Once inside a wall, you'll BECOME A TILE and you must find a place to rest. Wait some seconds and a space bar will flash at the bottom!
- WSAD or arrows to move
- Space bar to rest
- Green orbs fully heal!
///////////CONTEXT///////////
Aftertile for LD#35 #LDJAM
The ghost needs to find a place to rest, by turning into a tile while inside walls and becoming one with the environment.
There's a special place to find rest, though, different from the others. That would be the best place for this ghosty ghost. You just need to get there.
Features: Multiple endings, squashing boop sounds, cute ghost!

Nice and moody. The animations are beautiful! But.. do the orbs do anything?
Good game! I especially love how it looks and the main character animations. The music is also nice.
I wasn't quite sure what to do, but the animations were cute. I'm not sure how a ghost dies, but it looks scary.
Hi everyone! I've updated the game's description with more info on the game and controls. :D
Hi guys! Thanks to everyone for playing and for giving feedback! We've just deployed a new build in which we fixed a bug that prevented the healing orb to come back.
The game looks very interesting but I honestly can't figure out what to do! Space bar to rest? It doesn't seem to do anything for me. And when I move into a wall and become a tile... what does that mean? Nice graphics, music, and the idea of transforming into a tile is interesting, but could be a little less confusing.
Hi there! Thanks for you feedback!
I've add a bit more explanation to the description of the game, as follows:
Once inside a wall, you'll BECOME A TILE and you must find a place to rest. Wait some seconds and a space bar will flash at the bottom!

Very nice experience, floating around in and out of the walls. I found some special green things and collected a few but I think I was doomed to haunt the world and walls for all of time as I seemed not to find the resting-place.
Really nice animations on the ghost and I liked the zoom-in effects of the camera too. Great work.
Very cute! Love the health being displayed as opacity and the ghostly sound effects and smushing against walls <3
Awesome game and amazing art! It feels like cheating when you go into walls, which is pretty cool haha
Great job on the sounds and ghost art! I picked up a bunch of green things, but never ended up finding a resting place. Oh well.
5 stars all around. Beautiful game, great concept, great tie in to the theme, and addictive gameplay. Well done.
The ghost is really cute! I specially liked the "getting into the wall" animation.
Until reading your comment, I thought the only two endings were getting to the special place or dying. Nice little touch.
super cute visuals. I couldn't find the resting place, haha. I thought the player was supposed to hover over the spot that matched the pattern on the tile and then press space?
this was super cute! the graphics and animation were very nice and i also really enjoyed the audio.
very nice graphics and animations! I figured out how to rest and find peace but it actually killed me :D
Hahahahah very well polished!
Even though i might be very dunce because i didn't beat level 1 XD
Yay, I got halo points for her. I want to make an amigurumi of the ghost (is there a name?).
O like so much the animation and art of ghost!. So Cute!!! *___*
Found the resting place. :D
As others have said, the sprites are on-point.
I really liked the graphics and animation for this game, and I liked the ability to go through walls (gotta avoid those spikes!). Overall a nice game!
Awww...even in the afterlife we all gotta take a load off now and then.
Came for the cute ghost...stayed for the quotes. Nice fitting music to.
Nice entry you two.
Pro: Everyone's said it: cute. Great use of color scheme and negative space. I was genuinely surprised when i squeezed thru a wall for the first time.
Con: Easy-- I spent 90% of my time in the walls. This seems to be the obvious choice for safely navigating this space and it got a little boring.
Simple but had amazing graphics and fun music. Had a great feel.
Very cool take on the theme. Art and animation are nicely done.
Now I want to hug a ghost!
That's some pretty neat animation over there. The controls feel good, even though I found some collisions with spikes frustrating.
Good entry overall, congratz!
And hey! If you are interested, our entry is in my teammate's account: you can play WolfBit here:
http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-35/?action=preview&uid=87729
Guess it has some level of pun in the name just like yours haha'
It's darker though.
"Cute Ghost!" - True, it's adorable! I agree with Weeping Rupee, after realizing the tunnels were really tight, I spend most of my time in the walls.
the animation and art are good the ghost is very cute.
it has potential i realy liked the gameplay idea.
but you abused the spikes mechanic, i couldnt finish the game and got frustrated.becuse i thoght it was cool but couldnt finish it.
for a competition i think you shod make a game trhat would be easy to finish even for the most chalenged player.
overall i gave you a good score because i can see you worked hard on it.
ok didnt know i can go trough walls until i read the comments so cool, i might be able to finish it!
I didn't really know what I was supposed to be doing but it played well and looked awesome! It reminded me of a Gameboy Colour game. The music was pretty pleasant as well.
