DEVELOPER NOTES
---
We're quite happy with the end result of this game, we had planned to add more features / attacks / objectives but, as always, all of our ideas can't be done in 72 hours!
We also had a new member join in this LD, Ollie, who spent his time doing all the character art & learning how to create sprite sheets for animations etc.
We had a few issues when trying to submit our game, issues which caused the built version to crash instantly (when it all worked in the Unity editor!). We managed to identify this as an issue with our sound files, so we reimported these corrupted sounds and everything appears to work OK *fingers crossed*.
If we had more time (or decide to do a post-compo version), we'd love to add in the following:
- More boss attacks & abilities (either unlocking over time or with hp decrease)
- More hero types (mage, rogue, etc)
- More playable boss types
- More levels
- More player objectives
- More character barks / names
- Fancy particle effects / lighting tweaks
- Smarter AI (with pathfinding)
- Environmental traps / interactive objects
- Balancing
We hope you enjoy playing what we did manage to create, as always Ludum Dare has been a blast! :D
Time to play + rate!

UPDATE 06/09/2015: POST COMP ENTRY AVAILABLE!
We spent some time after the LD33 competition improving, tweaking & adding a few new features to the game.
This includes:
– One new hero types (mage, ranged attack)
– Two new boss attacks (twin lazor & mega lazor)
– A new RAGE MODE ability (when low HP, player gets 1.5x movement and attack speed + unlocks mega lazor)
– One new music track (for rage mode)
– More character barks
– More character names
– Fancy particle effects / lighting tweaks
– Smarter AI
– Balancing
We hope you enjoy these improvements, obviously we’d love to add a load more – but as the base code was all written within 72 hours on very little sleep, we’d be better off making it again from scratch :)

I had no idea it felt this good to be a raid boss, also, how annoying healers are from the enemy's perspective.
Would like the controls to be a little more smooth, if you do that, add some different abilities, and a couple of features, I think you'd have a REAL tight game for serious submission.
BTW, I'm boots ranked #2 :D
What!? I'm third in the rank! :D Wait, it even have leaderboards! Wow.
Great game! Beautiful graphics and sound, nice concept (last boss on a MMO!) and really fun to play. It has been really satisfying to squash Sir Buttface and company. Good job!
Neat. I like it. However I think that the gameplay could be more complex, but it's good enough. Beautiful graphics and sound, nice concept. Controls are amazing. Thank you for this cool entry ++
This is probably the most pretty-looking game I've played so far. Great job!
Great graphics and great music! And only 72 hours. Congratulations, and go on developing this one, it can grow as a great game.
The pixel art is fantastic! The game felt really good to play and the sound snippets and usernames were funny too!
I would love to play a post-LD version!
Very nice graphics, but it got a little boring after a few waves because of the repetitive gameplay.
With the additions you intend to add, I'm sure it can become a lot better.
Nice job!
Gorgeous art/audio, nice gameplay and the idea of a reversed RAID it's awesome. Would have loved to have different abilities as Raid Bosses do, and perhaps the player could have done with more visual feedback when attacking. Loved it anyway and I'm also second in the leaderboard :)
Well done Hot Box, Really think it's one of the best I've tried, the graphics are great, the audio too, the gameplay is simply fun especially since you can see the healers tanks and dps from the other perspective. And there's even a rank system! good job overall!
Nice art and robot animation. Gameplay could have been more interesting.
Wooo 2nd place on the leaderboards (at the moment)!! It's a shame you didn't have time to add more enemy attacks (something like ranged attack from mage/ranger-like classes would have been cool) but I liked the idea of playing as a dungeon raid boss plus I loved the attack animations.
Art,audio and game concept are superb.. could have more addictive game play..
Well done you guys! I love the art and the concept. This would be such a cool project to expand on, where you control different bosses and attack in different ways. I see you have a big list of possible developments, hope you guys continue with it.
Oh yeah, nice Leeroy reference ;)
Miss some waves or leveling structure, but very entertaining and goog graphics, congrats!
Awesome entry. Very polished! Love the lightning effects, and Ollie did a great job on those sprites
I really enjoyed this game! Also, good luck removing me for the leaderboards! :D
I will never look at a raid boss the same way again!
The art and sound were pretty awesome, and the overall concept is pretty good. With a bunch more character types and better AI, and probably an unlock system for your boss to upgrade and choose attack types or defenses, you'd have a pretty solid final product I think. It would be pretty cool if you could truly be the "boss" and change the dungeon around as well to add traps or minions or something like that.
