NOTE: Because of the Theme tie, we allowed everyone to pick either Theme. Using both was optional. To keep things simple, there will still only be one Theme category. Every category in Ludum Dare voting is an opinion, so you’re welcome to rate them as you see fit. But we encourage you to be fair in your scores to people that chose only one Theme, and not both.
ALSO: Itch.io has an experimental game downloader over here. You may find it useful.

**NOTICE**
While the game is playable in the WebGL version, I really urge and recommend you to download one of the executable builds. WebGL has strange visual and sound artifacts and poor garbage collecting affecting performance significantly.
If you do choose to use the WebGL version, then when the game has started wait 10 seconds or so before playing for minimal amount of bugs.
If you can, and you'd prefer the best experience possible, I recommend downloading an executable build and running it fullscreen in your native resolution.
Thank you!
This game is about a sad potato trying to reunite with his potato family.
In this puzzle platformer you plant seeds to grow plants to your advantage, plant a vine to climb higher/lower, plant a dense block of grass to block a path or fill a gap, or plant a bombplant to blow up vulnerable blocks!
Also, did I mention the game is chock full of easter eggs? Hidden in almost every likely/unlikely corner is some kind of hidden easter egg. See if you can find them!
There are 8 or so easter eggs in the first two levels..
Controls:
W - Look Up/Move Up
A,D - Move Left/Right
Q,E - Cycle selected seed!
R - Restart Level
Left Mouse Button (LMB) - Fire seed!
I really enjoyed making this game, so I hope you all enjoy playing it just as much. I'm sorry if the game is a bit short, just remember there are easter eggs.. (I love easter eggs)
Anyway, I'll probably keep developing this game if people are interested in seeing a full game, so leave a comment and tell me what you think!
Thank you for playing! I hope you all had a lovely Ludum Dare!
If you have any issues, encounter bugs that prevent you from playing or would just like to say hello, you can send me a message, I'll reply guaranteed!
Also I'm going to be updating this game for a post-ludum dare version of the game, and I'll link it here in the future!
Planned features so far:
-Pixel perfection, no more bleeding.
-Better integrated interactive tutorial
-Better pixel art
-More levels, more easter eggs and more seed types!
Bugfixes: Update
Bugfix #1: 14/12/2015
I realized the Look Up feature was not working, so this is working now. You can hold in the W key to look up. There was a bug with the animation of the text display when you get a new seed, this is now fixed. And also, I fixed some very small bugs that you guys mentioned, like the missing kill collider under level 1 and some places the difference in resolution would cause you to not be able to see important parts of the map.
Thank you all for all the positive feedback! These are all the fixes I'll be implementing in the Ludum Dare version, and the rest will come in a post ludum dare version, which will be linked on this page.
Bugfix #2: 15/12/2015
I just realized that the embedded web player hid huge portions of the gamescreen, making playing the game really, really difficult. It's a real bummer for me that I didn't notice that untill now, so everyone who has been playing the game in the embedded web player have played a broken version of the game.
Anyway, I have removed the embedded web player, you can now play it in Web from the links down below, this fixes that issue. Sorry everyone!
Bugfix #3: 15/12/2015
- Fixed broken collision detection
- Fixed broken event collider
Bugfix #4: 16/12/2015
- More work on collision detection
- Fixed some important details out of sight depending on your resolution.

Hello! Thank you for playing my game! The big hole above you has dirt in the roof, so you can shoot a seed up there. Sorry if that wasn't clear enough!
Here's an example for you, SvenFrankson.

I clicked 100% because of the name.
The music is really pumping. I enjoyed that! Plus the easter eggs.
I enjoyed the game (as well as the easter eggs, although I mostly saw them in passing, falling towards my doom).
Great use of the theme, making the growing of seeds, the main method of navigating the levels!
It had a fair bit of "trial and error" though, which made it easy to become stuck in a dead end by running out of seeds by having to guess where to shoot seeds into an unseen area (and guessing wrong), running out of seeds right before the goal, etc. This was a bit annoying at time, especially in f.x. level 2, which started out with a series of precision jumps, which then had to be repeated. As an alternative, I harvesting the grown plants to reclaim the seeds could also have been useful.
The graphics were clear and efficient, and I liked the music.
All in all, it was an enjoyable game!
Haha, I thought it was Freestyler playing, but nope. Nice soundtrack and cool gameply ideas. The vine growing and seed shooting works great!
You know what makes this game? The Audio :) So few people think about it as an important part of a Jam but I am glad you did. It adds the final bit of polish to this solid little design. Great work.
Solid gameplay, not really my type of game as I'm not found of platformers but a good platformer nonetheless. Good use of the theme too!
I'm not found of the graphics but they have their retro charm. On the other hand, the seed mechanic is really interesting. I can't rate your game but I would give it a solid 3 overall.
