Lights Out

by stevenjmiller - Compo Entry

Lights Out is a stealth action game where you harvest souls to open the gate back to your realm.
Tools used:
GameMaker Studio
Audacity
Cosmic DJ

NOTE: When you go to download the game, you will notice that two versions are available. Basically, I have received 4 or 5 comments from people who were very confused about what to do and where to go. So I made the text easier to read and added an arrow pointing to the exit after all of the souls are harvested. I believe this is allowed, but just in case you like to be confused or you think it is unfair that such changes were made, the original file is still available.

Great stealth game!

Well executed concept. The changing of abilities is cool! Unfortunately, I can not get past the first level. I kill all the NPCs, but it does not take me to the next level

Surprisingly long and fleshed out (that's what she said) given the time constraints. I didn't even get to beat it! The stealth mechanics are solid and the visuals are great. Good job!

In order to progress, you actually have to go up to the manhole circle thing and interact with it by teleporting through the wall. Sorry I didn't make that more clear, I've always been bad with tutorials. Thanks for giving it a try, though!

I liked the idea but can you make it past the tutorial level? I killed all humans and pushed all the switches but nothing...

Nice work, I love stealth games. The controls are bit gimmicky and not as precise. Art is ok-ish, though the perspective is odd and you could have used a better font. On the bright side, it is a good answer to the theme, the mood is all there and it's somehow fun to play even though would do with a score count or something (or have I missed it?)

I fixed the tutorial, as bugs that hinder progress are allowed to be fixed. The tutorial is hopefully much more clear now. Sorry for any confusion it caused, but hopefully this will address any concerns and allow people to access the full game.

Nice mechanics! Hard to see the cursor though,

Nice. I made a stealth too. But my stealth is full of bugs.
And I couldn't pass the second level.

This is awesome! Great execution and rather varied for a game made in 48 hours. Well done :D

I actually liked the gameplay idea. It would be nice if you could have been implemented them better n the levels (e.g. I often just reach the light switch after I already killed all enemies and the special powers could have been used better, you just have to teleport in the later levels (btw the later level are quite tough :D))
Also the graphics are quite too dark, I couldn't see walls and it was very hard to see my cursor (At first I thought teleporting doesn't work because I didn't see my cursor)
Overall good idea and nice game, it just needs some more polishing :)

Really great game. The only problem I have with it is that the text is hard to see, since its black and the background is quite dark.

It's very complex congratulations. Great game!

interesting stealth game. The addition of special powers helps make this entry feel more unique compared to many other games.

Also, pretty cool that you used Cosmic DJ to make the music. I've never really considered it before as a proper music-production tool before.

Aug 24, 2015 @ 4:45pm

Good game, just a little easy.

This was fun and really well done for such a short period of time! The music was really great! One thing that might be interesting would be if the people were at least a little freaked out by all of the dead bodies laying around, or if they turned toward the light switches when you turned lights off that they were nearby.

Very fun, challenging stealth game! I loved the different enemies and abilities, and when I got a hang of it, speeding through the levels like a demonic ninja was incredibly enjoyable!

Lots of levels and really nicely polished. The only 'issue' is that it's a little bit on the easy side but considering the time constraints it's still a great game.

Surprisingly, a quite good stealth game! The idea and three different enemy types are great. I only wish that monster's attack range would be a little bit bigger - I often stumbled into enemies whilst trying to kill them...

P.S. Four teenagers watching TV and not noticing their buddies getting killed cracked me up :D

The controls are not very precise therefore it is a little hard to control the little monster. I would love see more depth in the graphics or in the letter font to create a stronger mood, but i know that can be very hard to manage (sorry if im being picky X) )

Mini Submission FAQ

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

CAN I ENTER BOTH EVENTS?: You should pick 1 event, whichever you think it’ll do better in. If the idea is strong, and everything plays well enough, you can go Compo. If you’re a perfectionist, and would prefer people to play a more polished game, do the Jam. Historically, more games are entered in the Compo, but with more people and more time, Jam games have the potential to be better (that doesn’t mean they are). Many solo participants do enter the Jam.

If you made 2 games, unfortunately, the website doesn’t support multiple submissions per user. To submit your 2nd game, you will have to make a 2nd account. Only do this if you made 2 games. Alternatively, if one game is better than the other, then consider just entering the better game.

CAN I KEEP WORKING UNTIL THE DEADLINE?: Yes! Immediately after the 48 or 72 hours, we do something called Submission Hour. As the name suggests, it’s an extra hour for you to package, upload, and submit your games. If there were catastrophic issues trying submitting your game, or you misunderstood how submissions work, that’s okay. It happens. We’re flexible. If you need advice, check with the folks on IRC. If you need an admin, get in touch.

CAN I KEEP WORKING ON MY GAME?: Oh definitely! You should! But for the sake of judging, keep the Compo or Jam version around. You can include a link to the Post-Compo/Post-Jam version of your game on your games page, but sure your main links are the original version.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate at least 20 games to improve your visibility (Coolness).

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crashes, win condition, or tiny bugs after the deadline. In a sense, this is like “porting” to support more players. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just fixing mistakes you should have caught had you been better rested.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs (http://mysite.com/mygame.zip) and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
