Dr. Lepus - The Last Rabbit On Earth

by gurkenlabs - Jam Entry

INTRODUCTION:
This game was our first LD Entry. We decided to implement it with our self written plain JAVA engine.

THE GAME:
You play as DR. LEPUS, struggling for survival in a world full of brain-hungry zombies.
DR. LEPUS constructed a sophisticated machine -THE LEPOTRANSFORMATOR-
to turn himself into a rabbit and live happily ever after. Unfortunately, the machine broke and wasn't able to turn him into a rabbit permanently. Now he can only shapeshift when consuming carrots.

By eating painkillers and drinking beer, DR. LEPUS is able to endure the strains of zombie apocalypse just a little longer.

Help DR. LEPUS salvage electric devices in order to repair the LEPOTRANSFORMATOR.
And remember....
AIM FOR THEIR HEADS! (That's no joke. you actually do more damage!)

CONTROLS:
MOUSE: aim
W,A,S,D: move
LEFT MOUSE BUTTON: shoot
1, 2, 3: use items
ESC: ingame menu
PRINT: save screenshot

ITEMS:
[1] Carrot -> Collect 5 to shapeshift
[2] Painkiller -> heal
[3] Beer -> Increase damage and range

You need to have JRE 8 installed in order to run the game.

POST JAM FIXES:
- rewrote part of the help text ingame to provide clearer instructions
- fixed an issue with the mouse position on MacOS
- fixed an issue that caused the sound to switch from left ear to right ear and vice versa
- fixed an issue where the cursor wouldn't be drawn when the game screen was paused
- improved the rendering performance

TODO:
fix sound lags

Unfortunately, the mouse is really buggy in the Mac version. Not sure if this is my computer, or the OS X build. I'll be willing to play it if you can fix it (if it isn't my computer that is).

Really fun! I had a little trouble with the controls on Mac but nothing I couldn't deal with. I love shooters like this, so, maximum props!

I get "Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError: de/gurkenlabs/lepus/Program : Unsupported major.minor version 52.0"

The game needs java 8 to run. What JRE do you have installed?

Amazingly clean engine, style reminded me of something like an 8bit Shadowrun.

Nice graphics felt a bit over whelmed right at the very beginning, but it was still fun

Sound bugs after a minute or so. Also, it had almost nothing to do with the jam theme. Shooting was solid, though.

I think you need to insert some kind of invincibility for the player after taking a hit.

@gurkenlabs Okay I got it to start by installing java 8. But now only audio plays and no window shows. Clicking on app running in taskbar does nothing.

@zaywolfe Thank you for keeping on trying. If there is any error there should be a game.log next to the .jar file.
The content of that would be very helpful. What OS exactly do you use?

@Trickman why does shapeshifting into a rabbit have nothing to do with the theme "shapeshifting" ?

Mac version was quite framey. I got stuck in a wall at one point.

Pretty fun! And I really like the one liners that the zombies spout. The sound kept cutting out on me though, like there would just be no zombie sounds or gun shots.

Fun little game. I like the idea of the line shot, and the way it shakes the screen. That made it feel like my weapon was doing something. The music fit in well, I think! The only issue I had was that the voice-over would switch from left to right ear, and it would be nice to see more weapons. But I completed the game and had a lot of fun! Good work!

@OrangePop thank's for the feedback. We just fixed the "sound ear switching issue"

Very hard, but fun. I couldn't tell if the zombies kept spawning, or if there was just that many.
Were you supposed to transform when you ate the carrots, or did you need them for the machine? I haven't beaten it yet.

gurkenlabs says ...
Apr 20, 2016 @ 7:26pm

If you eat (5) carrots, you can shapeshift temporarily. In the plot, DR. LEPUS needs the device parts to allow a permanent transformation with the LEPOTRANSFORMATOR (not part of the jam version though).

I liked the little quips from the doctor. It was sometimes hard to see how many enemies there were because of all the rubble on the floor, but the gameplay was solid and the various items very helpful. I want to beat this at some point!

This would still be a solid game if I were told you spent months making it! It was, I think, a little too easy to become surrounded, but it's a solid game with an interesting take on the theme. Nice!

Mini Submission FAQ

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

CAN I ENTER BOTH EVENTS?: You should pick 1 event, whichever you think it’ll do better in. If the idea is strong, and everything plays well enough, you can go Compo. If you’re a perfectionist, and would prefer people to play a more polished game, do the Jam. Historically, more games are entered in the Compo, but with more people and more time, Jam games have the potential to be better (that doesn’t mean they are). Many solo participants do enter the Jam.

If you made 2 games, unfortunately, the website doesn’t support multiple submissions per user. To submit your 2nd game, you will have to make a 2nd account. Only do this if you made 2 games. Alternatively, if one game is better than the other, then consider just entering the better game.

CAN I KEEP WORKING UNTIL THE DEADLINE?: Yes! Immediately after the 48 or 72 hours, we do something called Submission Hour. As the name suggests, it’s an extra hour for you to package, upload, and submit your games. If there were catastrophic issues trying submitting your game, or you misunderstood how submissions work, that’s okay. It happens. We’re flexible. If you need advice, check with the folks on IRC. If you need an admin, get in touch.

CAN I KEEP WORKING ON MY GAME?: Oh definitely! You should! But for the sake of judging, keep the Compo or Jam version around. You can include a link to the Post-Compo/Post-Jam version of your game on your games page, but sure your main links are the original version.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate at least 20 games to improve your visibility (Coolness).

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crashes, win condition, or tiny bugs after the deadline. In a sense, this is like “porting” to support more players. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just fixing mistakes you should have caught had you been better rested.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs (http://mysite.com/mygame.zip) and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
