Ludum Dare 34 — December 11th-14th, 2015 — Theme Tied: Two Button Controls, Growing

NOTE: Because of the Theme tie, we allowed everyone to pick either Theme. Using both was optional. To keep things simple, there will still only be one Theme category. Every category in Ludum Dare voting is an opinion, so you’re welcome to rate them as you see fit. But we encourage you to be fair in your scores to people that chose only one Theme, and not both.

ALSO: has an experimental game downloader over here. You may find it useful.

Theme: Growing

BEATZ is a rhythm musical top-down game where you need to GROW your cell by shooting sound waves on the music-beat to destroy enemy cells.
Survive until the music ends, good luck and enjoy the beat
Play it on your browser!

- SHOOT when your cell becomes green during the beat.
- GROW your size and soundwave with each hit.
- INCREASE your growth rate, sound strength and credits with consecutive hits.
- UNLOCK new tracks.
- SURVIVE until the music ends, dodging the blue cells with W,A,S,D and aiming the sound wave with your mouse. They will hunt you according the rhythm.

Nice concept and fun to play. Music got a bit much at times though but I can see the potential. Nice job

This is a blast. Great choices on the music. They have a great pumping feel that makes it easy to follow the beat. The timing felt a littttle loose at times but generally it works. I think you've got a winner on your hands. You should get with an artist who can make you some real assets specific for your game and get this on a flash portal or somewhere. This actually seems like a great game to also get with a musician who can score your game with some music since this is a music game at heart. Maybe try to hook up with someone on Soundcloud who would do it for exposure.

It's fun and the gameplay is well done. But I think the rule is that you need to make all assets yourself, including music and sounds.

Dec 14, 2015 @ 10:18am

Its hard to forecast when you will have to press for the beat, but the art of the characters is nice and music and colors also great

The Pause is very disruptive of game play, I thought the game has crashed when it first happened. The cell gets too small some times. The menu is also small even in full screen.
I like the game, but there are too many things that disrupt, make it feel not so good.
p.s. I have no idea how you grow, is it random or what?

Thanks for all the comments! As a beginner designer, it's really motivational and gives me the direction to improving.

@Khallane, Thanks for the comment! Actually I tried to focus on the Growing theme.
@simoroshka Thanks! This rule is only for the Compo, I've submitted to the Jam.
@cimbaman Thanks for the great hints! I'm trying to improve it. With the short time I had, I was focusing only on the problem @doitle mentioned: the beat timing. I'll update you when I fix it after LD.
@doitle Your comment really motivated me to go ahead with this project and game design at all, thanks very much, I'll keep you guys updated!

Music is the best I've heard so far. Found the game a bit hard to grasp what to do. Seems like I just get attacked my blue cells.

I wish you had of trimmed the songs down a little, while I would have liked to try all the levels I only did a few because I felt the music got repetitive.

Great game and great concept, but I believe everything has to be made by you.

Great use of theme!

Background got a little disturbing and the beat pattern was a bit hard to follow.

Dec 15, 2015 @ 1:06am

It could definitely use some sort of visual aid to go along with the beat instead of the long text based tutorial because I was a bit confused as to what part of the beat I was supposed to click too.

When I was playing, I accidentally hit the pause button which was disorienting. I couldn't figure out when larger waves would shoot out either.

Other than that, the game was fun.

I might of been head bobbing to the beat while playing this :D. Neat game, enjoyed playing it.

Maybe I'm weird but the text for the menu was near unreadable (only through squinting and guess work was I able to get to work).

I really enjoyed this one, although I tend to like rhythm games in general. Nice effects, cool tracks. Reminded me of Beat Hazard, which is a great thing. :)

Nice beat game. Music was cool and the graphics were nice. The game was quite hard at first though.

Dec 18, 2015 @ 3:31pm

Cool game! Did you program a beat detection algorithm during a weekend? Good choice of music too. It was a little difficult to time the shooting by only the change of color. Maybe some kind of indicator before you actually have to press would make it a little more intuitive, like a circle around the cell that gets smaller, and signals to player to shoot when it's as small as the player cell. Just a thought :) Really good job!

Nice fun shooter! I didn't really understand why the blue things changed size and only seemed to explode sometimes, but other than that it was solid.

Fun game-- good music choice for beat.
I didn't see any penalty for spamming my wave blast though. Not all games need a penalty for hitting on the off beat but I think this one could have.

Dec 20, 2015 @ 3:38am

It's simple but is very fun! Good job!

As people already said, maybe in the future would be cool if the game have a penality for miss the beats, maybe in the score, or some "accuracy" percentage bonus.

Loved the game! The only problem I with it was that it froze randomly (or at least seemed random). It wasn't at a specific time in game but it did seem to freeze when I clicked.

Mini Submission FAQ

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

CAN I ENTER BOTH EVENTS?: You should pick 1 event, whichever you think it’ll do better in. If the idea is strong, and everything plays well enough, you can go Compo. If you’re a perfectionist, and would prefer people to play a more polished game, do the Jam. Historically, more games are entered in the Compo, but with more people and more time, Jam games have the potential to be better (that doesn’t mean they are). Many solo participants do enter the Jam.

If you made 2 games, unfortunately, the website doesn’t support multiple submissions per user. To submit your 2nd game, you will have to make a 2nd account. Only do this if you made 2 games. Alternatively, if one game is better than the other, then consider just entering the better game.

CAN I KEEP WORKING UNTIL THE DEADLINE?: Yes! Immediately after the 48 or 72 hours, we do something called Submission Hour. As the name suggests, it’s an extra hour for you to package, upload, and submit your games. If there were catastrophic issues trying submitting your game, or you misunderstood how submissions work, that’s okay. It happens. We’re flexible. If you need advice, check with the folks on IRC. If you need an admin, get in touch.

CAN I KEEP WORKING ON MY GAME?: Oh definitely! You should! But for the sake of judging, keep the Compo or Jam version around. You can include a link to the Post-Compo/Post-Jam version of your game on your games page, but sure your main links are the original version.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate at least 20 games to improve your visibility (Coolness).

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crashes, win condition, or tiny bugs after the deadline. In a sense, this is like “porting” to support more players. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just fixing mistakes you should have caught had you been better rested.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs ( and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
