I like the monochrome and the lighting. The game has a very striking style. And it's very atmospheric, so full points for mood, too.
I decided to try crossing an anomaly.
I quite liked this. I hope more people see it :)
Very nice work :)
Looks fantastic, sounds pretty atmospheric too! Is there an end goal? I thought you're supposed to get energy for your ship, but I couldn't find a way to transfer it.
Visually the most impressing game so far. It's amazing what you achieved with so little color and shapes. I will definitely come back to this entry for inspiration.
The game itself was a bit hard to understand at times, but I really liked the ingame contextual text to explain some things. Well done, very impressive!
Looks amazing, fantastic work! I enjoyed exploring the world but felt a lack of clear purpose. It bought back the magic of exploring worlds in computer games as a child. Thanks.
Very cool graphics; the console-style text logs add a lot to the atmosphere along with the harsh lighting and sepia tones. I got somewhat lost after seeing the anomalous black holes but had good fun.
The gfx is amazing. I don't really now what to do in the game but the mecanics are working great!
I want to make shaders like that.
Game is beautiful, I died in the anomaly but I'll certainly play it again.
Very moody, even despite the bfxr sound effects. The lighting and flashing meteors (?) really convey a sense of being marooned on a lonely, remote, alien planet. The subtle background hum also helps.
Mac build works fine! This is great, love the look. Same as other people I wasn't sure what to do, tried recharging the pod but couldn't, died on the anomoly.
Visuals are so unique. I would love to spend more time in this gorgeous world.
Excellent use of the 1-bit artstyle! My favorite thing about this game is how the enemies break apart when they die. So satisfying!
I just wish the shapeshift ability had more balanced trade-offs. Right now there's no reason not to become a cube when you see an enemy. I think the game would be improved with more enemy variety so that there is some strategy to shapeshifting.
Ye i realy like the dithering and shading. sounds were good too, realy set the mood. Dint like that there were a few invisible walls about the palce but over all greate.
The impressive and unique graphics combine with the harsh sound effects to create a really oppressive and desolate atmosphere. Very well done, I love it.
I loved this! Not only did it have a great visual style, the gameplay was rather novel and engaging too.
I love the graphics so much! and the sounds create a great atmosphere. It lacks of a clear purpose but exploring the place was fun.
Wow, the art is so striking. I loved the entire atmosphere of the game, and it was fun shooting enemies. Great work.
OSX user here. App doesn't run as it is, indeed, but it perfectly does if you “chmod +x” the executable (the_black_crystal.app/Contents/MacOS/the_black_crystal).
Totally love the concept, really pleasant and fun.
Observations: player seems to move faster on diagonal, is this intended?
Instructions are not so clear, it took me three deaths to actually discover how to shoot and harvest.
This game is gorgi! Great atmosphere and simply satisfying! Thanks for making it!
Visually striking and distinct, the audio is also great. On the other hand the gameplay is very basic and thematically you didn't get much out of shapeshifting.
I would have preferred shapes with varied abilities allowing the player to traverse and interact with the environment in different ways. Maybe the entities in the world could even change their behavior based on certain shapes.
Another point is lack of direction. I only figured after looking at the source that you are supposed to enter the field of anomalies and not avoid it as advised. Oh well.

Mini Submission FAQ
TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.
CAN I ENTER BOTH EVENTS?: You should pick 1 event, whichever you think it’ll do better in. If the idea is strong, and everything plays well enough, you can go Compo. If you’re a perfectionist, and would prefer people to play a more polished game, do the Jam. Historically, more games are entered in the Compo, but with more people and more time, Jam games have the potential to be better (that doesn’t mean they are). Many solo participants do enter the Jam.
If you made 2 games, unfortunately, the website doesn’t support multiple submissions per user. To submit your 2nd game, you will have to make a 2nd account. Only do this if you made 2 games. Alternatively, if one game is better than the other, then consider just entering the better game.
CAN I KEEP WORKING UNTIL THE DEADLINE?: Yes! Immediately after the 48 or 72 hours, we do something called Submission Hour. As the name suggests, it’s an extra hour for you to package, upload, and submit your games. If there were catastrophic issues trying submitting your game, or you misunderstood how submissions work, that’s okay. It happens. We’re flexible. If you need advice, check with the folks on IRC. If you need an admin, get in touch.
CAN I KEEP WORKING ON MY GAME?: Oh definitely! You should! But for the sake of judging, keep the Compo or Jam version around. You can include a link to the Post-Compo/Post-Jam version of your game on your games page, but sure your main links are the original version.
PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate at least 20 games to improve your visibility (Coolness).
MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crashes, win condition, or tiny bugs after the deadline. In a sense, this is like “porting” to support more players. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just fixing mistakes you should have caught had you been better rested.
MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs (http://mysite.com/mygame.zip) and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.
NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
LOVE the shading in this game. really reminds me of obra dyn.
how did you accomplish that?