Kudos on completing an interesting game within the compo time!
Thanks for all your comments so far!
Reply to Somnium:
Yes I am aware that at one point it becomes a fair bit of trial and error and I'm really sorry about that! It was so obvious for me while making the game, but then later when seeing people play I realized that this wasn't obvious at all!
Traps you fall into when you make a game :P Thanks for playing!
Nice creative game - the poor guys face when you die though..! Really enjoyed the different seed mechanic, added a whole other level of complexity! :)
Really liked this one. Its a standard platformer, with the twist that you have to make your path through many of the areas.
Nice pixel art style graphics and background music. Enjoyed it! :D
I liked the concept, but the execution didn't really blow me away.
A music/sound mute/toggle would've been nice. The floating icons during the levels were confusing (especially the very first one). The drop inside the first level leading you out of bounds was jarring (and not required since there is a reset key?). I would've really preferred some regrowing seeds instead of forcing the player to suicide or reset upon running out. Sometimes vines didn't grow on dirt patches making me waste my seeds.
The second level ramped up in difficulty quite suddenly and it was weird that you could climb below a vine that had not fully grown yet. The grass seeds got me stuck/overgrown inside a pit the moment I got them.
As already noted having spaces to shoot at out of view is problematic as well (I crossed the large gap without every planting a vine in between, and the following chimney also has the ceiling dirt out of view).
The seed switching buttons being all big and distracting for two whole levels of not having more than one seed type (if any seeds left at all) wasn't helping.
The game would benefit a whole lot if there was more polish on fewer features.
Hey YinYin! Thank you for playing my game. I'll be developing the game post ludum as well to address some of the issues that you're having.
I didn't have much time to do exactly what I wanted, and the out of bounds you got was me simply forgetting to add a collider to kill you if that happens.
The sudden difficulty increase is unfortunate, but it's really hard for me to assess difficulty when I've been practicing this game since the creation of it.
Sorry about the fact that there's a bug that stops vine seeds from growing on dirt, and the fact that you have to shoot at spaces out of view is going to be one of the first things I fix in my post ludum version.
Thank you for playing my game!
Nice potato game ! I hope this potato family's name is McCain ! :)
I liked the game overall although it was a bit buggy for me although nothing being made in 48hrs doesn't excuse. ended up falling through some walls and floating in the air for parts of it (used webplayer)
Hey cynicalmonkey! Could you tell me where exactly you managed to fall through a wall? And how you managed to float in the air?
I'm guessing the floating in the air was you being at the edge of a vine, allowing you to "float" on the edge of the vine. The collision detection on the vines are a bit wonkey.
Also thanks for all the feedback everyone, I really appreciate it! I introduced a small bugfix to address some of the bugs you've all mentioned. Including falling forever in level 1 should not be possible anymore.
Also some other small changes.
Also I realized my look up feature was not working, but now it does! Hold W when standing still and not climbing to look up!
Thanks!
Really great game! Took a couple of tries on some levels, but it flows nicely and works!
Nice puzzler, good work for 48 hours... Had fun running around with a potato version of Dr Jones...
this is a good entry. interesting mechanic with seeds. a lot of variations: different types of seeds, interesting levels. but in some places player can't see where he has to shoot and he can only guess it.
the amount of easter eggs is surprising :D
Hey everyone! Thanks for all the feedback! I just realized that the embedded webplayer hid big parts of the game view and that you've all played a broken build if you played it in the embedded web player.
I've disabled the embedded web player, now you can play the web version by clicking the web player link instead.
I still recommend that you download the windows version and run fullscreen on your native resolution, but it's up to you!
Sorry about that, everyone!
Nice little game, I saw it on your stream.
I like the concept of growing your way to where you need to go, very nicely done.
I managed to get myself stuck in the growing grassblocks though, haha
This is an excellent entry! It was super fun, I do wish there were more levels! My only complaint is that some shots have to be made "in faith" because it's really hard to see where you're shooting.
I enjoyed playing this game but sometimes the movement felt glitched. A few times I even passed through walls. Usually when I was climbing a vine and at the top of the vine.
The only level that gave me trouble was the 3rd, I didn't know the grass block could fill in a space bigger than two blocks. took a few tries.
Very good game but music stops after so time and no exit button.
I would like to see post-compo.
This one is really cool! Replacing jumping with growing vines on specific walls is really a cool mechanic. I didn't complete it but I'll come back to it, probably :)
Interesting game, found some easter eggs.
I like the graphic design, but the hitbox sometimes felt a bit weird. You fitted the growing theme really good in your game.
Hey guys, I'm glad to hear that people like my game :) I've addressed some issues with collision detection so you should not be able to glitch through walls anymore. I will be working on a post ludum version with more levels!