A solid entry. I enjoyed the cute art and that and the nice music set a very good mood. I couldn't quite figure out the point of the game, but that might have been just me being dumb xD Overall, good job on your entry guys!
The ghost is *very* cute!!! The animation for squishing into a wall is beyond adorable. The music also adds to the charm of this game.
Unfortunately I couldn't understand what to do exactly despite the description. I tried finding places where the tile would seem to fit into the level art, but nothing happened. I'm probably missing something.
Great entry!
I found the shapeshifting mechanic by accident and I wasn't sure what to do with it at first. Finished the game on my 4th try. Cute artwork and an interesting mood. The game can be a bit confusing for the first timers.
I love the detail of the death animation! The gameplay is original and interesting and the graphics and the music are charming, I think the only think that could be improved is the level design which is quite linear.
I managed to find two endings- One of them simply by "dying".
I found the game a bit confusing at first, but I think I kinda got the hang of it. The graphics and animations for the ghost was good, and the death animation was.. interesting as well :-)
I managed to skip a part of the level by simply staying all the way at the top end moving right,- This was not possible all the way through though, so maybe it was intended?
Great entry! Very fun with nice controls and good concept. Great job!
Super cute visuals and a fine take on the theme! I really like this one.
Really cool game, cute AF ghost, nice melancholic music.
Had fun playing it! Great job.
Great game! Very nice graphics and perfect ambience!! Some more directions on where to go would be great! :)
Keep up the good work! :D
Very nice art. great sound. interesting concept but didnt fully grasp the idea
Loved it! The music, the art, the fact that you can go through walls :)
Like the way he squashes up into the walls before poking through. Great stuff. :D
Great art style and an interesting mood. Gameplay fits the theme well. I feel a lot for that little ghost.
I couldn't figure out how to find the special place to rest, but that's okay. This game is beautiful, though, and I like how big the ghost is compared to its surroundings. The big, cute ghost coupled with the music made me feel like I was very fragile, which was good!
The style is quite good. But I don't understand where I have to go to get any of those endings.
This was fun. I didn't realize that I could go into the walls for the first couple playthroughs, but after I figured that out I was able to travel around pretty easily.
Hi everyone! Thanks a lot for you feedback and kind words. Currently we're working on improving a few bugs that happen here and there.
I really appreciate all your comments! There's a possibility that we will continue with this project from here, and we will take all your comments into account to make this game more fun :D
Thanks again!
Aww such a cute game, loved tha animations and sounds :)!
I really like the idea of squashing the character to fit in some places heh
Was a bit difficult, but it's the right amount :)!
Very cute graphics and nice concept! I just couldn't find the right place to rest? haha
That concept with those cute graphics can go really far. Thanks for that entry
Ghost guy looks cute and the animations are a nice touch. Loved the death one, thought it worked really well in the context of the game. Did have issues with the resting in the walls as a tile like others but overall thought it was a nice entry with the music and art working great together.
Fresh idea! Liked it very much! And it looks, sounds and plays very good too!
Super pretty graphics! Quite an interesting idea, I really enjoyed playing this.
Nice idea, but it felt like its execution could've been better. I kept trying to get the tile I turned into to match the tiles beneath me but nothing happened. Then, at one place I saw an empty spot where there should've been a tile and I tried placing the ghost there and that worked. But the tile that I had turned into didn't match the one that was missing, so that left me a little confused. Really interesting idea though and the graphics and music are really good. Worth developing further, for sure! :)
Very nice! Played a few times since the description mentioned multiple endings.
I don't know if there was some bug, because I was a bit confused as to when and why the resting icon would appear, because the first time I played I obviously didn't know where the resting places were or what they would look like at all, so I tried randomly pressing it sometimes.
Apparently it worked inside a wall, and the quote that appeared had something to do with death, so I actually wondered if it were some sort of game over.
The second time the icon appeared once inside a wall and I moved a little and it disappeared and I was never able to get it to appear again. Then I finally found, for the first time, what I suppose to have been the only intended resting place: graphics that actually looked like a door and where the icon would consistently appear.
Did I stumble across bugs the first time, or did I misunderstand something?
Anyway: moving on!
The graphics were very nice, as were the animations. Nice touch with the camera zoom near the green orbs, too. Music and sounds were neat too, so how come you've turned off ratings for the audio category?
I guess a ghost might be considered a weird choice, since I would've expected those to be able to move through walls anyway without transforming, and also it's a bit strange to be able to die again by taking damage considering ghosts are generally dead already, but that's a minor nitpick. :p
The level of floatiness to the controls might've been considered bad in a different game, but I think it worked here, especially since the game was pretty simple and it would've been too easy to avoid the spikes and die otherwise. The level of risk it added made it feel really good once I finally reached an orb, because I'd usually taken some damage before getting there.
