Drack's Mansion

by pirate_shell - Compo Entry

Drack was a recent self made millionaire who bought a mansion by the sea. Only one problem. He was a monster! This meant people bothering him. So hea dealt with it the only way he could - by killing them :)

EDIT 1: Simply separated the source link from the link to the actual game. I hadn't noticed they needed to be separate since it was so late so I had bundled them together. Also added a few more screenshots to represent the game better. Hopefully that's not braking the rules ^^'

Change log:
-the newspaper that appears after every night was possible to spam click past without getting to see. This was due to lack of sleep. This exteremely minor bug has been fixed. No additional assets, features or content has been added to the game.

Really nice artstyle! Love the colors and the detail on the characters. The game gets better once you figure out how to teleport and use special abilities, though I wish there was a tutorial on how to use them.

Good game, a progressive tutorial would habe been useful to learn how to control the character capabilities.

Thank you so much for the feedback people. A tutorial would have been great, I agree, however, I simply did not have the time for it since I pretty much wasted my first day on a failed idea. Best I could do is list the controls under the info section on the main menu ^^'

First of all, I love the pixel art here, the details and colours are gorgeous! You've added a lot of abilities for Drack, which make for a fun game too, but it's a bit of a shame that the enemy types just negate those abilities, instead of adding more types of play. With some more developed levels and enemies, this could be a real cool game.

Just one other suggestion, you might want to try and stop multiple hit sounds ect. playing over the top of each other, as you get further in it can be a bit cacophonous!

The art was AMAZING! The gameplay reminded me of CoD Zombies :D really good

It's not a bad game, but it's not very innovative.

Powers are usefull and controls are fluid.

This is amazing! The gameplay is quite fun and the art style is extremely good. However, I do have some constructive criticism. Some sort of quick tutorial message or level would help players learn the attacks, but I understand you were short on time. Also the direction the player is facing was not always consistent on the direction it is moving. Overall, a great game!

Aug 24, 2015 @ 1:27pm

@Sir Spiderlot Thank you! Next entry I make will definitely spend more time teaching the player things. As far as the direction, the player faces the mouse, not where he's moving to. It's a simple mistake to make, though ^^' Thanks for the feedback~

Love the graphics, the dynamic camera and the smooth gameplay generally. I had to play a couple times before realizing that there were a couple skills to use, but always returned to the one that's the default. Also a little bit more feedback on the abilities (screen shake etc) would've made them feel more powerful.

Generally an impressive effort though, good job!

I like the flow of this game and the skills you can use to fight off different enemies. The audio is lacking though. Once the mechanics have been figured out then it starts to get interesting. It would be nice if there was some way for the player to get an explanation on what some of the special abilities do.

Aug 25, 2015 @ 9:17am

The art in this is really nice, liked the colours used and impressed with the detail. The variety of weapons was also a nice touch but I did find myself standing in one position mainly to kill them as they came at me but definitely understandable with the time limit. Fun game :)

Nice pixel art !
Magic was a bit harmful to me so i was a bit scared of using it, and it was quite a fun situation to be a monster hidden in a corner with his fearful demonic red eyes haha...
Good job, is there a win condition ? I managed to stay alive 7 weeks ; the executable closing at game over is quite radical :)
Good work, especially with the mansion's design !

Very nice looking game. It was short and fun, with some slight glitches 'ere and there (enemies getting stuck in walls and I could warp out of bounds.) Other than that, it was really well made and I love the graphics. Great stuff!

Pretty nice! It's fun to play, even if sometimes I tried to warp and it did not seem to work :/
The graphics are neat, but the ghosts doesn't look too ghostly to me :P
Nice game!

Pretty basic gameplay, but still surprisingly fun! Art is pretty neat too! So, maybe not top, but overall of this one will be probably pretty high!

Lovely pixel art. Gameplay was smooth and the controls solid. Sound effects were maybe a bit too.. how to put it.. piercing? Made my ears hurt after a while.

Aug 28, 2015 @ 3:23pm

The scenary is wonderful and the game play is fun! but i did not notice the skills when i first played , and when i saw it, i had to guess how to use each one. Maybe some feedback increases would be a good one! =D But i really enjoy it - Congrats!

The game was beautiful like everyone else said, I checked to see if anyone else had issues with the mouse being too sensitive but didn't see anyone commenting, so probably just me. Playing on a mac with parallels though, so probably my bad.

pirate_shell says ...
Sep 6, 2015 @ 11:01pm

@Grahhhhh Hmm... I am not sure what might be causing that, really. The game doesn't alter the mouse movement and sensitivity in any way as far as I am aware so it might just be an issue on your end :/

it does feel like you turned the table on the old games like sabre wolf. would have love to have found more terror in the victims. but a nice laire and setup!

Awesome graphics! Mechanics are very good too! Although there could be more enemies type (but I suppose there would be no time for this), and warp didn't seem very useful, at least I forgot to use it and it played well.
It's a bit weird the weeks counting, since it feels like just one night passing xp
Anyway great job!

Sep 13, 2015 @ 2:03am

Very nice pixel work. The sound effects got kind of annoying after a while. The mixture of guys who shoot magic back at you and guys resistance to melee was a very good mixture of mechanics. Good work!

Man this was fun!
I think it becomes a tad unforgiving after the first stage, and the fact that the game closes after you die (instead of going back to the title screen) is a bit annoying.

Having said that, the game is incredibly fun. The art is gorgeous and the combat is smooth.

An incredible work, especially for a Compo entry. Kudos!

Mini Submission FAQ

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

CAN I ENTER BOTH EVENTS?: You should pick 1 event, whichever you think it’ll do better in. If the idea is strong, and everything plays well enough, you can go Compo. If you’re a perfectionist, and would prefer people to play a more polished game, do the Jam. Historically, more games are entered in the Compo, but with more people and more time, Jam games have the potential to be better (that doesn’t mean they are). Many solo participants do enter the Jam.

If you made 2 games, unfortunately, the website doesn’t support multiple submissions per user. To submit your 2nd game, you will have to make a 2nd account. Only do this if you made 2 games. Alternatively, if one game is better than the other, then consider just entering the better game.

CAN I KEEP WORKING UNTIL THE DEADLINE?: Yes! Immediately after the 48 or 72 hours, we do something called Submission Hour. As the name suggests, it’s an extra hour for you to package, upload, and submit your games. If there were catastrophic issues trying submitting your game, or you misunderstood how submissions work, that’s okay. It happens. We’re flexible. If you need advice, check with the folks on IRC. If you need an admin, get in touch.

CAN I KEEP WORKING ON MY GAME?: Oh definitely! You should! But for the sake of judging, keep the Compo or Jam version around. You can include a link to the Post-Compo/Post-Jam version of your game on your games page, but sure your main links are the original version.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate at least 20 games to improve your visibility (Coolness).

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crashes, win condition, or tiny bugs after the deadline. In a sense, this is like “porting” to support more players. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just fixing mistakes you should have caught had you been better rested.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs ( and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
