Shift Commander

by cynicalmonkey - Compo Entry

My Compo entry is a Shift Commander, you are a lone pilot protecting a space station but you have to build the ship yourself from scrap and salvage from ships before trying to survive as long as you can.

Ended up with a lot less time due to some family commitments so rougher round the edges than I would of liked but I am happy with the end results.

If you do play it and leave a comment I promise to also play your game :)

Haven't been able to try the game, because even though there are links for the major platforms, the run file for Linux is still a .exe file

My cannon is shooting the wrong way :c

My first impression was that I was amazed at your splash screen. Looks really professional!

The music brought it down, it's too repetitive. Would've worked fine without the soundtrack.

The game is really hard, almost too hard.

Otherwise, nice work. Hope you had fun making it =)

The cannons are supposed to shoot backwards it's not a bug it's a feature!

Music is not my strong suit but better to include it than not, plus the soundtrack is adaptive which was something I had never done before so wanted to include it

I like the idea, but it feels slightly buggy.

Sweet game! I'm still not entirely sure what some of the ship parts do, but it's really quite fun! Building your ship is very cool, and although shooting 'backwards' is a bit unintuitive at first, the core gameplay is very fun.

Nice and funny game, I like the soundtrack it adds a bit of flair to it, I don't know if I hit a bug or something, but on my 2nd try my weapon started to fire instead of the 2 shots per second, like 10 shots per second. Really nice to play as an arcade game, just to chill out. A little info about each ship part would have made the game (LudumDare)perfect

Not a bug a feature

Each ship part you attach changes the stats if your ship as well as getting an added boost to one of the areas.

So one part might slow you down but speed up the cannons, another increase shields but decrease the size of your fuel tank

I may of made these changes too subtle but jams and properly balanced games don't go hand in hand.

I think I may be saying "it's not a bug it's a feature a lot" ironic that it wasn't the theme

After placing the parts and clicking launch i see my ship but it doesn't move.. well from what i have seen, i think the game is like FTL.

the game starts paused on your first playthrough so you can read the controls, you have to press P to unpause it

This was a really fun game, the splash screen was awesome. This game although is really difficult.

I enjoyed building my ship! Nice touch. I included it in my video compilation series of Ludum Dare games, if you’d like to check them out :)

Cool little game! Sorry to hear about time problems. Music sounds a bit repetitive and the font from the main menu was a bit unreadable but, good game overall!

Very cool game.

I made a ship on the front, but none of the buttons would click to play.

i thought this was a really great idea but the ship controls were just terrible and made it unplayable - fix that and you will have a good one here - nice job

Can you elaborate on that? Haven't had anyone else mention any problems with the controls and it literally follows your mouse around.

Well done for getting it in. I didn't really know what I was doing for the most part though.

Mini Submission FAQ

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

CAN I ENTER BOTH EVENTS?: You should pick 1 event, whichever you think it’ll do better in. If the idea is strong, and everything plays well enough, you can go Compo. If you’re a perfectionist, and would prefer people to play a more polished game, do the Jam. Historically, more games are entered in the Compo, but with more people and more time, Jam games have the potential to be better (that doesn’t mean they are). Many solo participants do enter the Jam.

If you made 2 games, unfortunately, the website doesn’t support multiple submissions per user. To submit your 2nd game, you will have to make a 2nd account. Only do this if you made 2 games. Alternatively, if one game is better than the other, then consider just entering the better game.

CAN I KEEP WORKING UNTIL THE DEADLINE?: Yes! Immediately after the 48 or 72 hours, we do something called Submission Hour. As the name suggests, it’s an extra hour for you to package, upload, and submit your games. If there were catastrophic issues trying submitting your game, or you misunderstood how submissions work, that’s okay. It happens. We’re flexible. If you need advice, check with the folks on IRC. If you need an admin, get in touch.

CAN I KEEP WORKING ON MY GAME?: Oh definitely! You should! But for the sake of judging, keep the Compo or Jam version around. You can include a link to the Post-Compo/Post-Jam version of your game on your games page, but sure your main links are the original version.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate at least 20 games to improve your visibility (Coolness).

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crashes, win condition, or tiny bugs after the deadline. In a sense, this is like “porting” to support more players. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just fixing mistakes you should have caught had you been better rested.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs ( and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
