Little Monster

by chipcaramel - Jam Entry

Jimun and Chip present their latest game created in Deep Vision; an engine dreamt up by Jimun.

The Story:
Prescott Sullivan was walking home from school one day when he happened upon two foxes loitering outside of a local grocery store. Suddenly a third burst out of the doorway, chased by the owner. These little monsters: They sneak in and steal food and are very much unwelcome there! Little did he know that he would be seeing them again.

Controls are configurable in-game.

Keyboard Controls:
Arrows - move
Space - Jump
Enter - Progress Menus
C - Attack
V - Attack
Left Shift - Sprint
Escape - Skip Cutscene

Gamepad Controls:
D-Pad - move
A - Jump/Progress Menus
B - Attack/Skip Cutscene
X - Attack
Left Bumber - Sprint

The Accomplishments:
We've pulled a lot of work together for this project!
We actually had time to test the game out, make sure it works (I think).
Cutscenes and introduction and story!
I didn't have much time to write music, but used some tracks I had on file.

The Frustrations:
There are no standard enemies in the game. We originally planned guards which would attack you as a fox.
There are no other NPCs in the game besides the intro NPC; post LD, we may add them!
The ability to change form at will got pushed off the drawing table for LD, but may come later.
The game world is sort of small, but offers one effortfully constructed level/puzzle.
Boss fight arena. Probably in a post LD version.

As Jimun and I tend to do, we've bitten off -slightly- more than we can chew in three days, but it didn't discourage us.
We've put effort together, gave it all we had to give, and finished with a working game.

Happy Ludum Dare 33, everybody!

Ambitious and endearing - I really enjoyed this. It felt particularly polished and un-rushed as a lot of jam games will feel like.

A lot of content here, good graphics! I love the mechanic of changing back and forth, but I changed in a narrow space and got stuck :( Plus the dialogues lack skip option. Good job overall.

This looks and sounds very nice, I like where you were going with the transformation idea but I got stuck at the big jump with the water tower so I didn't see much of the game. I think if you had concentrated on the gameplay and less of the story, you can make a more complete game!

Overall I really enjoyed this game, I found switching between human form and fox form a really innovated way for the player to solve the small puzzles you are presented with, I really found this game enjoyable but found that some of the jumps were a bit tedious to say the least and at one stage I just stopped playing for a bit because I wanted to move onto something else (some checkpoints of some kind would be nice too so you don't have to walk all the way back to a jump every time) I thought that it really suited the theme in an interesting way. I LOVED the cute art style and the audio was amazing (but since you didn't make it during LD I don't think that you can enter the category? But I rated you highly in it anyways), it was a bit funny at stages and the art style and audio made a wonderful mood and vibe. So I really loved this game besides some issues I had with the gameplay, still you are owed a well deserved well done.

Really enjoyed this game! Love the art and music. The concept is also really cool for a game. PS Nice Pokéball in your room XD

Well, I got stuck at the long jump too.
Couldn't jump when being a fox either, did I miss something?
Re-went up uncountable many times and this really brought a lot of frustration.
The graphics were great. And the game-play seemed interesting.
Nice job!

Oh! I'm so sorry!! If you hold SHIFT, you'll run, which makes the jump much easier. (I will add this to the controls. I knew I missed something)

Hi everyone! Thanks for playing! A couple notes on the controls.
Hold SHIFT to sprint, by default. This can get you over the long jump if you're a fox.
While human, you can engage crawling by pressing left and right while holding down. This should allow you to escape narrow spaces.
Down+Jump should let you pass through certain kinds of platforms, allowing to escape some places you might get transformed in.
If anyone still has problems, can't get the above controls to work, or finds a spot that can't be escaped, even with the controls I just listed, please let me know exactly where the problem occurs and I'll look into fixing it for a post-jam version.
Also this game includes default bindings for a 360 or other X-Input controller, if you prefer to play with a controller. Other controllers should work too, but will require manually rebinding the controls.

It's a good entry, I loved the little touches like not being able to walk properly on two legs when you first transform. It feels very well thought out, good work!

Mini Submission FAQ

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

CAN I ENTER BOTH EVENTS?: You should pick 1 event, whichever you think it’ll do better in. If the idea is strong, and everything plays well enough, you can go Compo. If you’re a perfectionist, and would prefer people to play a more polished game, do the Jam. Historically, more games are entered in the Compo, but with more people and more time, Jam games have the potential to be better (that doesn’t mean they are). Many solo participants do enter the Jam.

If you made 2 games, unfortunately, the website doesn’t support multiple submissions per user. To submit your 2nd game, you will have to make a 2nd account. Only do this if you made 2 games. Alternatively, if one game is better than the other, then consider just entering the better game.

CAN I KEEP WORKING UNTIL THE DEADLINE?: Yes! Immediately after the 48 or 72 hours, we do something called Submission Hour. As the name suggests, it’s an extra hour for you to package, upload, and submit your games. If there were catastrophic issues trying submitting your game, or you misunderstood how submissions work, that’s okay. It happens. We’re flexible. If you need advice, check with the folks on IRC. If you need an admin, get in touch.

CAN I KEEP WORKING ON MY GAME?: Oh definitely! You should! But for the sake of judging, keep the Compo or Jam version around. You can include a link to the Post-Compo/Post-Jam version of your game on your games page, but sure your main links are the original version.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate at least 20 games to improve your visibility (Coolness).

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crashes, win condition, or tiny bugs after the deadline. In a sense, this is like “porting” to support more players. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just fixing mistakes you should have caught had you been better rested.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs ( and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
