a tutorial, which I did not make.
-Both you and the enemies units are always attacking in all directions except diagonal
(Sorry for the lack of animations)
-Flying units can attack ground units. Ground units can NOT attack flying units.
-This game is played with the mouse. I also suggest holding a finger on the space bar button, so you can unselect a tile once you order commands.
-The only command you can give your unit is to move. Be aware, that they are dumb and will get stuck sometimes. Just reorder the movement.
-To drop units, click one of the UI buttons, then click on the areas beside your base.
-To beat this game, you are going to have to learn a strategy. This strategy absolutely involves creating workers. Workers increase blob generation.
-The rest of the controls are intuitive.

Good Luck! You will lose a few times. If you can't win, here is a strategy.

-At 4 Blobs, Drop a flying on the right. Make it take out the two attackers.
-Move the flying to the middle to block the Advanced Unit Lane.
-At 4 Blobs, Drop a flying on the right lane to block it.
-At 4 Blobs, Drop a flying on the left to block the left lane.
-Keep replenishing the left lane Flying unit.
-Create workers, move them out of enemy lane paths. Until you have 6. This is the max.
-With your big blob advantage, eventually push, probably to the right lane an advanced unit rush.

Some indication of taking damage (maybe some simple sound effects) would've helped greatly in understanding what's going on.

Being how you made this from scratch with SDL it's a good first entry imho.

Can't find out how far I am away from losing - so it's not possible to compare actions to find out what works best. Provide more feedback on whats going on and it could be mcuh fun!

Yeah ikr. Health bars, visual attacking and much more feedback was definitely next on the list. Just to have something up in like the minute I had left, I made a loop iterate the tower healths in the cmd window. So you should be able to see tower health as long as you have that window up on the screen

The information provided feels incomplete, which made the game not really make much sense. Could have been better with mechanics better explained. Congrats on getting something finished though. :)

I think the overall game needs more clarity with an improved HUD but i like the idea of the game and cute characters inside

It's fun and I haven't seen too many RTS games in Ludum Dare, which is sad. Good work.

Mini Submission FAQ

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

CAN I ENTER BOTH EVENTS?: You should pick 1 event, whichever you think it’ll do better in. If the idea is strong, and everything plays well enough, you can go Compo. If you’re a perfectionist, and would prefer people to play a more polished game, do the Jam. Historically, more games are entered in the Compo, but with more people and more time, Jam games have the potential to be better (that doesn’t mean they are). Many solo participants do enter the Jam.

If you made 2 games, unfortunately, the website doesn’t support multiple submissions per user. To submit your 2nd game, you will have to make a 2nd account. Only do this if you made 2 games. Alternatively, if one game is better than the other, then consider just entering the better game.

CAN I KEEP WORKING UNTIL THE DEADLINE?: Yes! Immediately after the 48 or 72 hours, we do something called Submission Hour. As the name suggests, it’s an extra hour for you to package, upload, and submit your games. If there were catastrophic issues trying submitting your game, or you misunderstood how submissions work, that’s okay. It happens. We’re flexible. If you need advice, check with the folks on IRC. If you need an admin, get in touch.

CAN I KEEP WORKING ON MY GAME?: Oh definitely! You should! But for the sake of judging, keep the Compo or Jam version around. You can include a link to the Post-Compo/Post-Jam version of your game on your games page, but sure your main links are the original version.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate at least 20 games to improve your visibility (Coolness).

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crashes, win condition, or tiny bugs after the deadline. In a sense, this is like “porting” to support more players. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just fixing mistakes you should have caught had you been better rested.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs ( and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
