Ludum Dare 34 — December 11th-14th, 2015 — Theme Tied: Two Button Controls, Growing

NOTE: Because of the Theme tie, we allowed everyone to pick either Theme. Using both was optional. To keep things simple, there will still only be one Theme category. Every category in Ludum Dare voting is an opinion, so you’re welcome to rate them as you see fit. But we encourage you to be fair in your scores to people that chose only one Theme, and not both.

ALSO: Itch.io has an experimental game downloader over here. You may find it useful.

Wildly Growing

by Diventurer - Jam Entry

Don't you wish you were a fish? No?

In this game, you start out as a tiny fish. Smaller than the youngest sardine in the entire ocean! You have to grow, grow, GROW! Feed yourself on the sea weed until you're bigger than those pesky sardines. Now that you're big enough, you can just eat them whole! Maybe soon... You'll be the biggest of them all?

This game is fairly short - so please unlock everything.
Can you get to 0 remaining fish though? ;)

Nice Idea/Concept. A little on the hard side. I couldn't really see why i died.

Dec 15, 2015 @ 12:14pm

couldn't get past lvl 4 even though I had all upgrades, the red thingy was full und I had like 20.000 points. so I guess this is a bug? anyway otherwise REALLY great game and I LOVE the graphics. and the music! well...everything fits her ;)

@limered
Big fish might hurt you. :) Or oil

@Obvious Industries
Level 4 + Upgrades is winning! :D
The last upgrade costing 9999 food is the last unlockable. You have to search for a turbine in the sea to make it possible to buy. I just spoiled that now, but just so you know.

Killing every fish is the last goal for ultimate experience. :D

Thanks for playing!

This is similar to what my partner and I were discussing about making. Glad to see you did it justice.

Pretty chill game. I really liked the art and sound. It did freeze a few times though.

@flukeshot
Yeah, I have to figure the freezing out. Maybe it's because it's winter?

Thanks for playing everyone. I updated the game just now to fix incorrect build version and a bug.

Nice game, atmosphere is on level)

A better version of my game XD Good job

Dec 15, 2015 @ 8:47pm

I didn't rate because my computer wouldn't let me play the game due to countless security pop-ups. Looks great, though!

@AnaglyphCoding
If you click on "More info" or something on the bottom of the warning, you can bypass it.

Really nice, excessive number of fish though. It was really hard to know which direction I moved in the first stage, and to know what I could eat. Also felt weird being something that looked like an armoured shark and still getting food from algae.
Would also like more feedback that showed if it's me eating the other fish of if I should flee as I'm being used as a chewing toy.
I'm not sure if the last stage(4+upgrades, not gonna spoil it) was fun or not, the rest of the game felt very cohesive.

Made a screenshot when the game freezed http://imgur.com/OA9qZ9F
Please fix it eventually, the game is enjoyable!
BTW, I played the similar one when I was a child, but it was split into several screens are was controlled by mouse :-)

I REALLY like the atmosphere ! controls are nice because it's really like if you were a fish. Graphics are really nice, i love it ! Although The audio is good i don't really think it fit well with your atmosphere. The game is quite easy but i really spend a good time playing it ! Is there a next level after 4 ? (i really try to up but i guess i didn't reach the conditions to up).
GREAT JOBS !

@Zetym
Yeah. If you feel it's too many fish it's possible to edit in fish.txt. The last thing is just something we had to do as a result of a joke. :)

@scorched
Yeah, I am trying to fix that. It's probably an infinite loop somewhere.

@exhidor
Level 4 + All upgrades is the game yeah. Or you can kill all ~730K fish. :D

Thanks a lot everyone for playing

The controls felt nice and crisp, got to airplane mode and then didn't really see much to do after that. I thought the music was good, but the "bloop" sound when you ate things wasn't really satisfying. I enjoyed the game though.

Yeah, I totally put a virus in the game. I hope it didn't stop you. Leaving a comment like that is very silly of you.

Nice style and gameplay - managed to spin around in the green area up to over 9999 and achieve max unlock, all fish seemed to disappear when I did that till I swam somewhere else. Nice entry nonetheless :)

Dec 17, 2015 @ 9:24pm

@Hot Box Games
Yeah, that's a little side effect of only being able to manage a small chunk of the 725,000+ fishes. :D

Thanks for playing everyone

Great graphics and mood in general.
I Liked the last upgrade (it's quite fun) !
Would be cool to have more evolutions because it seems quite impossible to achieve the ultimate goal.

Nice game :)

Very nice game! The art is really great looking, although maybe it doesn't cleanly convey the most important game info about what is dangerous when I was a new player. But it looks fantastic. The sound is also a nice fit.

But best of all the entire gameplay is an interesting idea and a fun implementation... great job!

The concept has already been seen but is effective. I wish I could have seen the final form but I've been eaten too many times :) Maybe one day... great game!

Got all upgrades with no crash so far! Is it intentional that you can just circle in algas (at least on level 4) and earn food by that?

Dec 26, 2015 @ 11:07am

[Lazarus-omin from Creative Sectors]:
Wow, I really dig what you did here.

Loved the overall frame: the graphic elements were coherent, pleasant, the music & sound effects were perfect add-ons to the mood, and as a fan of E.V.O. - Search for Eden, I pretty much liked the mechanics too.

Start was a lil' cumbersome, but got the hang of it soon. Only one small detail looked a little extreme for me, and that was the momentum of dying, with all that explosive blood. :)

Nevertheless, really enjoyed this one! Nice work, keep it up!

P.s.: The Airplane mode cracked me up! :D

Lovely graphics! I included it in my Ludum Dare 34 compilation video series, if you’d like to check it out :) https://youtu.be/BZOhspy6Kt8

Mini Submission FAQ

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

CAN I ENTER BOTH EVENTS?: You should pick 1 event, whichever you think it’ll do better in. If the idea is strong, and everything plays well enough, you can go Compo. If you’re a perfectionist, and would prefer people to play a more polished game, do the Jam. Historically, more games are entered in the Compo, but with more people and more time, Jam games have the potential to be better (that doesn’t mean they are). Many solo participants do enter the Jam.

If you made 2 games, unfortunately, the website doesn’t support multiple submissions per user. To submit your 2nd game, you will have to make a 2nd account. Only do this if you made 2 games. Alternatively, if one game is better than the other, then consider just entering the better game.

CAN I KEEP WORKING UNTIL THE DEADLINE?: Yes! Immediately after the 48 or 72 hours, we do something called Submission Hour. As the name suggests, it’s an extra hour for you to package, upload, and submit your games. If there were catastrophic issues trying submitting your game, or you misunderstood how submissions work, that’s okay. It happens. We’re flexible. If you need advice, check with the folks on IRC. If you need an admin, get in touch.

CAN I KEEP WORKING ON MY GAME?: Oh definitely! You should! But for the sake of judging, keep the Compo or Jam version around. You can include a link to the Post-Compo/Post-Jam version of your game on your games page, but sure your main links are the original version.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate at least 20 games to improve your visibility (Coolness).

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crashes, win condition, or tiny bugs after the deadline. In a sense, this is like “porting” to support more players. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just fixing mistakes you should have caught had you been better rested.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs (http://mysite.com/mygame.zip) and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