Sorry about that bushmango. I wasn't able to sleep so I've been staying up and I've fixed pretty much all collision and hitbox issues with the game, I'll roll out the builds for the update tomorrow. Thanks for playing :)
Good game with interesting mechanics, could definitely benefit from checkpoints though.
Ok, I enjoyed that. Overall, the puzzles were simple and rewarding, and even the chase sequences with those boulders weren't as annoying as I feared they would be. Only the last levle took a couple of tries to hit the thing just out of the screen :)
Hey everyone, thanks for all the feedback. I've pushed my last bugfix for the ludum dare version.
Thanks for playing!
Lots of fun! Liked the different block types. Liked hunting for the easter eggs :)
Nice compo! I wish I could have a bigger camera view to have some ideas of how much grow I may need later, but still mechanism are interesting! Good job ;)
Interesting mechanic. I lost all my resources trying to find your easter eggs, but it was a fun little game.
Nice. The seed shooting feels pretty solid.
Regarding the yellow platform, consider having it instead wait for a certain amount of time and then move at a reasonable speed, which should accomplish your intended goal without being tedious (and not reveal itself if viewed from the side). ;)
Hey that's a great suggestion kirbytails. Thanks! I'm working on the post ludum-dare version as I write this :)
Haven't done any additional levels, but I'm reworking a lot of the core mechanics for a more smooth experience.
Thanks for playing my game :)
Cool mechanic, with a little more balance this can be big!
Cool entry with cool ideas. I mentioned a couple of issues to you on stream, but I had a lot of fun with this one!
As I told you on stream, it would be nice if vine length has consistency. The graphics have Commodore64 vibe to me but anyway color palette could be improved. Probably you know that sound is not the best. I like the idea of various seeds. An idea could be getting rid of tile constraint and letting player choose the spot that seed will take effect on. This is only if you want to work further on it though. I'll be remembering these games so, I expect better next time! :)
Awesome game Ildfulglen! Thanks for stopping by the stream and letting me play this awesome game! I highly recommend anyone interested in trying this out to play the non web versions. They are the best versions!
Funny well made game. I included it in my Ludum Dare 34 compilation video series, if you’d like to check it out :) https://youtu.be/sMG1ENTyKkU
Very fun little game. Enjoyed every level. Only problem I had was that the boulder was introduced rather unexpectedly. Otherwise a very good game!
Nice game, neat hints except it was not clear at first that I have to aim ground, and that I can aim at all :) Also music is quiet compared to sounds, and potatoguy smashes when on top of boulder and in the middle of air when he falls
Don't know how to overcome the pit in the level boulder is chasing you at the start
POTATIANA??....mmm... AWESOME!! XD
Good music. I like the sunglasses. :P
Super fun idea! There is definitely tons you can do with this idea! Great Job!
The idea was cool and I enjoyed playing - although I did have one ragequit moment when I pressed R instead of E. I think some of the vine growing bits were clever and could definitely be expanded on, although I think the controls were a little slidy for any precision vine jumping and could be tightened up a bit. Would really benefit from controller option as well I think. Keep up the easter eggs!

Mini Submission FAQ
TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.
CAN I ENTER BOTH EVENTS?: You should pick 1 event, whichever you think it’ll do better in. If the idea is strong, and everything plays well enough, you can go Compo. If you’re a perfectionist, and would prefer people to play a more polished game, do the Jam. Historically, more games are entered in the Compo, but with more people and more time, Jam games have the potential to be better (that doesn’t mean they are). Many solo participants do enter the Jam.
If you made 2 games, unfortunately, the website doesn’t support multiple submissions per user. To submit your 2nd game, you will have to make a 2nd account. Only do this if you made 2 games. Alternatively, if one game is better than the other, then consider just entering the better game.
CAN I KEEP WORKING UNTIL THE DEADLINE?: Yes! Immediately after the 48 or 72 hours, we do something called Submission Hour. As the name suggests, it’s an extra hour for you to package, upload, and submit your games. If there were catastrophic issues trying submitting your game, or you misunderstood how submissions work, that’s okay. It happens. We’re flexible. If you need advice, check with the folks on IRC. If you need an admin, get in touch.
CAN I KEEP WORKING ON MY GAME?: Oh definitely! You should! But for the sake of judging, keep the Compo or Jam version around. You can include a link to the Post-Compo/Post-Jam version of your game on your games page, but sure your main links are the original version.
PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate at least 20 games to improve your visibility (Coolness).
MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crashes, win condition, or tiny bugs after the deadline. In a sense, this is like “porting” to support more players. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just fixing mistakes you should have caught had you been better rested.
MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs (http://mysite.com/mygame.zip) and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.
NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
Hi, nice entry !
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/SvenFrankson/SvenFrankson.github.io/master/howTo.png
How would you pass this part ? Oddly, seeds won't grow as much as the other, leaving quite a wide gap (and mashed potatoes at the bottom)
