MONSTER'S BUFFET

by glitchu - Jam Entry

*UPDATE* With the shift and space key if it doesnt work:
-Once you build up your meter you can press shift to hide.
-When you're near an object you can press spacebar to eat.

If you dont fill up the bar or you're not near anything to eat, nothing will happen.

But do let me know if you've tried the above then I will try and fix the problem and sorry for the confusion!

This is my first entry. I've had fun while I was making it but mainly entered to push my limits and trying out new things. Unfortunately I couldn't finish alot of the artwork as I was coding the AI for the people, which I suck at but learnt alot from it. Also that meant there's a lack of music and sounds, but I tried to get them in at the last minute.

You are a transformable monster and you are hungry for humans. Watch out for the agents as they will try to hunt you down. Use your abilities to sneak, escape and confuse your prey.

Fill up your gauge by successfully eaten things. Gauge can give you more hiding and stay in a body for longer periods of time. The eye tells whether you are visible or hidden.

You can also hide in inanimate objects and you will inherit the speed and body of the thing you've eaten.

You are invincible in hide form and you will move alot quicker so if use it if you need to escape. However, this will drain your gauge quicker so be careful. When you exit hide form you will transform back into a monster.

The game does progressively get harder as more agents will turn up.

Have fun :)

Controls:

W - UP
S - DOWN
D - RIGHT
A - LEFT
SHIFT- HIDE (only when you have meter filled, if it's empty then nothing will happen)

SPACEBAR - EAT (only works when near object/person(cant just eat the air), press again to exit body if no other thing is next to you)

We had a similar concept we played around with when we discussed the theme on friday! Glad to see someone else tried it. Fun time waster until your inevitable death.

I really liked it, you say you got little time but the result is superb! You implemented the mechanics of stealth really nice. And it was really smart to include and escape mechanic like that, good thinking. I also really liked the animations of the monster and the eating.

Took me a few tries, to get the hang of it- Quite a fun little game. There's something satisfying about "eating" people like that. Good job.

I am sorry but pressing SHIFT isn't doing anything for me. The other players don't seem to have this problem.
I made a game on GMS too, and some people complained that pressing R wasn't restarting the game for them, but it worked fine for most. I don't know why this is happening.

Funny game, at first took me a while to get, had to get back on the page and check the controls. Maybe a quick complete tutorial would work better that the hints. And it suits very good with the theme. With a better graphic and maybe some controls for mobile, would be a cool game. With keyboard is a bit difficult tu chase people around :). Good luck! I activated sticky keys. I really liked the cardboard boxes. It's very stealthy!

Thanks for the feedback guys :D I know a controls page is needed but I thought I'd just include it in the description as I was literally still working on it. Hence why there's alot of stuff missing like music on it. I will play all of your games and will try and give you guys feedback also <3

This game looks INCREDIBLY PROMISING! But at least on Windows 8, the Shift and Spacebar keys do nothing. Hope you can fix it!

Thanks for the warning about the shift and space key, I never knew that was a problem on windows 8. Will see what I can do in the mean time

What a fun game! I like the idea. I'm playing it on Windows 7 and Shift seems to do nothing.

So for those that can run the game but shift and space do nothing, I've updated the description so you can try that instead. It was my fault for not being clear on that in the first place. Otherwise hit me up and I'll try and correct the errors

I especially enjoy eating the agents who try to kill you. Nice entry!

Very fun game, I love the concept of stealth and its incorporation with morphing. If the people had walking animations this would feel like a complete and solid game. Better instructions at the beginning would be very helpful.

Took me a while but I eventually got it. Highscore 18. It was pretty satisfying to crunch on people.
Oh And i m just reading now that you can hide... I should try again.

I also made a game where you have to hide to eat people :D

Mini Submission FAQ

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

CAN I ENTER BOTH EVENTS?: You should pick 1 event, whichever you think it’ll do better in. If the idea is strong, and everything plays well enough, you can go Compo. If you’re a perfectionist, and would prefer people to play a more polished game, do the Jam. Historically, more games are entered in the Compo, but with more people and more time, Jam games have the potential to be better (that doesn’t mean they are). Many solo participants do enter the Jam.

If you made 2 games, unfortunately, the website doesn’t support multiple submissions per user. To submit your 2nd game, you will have to make a 2nd account. Only do this if you made 2 games. Alternatively, if one game is better than the other, then consider just entering the better game.

CAN I KEEP WORKING UNTIL THE DEADLINE?: Yes! Immediately after the 48 or 72 hours, we do something called Submission Hour. As the name suggests, it’s an extra hour for you to package, upload, and submit your games. If there were catastrophic issues trying submitting your game, or you misunderstood how submissions work, that’s okay. It happens. We’re flexible. If you need advice, check with the folks on IRC. If you need an admin, get in touch.

CAN I KEEP WORKING ON MY GAME?: Oh definitely! You should! But for the sake of judging, keep the Compo or Jam version around. You can include a link to the Post-Compo/Post-Jam version of your game on your games page, but sure your main links are the original version.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate at least 20 games to improve your visibility (Coolness).

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crashes, win condition, or tiny bugs after the deadline. In a sense, this is like “porting” to support more players. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just fixing mistakes you should have caught had you been better rested.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs (http://mysite.com/mygame.zip) and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
