Billy Goat Grub

by ChrisFagan - Jam Entry

**Play in full screen**

My wife and my first ever entry into Ludum Dare and it was awesome!

You're a troll who only eats goats, not deer or sheep, they're too gamey tasting. You've got about 2:30 to eat as many as you can, make sure to keep an eye out for the rare Billy Goats.

Controls:
Click to eat!

Make sure to play in Google Chrome/Firefox since it's made in Construct, there's something with HTML5, I'm not too sure though since I only just learned the software for this compo.

Programming/Design - Chris Fagan
Art - Lindsey Fagan
Sounds and Music - Julian Surma

Made in construct 2 with the art done in Photoshop, not sure about the audio, Julian did those remotely.

I have no idea where the hitbox is on the cursor but sometimes I click and it just doesn't register. Very nice art and sound though.

The collision boxes definitely need some tweaking. The art was beautiful, but I was kind of sad when I realized it was all static.

Congrats on your first LD!

Nice art and sound, it's not easy when it's going faster !

The hitbox wasn't always perfect. But felt pretty right at the start.

This is the best of this kind of game I've played this Ludum Dare, the targets were just the right level of challenge. The artwork was great! There were goat sounds. Excellent Job!

Thanks everyone! Sorry for the hitboxes, they were hard to get sorted perfectly. Glad you guys like the art!

I think it is so wonderful when a husband+wife makes games together! Great work on your game: I love the fabric textures and funny music!

I LOVE THE GRAPHICS! Audio is also quite good.
The game is too hard for me, but still nice.
I just enjoy staring the skys, clouds, trees, and flying animals.

Very unique art. The music is enjoyable for that kind of game. I would have expected the game to have a constraint like a timer or a game over if I eat the wrong meat repeatedly. I would also have expected the monster, who is the main character, to be animated somehow (another frame while killing the animals, or particle effects...)
Overall, very entertaining, fun entry.

Good little game.
I can never catch the big grey goat.

Awesome game! Nice art, music and cool gameplay. I loved how you connected the troll with the traditional lore! :)

Liked the textures. Some tips (positive feedback haha):
- Would love to see some animations.
- Starting menu, or at least and endgame screen (triggered by time, by errors...)
- Just to point it, if you do nothing, just look, when you reach 0 points sometimes the score text does weird things.

Hope it help!

Very good artstyle and the gameplay works well. However I would have loved to see some sort of goals. win state and loss state.

I really liked the sound effects. I wish there were more things happening in this game.

Hitboxes works fine enough -for me at least-, but I can't hear any sounds, which is weird because apparently there are according to the comments.

Thanks again everyone! Basically everything you guys have said are things we wanted in the game however I'm still learning Construct so there were a lot of things I couldn't get in in time. I'll do better next time!

A bit more feedback would be nice, like movement of the troll, something telling me if I missed or clicked out of range. Otherwise nice quick game

@Rialgar Yeah I wanted to get a bit more visual feedback in there but just didn't have the time unfortunately, will certainly work on that more in future jams though.

Thanks everyone!

Mini Submission FAQ

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

CAN I ENTER BOTH EVENTS?: You should pick 1 event, whichever you think it’ll do better in. If the idea is strong, and everything plays well enough, you can go Compo. If you’re a perfectionist, and would prefer people to play a more polished game, do the Jam. Historically, more games are entered in the Compo, but with more people and more time, Jam games have the potential to be better (that doesn’t mean they are). Many solo participants do enter the Jam.

If you made 2 games, unfortunately, the website doesn’t support multiple submissions per user. To submit your 2nd game, you will have to make a 2nd account. Only do this if you made 2 games. Alternatively, if one game is better than the other, then consider just entering the better game.

CAN I KEEP WORKING UNTIL THE DEADLINE?: Yes! Immediately after the 48 or 72 hours, we do something called Submission Hour. As the name suggests, it’s an extra hour for you to package, upload, and submit your games. If there were catastrophic issues trying submitting your game, or you misunderstood how submissions work, that’s okay. It happens. We’re flexible. If you need advice, check with the folks on IRC. If you need an admin, get in touch.

CAN I KEEP WORKING ON MY GAME?: Oh definitely! You should! But for the sake of judging, keep the Compo or Jam version around. You can include a link to the Post-Compo/Post-Jam version of your game on your games page, but sure your main links are the original version.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate at least 20 games to improve your visibility (Coolness).

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crashes, win condition, or tiny bugs after the deadline. In a sense, this is like “porting” to support more players. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just fixing mistakes you should have caught had you been better rested.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs (http://mysite.com/mygame.zip) and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