Simple but compact and polished. Liked it! c:
@bytegrove We wanted to add a mechanic that would give points to the player based on where they chose to rest, but we didn't have time D: Because we wanted to keep the tile assigned random, but still work it out by giving an implicit challenge of finding a more "fitting" place to rest. Thanks for the feedback!
@Avant-Marde The icon disappearing and never appearing again might be a bug. We will investigate! It is supposed to appear a few seconds after you've stopped moving as a tile.
We turned off the audio category because the music is not ours. We bought an 8bit music pack some time ago, and found this music fitting to Aftertile.
The idea that the spikes can hurt the ghost is that all the spikes are former ghosts who died there without having found a proper place to rest: that's why they can hurt the main character.
Thanks a lot for you feedback! We really appreciate!
Hi, nice game ! We're realizing a video with several games of the Ludum Dare #35.
Can you add your game on indiexpo.net ? (it's free)
So we can include also your game in the video ;)
p.s. write #LDJAM in the game's description
At first it is a bit hard to figure out what to do, but it is a cool game.
Graphics and audio are extra cute.
WOW! Talk about a lot of comments! Deservedly so, as this is an adorable character design with a fun idea for... Platforming? Floatforming? Shiftforming? Um... Either way, great job indeed!
Beautiful entry, great sound and graphics.... it lacks a bit on objective gameplay... but it was a very relaxing experience...
Cute looking game with nice art and animations! The wall entering mechanic kinda looks like a bug to me.. May having different kinds of walls would help a bit.
hi! i loved the art in this game, it was adorable.
i didn't quite know how to get more than one of the endings, but this game was pretty enjoyable.
i also uploaded a video of your game on youtube!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiM2d7KlNpQ
this game should have existed when i was a kid with cga monitor ! Really nice pixel art and ambiance !
I like the graphics and I like the ghost that you control! :) May the mechanic is a bit confused... I think a improved would be write some info in the screen sometimes. Good work.
Great animations and sound in this relaxing game. Love the squishy feel of the ghost. Made it to the resting place on my second try.
Really cute ghost, nice graphics at all.
But... once in the random tile form I could travel long distance trough the black sprites. I am not sure if it's intended, but I totally avoided the spikes traveling this way :p
Delightful. I love the idea of the multiple endings, with hitting the spikes enough time even counting technically as an ending. Also beautifully animated.
Great graphics and pretty good music. It wasn't the most fun game I've played, but it was a great overall package.
Very cute style and interesting idea. An all around 5. Awesome job! :)
Cute artstyle, if a little inconsistent. It was not apparent to me at all that you could go into the walls for the longest time, the level design did not reflect that, there should probably be an impassable passage earlier on. Once i accidentally figured that out i found no reason to ever leave the walls for long, so the difficulty disappeared.

Mini Submission FAQ
TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.
CAN I ENTER BOTH EVENTS?: You should pick 1 event, whichever you think it’ll do better in. If the idea is strong, and everything plays well enough, you can go Compo. If you’re a perfectionist, and would prefer people to play a more polished game, do the Jam. Historically, more games are entered in the Compo, but with more people and more time, Jam games have the potential to be better (that doesn’t mean they are). Many solo participants do enter the Jam.
If you made 2 games, unfortunately, the website doesn’t support multiple submissions per user. To submit your 2nd game, you will have to make a 2nd account. Only do this if you made 2 games. Alternatively, if one game is better than the other, then consider just entering the better game.
CAN I KEEP WORKING UNTIL THE DEADLINE?: Yes! Immediately after the 48 or 72 hours, we do something called Submission Hour. As the name suggests, it’s an extra hour for you to package, upload, and submit your games. If there were catastrophic issues trying submitting your game, or you misunderstood how submissions work, that’s okay. It happens. We’re flexible. If you need advice, check with the folks on IRC. If you need an admin, get in touch.
CAN I KEEP WORKING ON MY GAME?: Oh definitely! You should! But for the sake of judging, keep the Compo or Jam version around. You can include a link to the Post-Compo/Post-Jam version of your game on your games page, but sure your main links are the original version.
PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate at least 20 games to improve your visibility (Coolness).
MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crashes, win condition, or tiny bugs after the deadline. In a sense, this is like “porting” to support more players. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just fixing mistakes you should have caught had you been better rested.
MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs (http://mysite.com/mygame.zip) and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.
NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
The ghost is so cute! I love the death animation too! Very cool effect!
