by DevDad - Jam Entry

Eat to evolve, evolve to eat! You start as a tiny fish, trying to find food and avoid becoming food. As you eat, you grow and gain abilities. What kind of fish will you become?

Had a blast doing our second Ludum Dare. Unfortunately we had to leave a number of ideas on the cutting floor but we are happy and satisfied with the result.

We hope you'll have as much fun playing as we had making this game. Looking forward to your comments and critique.

WA + Mouse - Movement
AD Side Dodge

500mb!?!?! You should strip some music and high res textures.
I'm sorry but my internet can't handle half a gigabyte...

Pretty game. But size is really large

Amazing graphics, but nearly unplayable. The camera being directly behind the fish makes it hard to grab food, and food seems very scarce. When a big fish starts chasing you, he will just stay on top of you, causing even more camera issues. It's also possible to dash into terrain, which really lags the game out as well.

This was a cool entry. I enjoyed the mood in the water, and the day/night cycle was a nice touch. I got to level up my skills a bunch and it was cool to just swim around and be a fish. When I got eaten by a bigger fish, I didn't die, but also could no longer eat the blocks and eventually lost vitality and the game ended. Not sure if that's a bug or not. I love the voxels, and the minimal audio added to the mood a lot.

The art work is really nice, but the game's very laggy.

I like the idea but the gameplay is not that smooth to enjoy it 100%, but as i said, nice concept and idea, good job. I also like you used Unreal.

I enjoyed swimming around but couldn't figure out what to eat. At some point I gained some XP but I don't know why :(

The game is relaxing to play-- if the baddy fish were a little more dangerous i'd liek it a little more

but its cool-- good balance of danger and discovery, a system of progression.

Note: I did get stuck in the lvl up screen after I got ate from behind by one of those big red guys.

You should be careful with the size of your games. Ppl here don't have patience (or internet) to download big things like that

Hey everyone thanks for trying our entry! It was difficult weekend for us, we decide to participate even though most of us had other job tasks to do. We had to cut the many corners so entry is not polished as we wanted to be.But anyway we are enjoying to be part of this great jam , to meet a many talented people and to enjoy to play many great games. Just to mention current size is 193MB it's not 500MB anymore.

The main thing I like about the game is the artwork. I could not really play it due to its laggy movement.

Enjoyed the side dodging mechanic, which when quickly used allows us to swim forwards a lot quicker, although makes the speed shapeshift obsolete.

Really nice. there were some bugs though, like sometimes the fish wouldn't eat anything until I restarted the game.
The side dodging ability was kinda overpowered, since I could just press A and D rapidly to run away incredibly fast and the piranhas could never catch me.
Other than that the game looks really nice, audio is nice and the controls were nice too.

Pretty good, but at one point I think I died or something, and could no longer eat anything. Night was a little bit too dark to see.

Apr 26, 2016 @ 2:19am

Had some slight issues with the camera, but otherwise this was really fun. ESC to quit made me really sad. With the style of the game, I didn't mind the slightly larger download size. Nailed the mood for me.

Nice idea. The scenery looks great! I really like all the corrals and kelp, and the other fish look good too.

Mostly technical issues stopped it from being fun. Being able to hide in the little cracks and crevices as a small fish would have been neat were it not for the fact both I and the bigger predators can swim straight through apparently solid objects. Also after picking up the first couple of food blocks, I found I couldn't eat them anymore? Wasn't sure if this was because I had levelled up and now needed to be eating small fish or what (also couldn't find any small fish after the first couple right at the start of the game beginning). I'd also say leave the predators' appearance until a bit later on (liek maybe when it gets dark, but that being after 3 or 4 minutes rather than just 1 minute).

Evolution >< Shapeshifting? I guess the theme really is open enough for that too! Visually fun to explore.

Mini Submission FAQ

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

CAN I ENTER BOTH EVENTS?: You should pick 1 event, whichever you think it’ll do better in. If the idea is strong, and everything plays well enough, you can go Compo. If you’re a perfectionist, and would prefer people to play a more polished game, do the Jam. Historically, more games are entered in the Compo, but with more people and more time, Jam games have the potential to be better (that doesn’t mean they are). Many solo participants do enter the Jam.

If you made 2 games, unfortunately, the website doesn’t support multiple submissions per user. To submit your 2nd game, you will have to make a 2nd account. Only do this if you made 2 games. Alternatively, if one game is better than the other, then consider just entering the better game.

CAN I KEEP WORKING UNTIL THE DEADLINE?: Yes! Immediately after the 48 or 72 hours, we do something called Submission Hour. As the name suggests, it’s an extra hour for you to package, upload, and submit your games. If there were catastrophic issues trying submitting your game, or you misunderstood how submissions work, that’s okay. It happens. We’re flexible. If you need advice, check with the folks on IRC. If you need an admin, get in touch.

CAN I KEEP WORKING ON MY GAME?: Oh definitely! You should! But for the sake of judging, keep the Compo or Jam version around. You can include a link to the Post-Compo/Post-Jam version of your game on your games page, but sure your main links are the original version.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate at least 20 games to improve your visibility (Coolness).

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crashes, win condition, or tiny bugs after the deadline. In a sense, this is like “porting” to support more players. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just fixing mistakes you should have caught had you been better rested.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs ( and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
