Shifty Witch

by jordgubben - Compo Entry

It has been told through the ages that some witches and wizzards, though they walk among the common mortal, where blessed by the elder gods the power to take other forms than that of man and woman.

When the mere mortals learned of this, they became engulfed in so such envious anger and that their hearts and bodies turned to stone.

Really cool! I love the handdrawn "child-like" art :P The shapeshift mechanic was really thin, and there were some issues with scrollbars messing up gameplay. (Firefox) Not much replayability, but really cool entry!

The game did not work on Google Chrome (No response to input)

Thanks.

Both the scrollbar issue and the chrome keyboard input should be fixed now.

The game was pretty fun, a little more could have been done to maybe add some life to it in terms of particle effects, but I do like that you can spam the space bar, so killing monsters wasn't a chore, very nice!

I love the graphics and style. It would have been cool to have music. The shifting mechanic didn't really make a difference to me. Are the cloud's shots weaker than the witch's

Cool game, this is the first shmup I've seen on this Jam, and you did well.

Nice hand-drawn art style. Not sure what we are shape-shifting into and why. Are we also stone as well? A back story and some music would definitely help a lot! :)

Really enjoyed the art style. Controls also felt nice and responsive. Good work :) (on a side note, I originally thought the title was shitty witch..., made much more sense when I saw the controls :P)

The hand-drawn art has its charms. I'm not sure why I'd want to shapeshift into the cloud as the witch form seems so much more powerful. The movement of the main character is a little slow. Could be a good starting point if improved upon.

Hello! Amazing art-style! I think there is only two missing things for me: no music and no option to flip witch from right to left side, so then you could shoot from right to left and destroy enemies behind you. But except that your game is really cool, you did good job! ;]

Simple but fun game :) I especially liked the background, it's very pretty! Some music and sound would've made it even better. Good job anyway ;)

The hand drawn style and colours works really well, especially liked the tree and hills.

Nice shapeshifting mechanic! I like how the player has to keep switching between the two forms in order to increase the success chances.
As a side note, I think that you could balance the game so that it is not only better to switch, but necessary in order to succeed. I think that it is possible to beat the game with only the witch form (although it is more difficult).

Got through the whole game without even discovering that there was a shape shifting ability. Saw people comment on it, then button mashed until I found it. (Shift key for anyone reading this wondering the same.)

I was gonna say that movement was quite slow (but not so much that I couldn't win), but I guess the shape shifting kind of nullifies that comment. Though in retrospect I wish the shape shifting had better enabled me to deal with the last dudes coming from behind the player.

As others said, the art style was quite pleasant.

Tried it on Edge25 HTML13 (Current Version) and the only problem was that the arrow keys did not respond. I could shift and fire but not move.

I like your graphics and the whole style of your game a lot!

Just like @Andy Gainey I've won the game without the knowledge of the shape shifting ability. So it's a bit too easy I think.

Thanks for a few amusing minutes :)

Needed some music but loved the aesthetic.

I like the "running" concept... it is a funnygame, but I don't understand very well the "shapeshift" concept here.

Nice hand-drawn art style! I thought if there is more tradeoff between shapes (such as adding another enemy that moves faster or enemies ignore the bird), shapeshift becomes more effective. Anyway I like the graphics and the game :)

I really liked the graphics, they really have that child-like charm. It was interesting how the shapeshifting ability lets you move faster than your incredibly slow witch form, but I agree with some others that making the shapeshifting necessary against a specific type of enemy would better balance the two forms.

I noticed the frame rate was below 20fps for me (I'm using Firefox), and got taken by surprise how I suddenly died out of nowhere with only 10 enemies remaining (maybe an enemy spawned exactly where I was?). Still, great job with the game, since compo submissions are definitely not easy (I always participate in jam because I can't art). Hope to see a full-fledged shmup from you someday!

Mini Submission FAQ

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

CAN I ENTER BOTH EVENTS?: You should pick 1 event, whichever you think it’ll do better in. If the idea is strong, and everything plays well enough, you can go Compo. If you’re a perfectionist, and would prefer people to play a more polished game, do the Jam. Historically, more games are entered in the Compo, but with more people and more time, Jam games have the potential to be better (that doesn’t mean they are). Many solo participants do enter the Jam.

If you made 2 games, unfortunately, the website doesn’t support multiple submissions per user. To submit your 2nd game, you will have to make a 2nd account. Only do this if you made 2 games. Alternatively, if one game is better than the other, then consider just entering the better game.

CAN I KEEP WORKING UNTIL THE DEADLINE?: Yes! Immediately after the 48 or 72 hours, we do something called Submission Hour. As the name suggests, it’s an extra hour for you to package, upload, and submit your games. If there were catastrophic issues trying submitting your game, or you misunderstood how submissions work, that’s okay. It happens. We’re flexible. If you need advice, check with the folks on IRC. If you need an admin, get in touch.

CAN I KEEP WORKING ON MY GAME?: Oh definitely! You should! But for the sake of judging, keep the Compo or Jam version around. You can include a link to the Post-Compo/Post-Jam version of your game on your games page, but sure your main links are the original version.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate at least 20 games to improve your visibility (Coolness).

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crashes, win condition, or tiny bugs after the deadline. In a sense, this is like “porting” to support more players. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just fixing mistakes you should have caught had you been better rested.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs (http://mysite.com/mygame.zip) and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
