Ludum Dare 33 — August 21st-24th, 2015 — Theme: You are the Monster

The Alchemist

by sydan - Compo Entry

This is a game about crafting, stealth and a slow decent in to evil. Each day you must forage for the ingredients to make medicine for an injured traveller. Your fellow villages do not like you, you are a daemon and considered an outsider to the them. Over time the world changes and you might find yourself not just a healer... but a killer as well.

The controls are:

WASD - Move
E - Interact, Use, Pickup
Left Click Item Buttons - Use item (heal, invisibility, mark for death)

The game is not fully finished, there's no real introduction or conclusion, there is also no sound which I'm quite sad about... I think I bit off more than I could chew with this particular project. I'm very very tired now and I think I'm going to go straight to bed, I'm still pleased with the outcome of this Ludum Dare though!

The game only gave me a black screen, presumably because I don't have Flash installed and the clone (gnash) doesn't support whatever this game is using.

I love the lowpoly graphicstyle and the gamplay is very innovative :) . keep going

Interesting, but could do with a better tutorial.

@wijnen, were you trying the web player or the windows build? What OS are you on, I can try and do a build for it!
@FlashMonkey thanks! I think I'm going to have to take a break from this game for a while... it's drained me a lot!

The graphics are really great I like the low-poly rocks with flat shading. It looks like more professional indie rpgs. I also like the glowy HDR look.

Like the art style and perspective. A little hard when trying to figure out what to do. Well done!

Great game, I only wish you had time for sound. I loved the artwork.

@Sedsibi so do I! I considered going for the Jam and getting a load of good third party samples... but I'm just too tired...

Really love the graphic, really nice entry!
I suggest you to find a way to stop wall-walking (run towards a wall while alternating directions) because it can make the game too easy.

Absolutely loved the art. Great job.

Loved the graphical style. Took a little while to get my ingredient harvesting ramped up, but I liked the escalation of the fliers as time passed.

I really like the graphism and the feel of it; good job!

The gameplay works well

whoops: "Ivy will not wake up tomorrow"

The art style is really nice, and I did feel kinda bad for what I did.

I see low poly. I like. Easy.

Very cool styling. You should definitely continue working on this. It looks like it could be an interesting full game.

Great work! Looks wonderful but the depth of field effect may be a bit too much. The size and content of the game is really nice for a jam game.

I didn't play long enough but I wanted to rate it now and come back later. Excellent soft colours, visual style and effects are great choices. control is good and it feels like a big world is there.
Really simple generated sounds and ambience could have added a lot.
Excellent entry.

I really liked the graphics in this game and I thought it had a great idea. I wasn't sure how you were the monster. I ran around for a while and pressed E to collect herbs and a feature, but then I wasn't really sure what to do after that.

I think this game has a lot of potential but it is unfinished like was mentioned.

It is a great start, but next time it might be better to try a simpler game that can be completed by the deadline!

I really like the art style! Dealing with the watchers are a bit hard, but not too bad. Not sure what I was supposed to do at first either. Good job. :)

Impressive you tried to make a full on RPG in 48hr! Visuals're excellent, and it's an interest story concept. Those watchers're annoying to get around though :p

Looks super good! I was surprised to see that the characters are 2D sprites, they blend in so well with the rest of the world.

Aug 24, 2015 @ 5:18pm

I tried running it on firefox, chrome and ie and it doesn't launch :(

sydan says ...
Aug 24, 2015 @ 5:32pm

@axoona, that's interesting! What happens when you run it? Did it just not load or did it load and then not work?

axoona says ...
Aug 24, 2015 @ 7:37pm

The problem with launch seems to have gone magically (I had similar problems with some other Unity games), I don't really know what happened, there was a problem with plugin installation which didn't work but fortunately I left the window open and the game showed up after (a very long) while.. (sorry about that..)

Nice graphics and the mood it's a pity the game isn't finished

Very impressive visually, but the gameplay seems to be a bit repetitive and aimless. I'd love to see this expanded upon though.

Hey man, I loved your last LD entry and you did a great job for this one. Stunned by your artstyle, it delivers a perfect mood, I can't believe it's a 2 days one-man work ! Pretty nice gameplay too ! It's a memorable, great overall entry.

This is a great entry. The art style is awesome. You should totally make this a full fledged game!

Mini Submission FAQ

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

CAN I ENTER BOTH EVENTS?: You should pick 1 event, whichever you think it’ll do better in. If the idea is strong, and everything plays well enough, you can go Compo. If you’re a perfectionist, and would prefer people to play a more polished game, do the Jam. Historically, more games are entered in the Compo, but with more people and more time, Jam games have the potential to be better (that doesn’t mean they are). Many solo participants do enter the Jam.

If you made 2 games, unfortunately, the website doesn’t support multiple submissions per user. To submit your 2nd game, you will have to make a 2nd account. Only do this if you made 2 games. Alternatively, if one game is better than the other, then consider just entering the better game.

CAN I KEEP WORKING UNTIL THE DEADLINE?: Yes! Immediately after the 48 or 72 hours, we do something called Submission Hour. As the name suggests, it’s an extra hour for you to package, upload, and submit your games. If there were catastrophic issues trying submitting your game, or you misunderstood how submissions work, that’s okay. It happens. We’re flexible. If you need advice, check with the folks on IRC. If you need an admin, get in touch.

CAN I KEEP WORKING ON MY GAME?: Oh definitely! You should! But for the sake of judging, keep the Compo or Jam version around. You can include a link to the Post-Compo/Post-Jam version of your game on your games page, but sure your main links are the original version.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate at least 20 games to improve your visibility (Coolness).

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crashes, win condition, or tiny bugs after the deadline. In a sense, this is like “porting” to support more players. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just fixing mistakes you should have caught had you been better rested.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs (http://mysite.com/mygame.zip) and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