I felt as though the boss character could use a little more visual feedback when he gets hit. Some screenshake/flashing sounds or particle effects, etc would "sell" the hits better.
Loved the sprites and the lighting effects. A really good amount of polish put on this game within 72 hours. The game was fun to play as a raid boss defending its treasure. Way to go!
Feel really polished! Would have liked more abilities, but it looks and sounds great, and it's pretty fun too. :) It's a solid idea, and I can see it being really good if you developed it further.
Nice look and feeling! Feels very polished and has interesting game mechanics. Really felt like I was a raid boss. Became a bit repetitive after a while, would be very interesting to have some kind of power-up secondary weapon. Nevertheless, liked this a lot. Well done :)
Nice little game, could become something very interesting with more moves and levels, and maybe some healing mechanics?
PS: I can confirm the Linux version works!
Fantastic pixel art and animation! The AI was a bit stupid though, kept running into walls. Loved the scan line filter, really made the graphics stand out.
This is certainly a gorgeous game, but I kept getting hit randomly, I'm not sure what was happening. The gameplay is too simple to do this game justice. Very good overall.
OS X version works by the way.
This is a great game! The leaderboard makes for a very good competitive touch, and I wanted to keep playing. I got to #5 at the time of this comment.
Wonderful work!
Good fun, and nice art and audio.
If you continue with this post-jam, in addition to the things you have already planned, it might be interesting to have a fake 'aggro' mechanic, where you get new attacks the lower your health is - might be a nice risk / reward mechanic.
Woo, I'm freakin' Twintania! Or The Manipulator!
That might be an interesting direction to go in the future - additional bosses/characters with different mechanics (it would be HILARIOUS if I could Divebomb the daylights out of the players, or maybe summon adds to fight alongside me).
The one problem I had is that it's not clear you can't attack while moving - I kept pressing space and wondering why I wasn't doing anything until I tried it while I was standing still.
That said, if you need any extra names to include among your players, I suggest looking into .hack and Sword Art Online. I'll admit I was a LITTLE disappointed I didn't see a Kirito trying to hack his way through me. XD
Great graphics, cool concept! I like the sound, too. It's impressive you were able to make all this so quickly!
The idea is beautiful and art is solid, however I'm disappointed you didn't include spells or any ranged attacks (healing too -> as long as there are particles and spells flying around!). The controlled robot is way too simplistic, wish he had some other attacks/abilities.
I'm still really impressed, great job. I'd love to play a polished version that I hope you'll be making.
not bad. I felt like having movement limited to the cardinal directions was a bit strange considering that there were frames of animation where the boss faces diagonally, but it was easy enough to get used to.
I have to say that my favorite part of this game is the hero characters, though. They each feel like they have a lot of personality to them, between their randomly generated names and the surprisingly large pool of sprites that they seem to pull from.
awesome entry, the elemental animation is very good ! i got to rank 4 !! X) very cool feature the online leaderboard. The game could have a bit more depth to it, but this is ludum dare all the games could be better !
gj!
I'm the first! :D
Good game, very well fitted to the theme. Nice graphics & sound too. I miss two things though: something to recover life when you clear some waves and new abilities/mechanics to kill more soldiers.
Anyway, one of the most polished games I've played in this LD, good work all of you!
This game looked amazing, sounded amazing, controlled well, amazing!
Nice game. The gameplay needs some tactical elements, but good job! :)
Nice game. We had this exact same idea when we were brainstorming!
The graphics and sound are really nice. No obvious bugs as well which is good. Feels like it needs more depth. But I'm sure you'll get there as you add different attack types and units. Great proof-of-concept!
Fantastic game! The body parts and weapons of the fallen heroes littered on the floor gave me a good chuckle. The boss character is really well designed and I like the contrast of an automaton with traditional rpg heroes.
#19 on leader-boards!
Nice art too. And all the people are awesome with all of their comments!
Not bad. The graphics are top notch, as well as the tie in to the theme. Going against a raid, awesome. It felt a little bit like you spent too much time on visual polish and not enough on gameplay, because the gameplay could have used some refinement. Maybe another attack type, or defense, something like that. Overall, great job!
Impressive games!
Awesome graphics and nice audio. The leaderboard was a nice touch too.
The game could benefit from different attacks and more varied character types with better AI, but this is definitely a solid entry overall!
I really had fun with this entry and it's one of the few games I actually wanted to keep playing more and more. Congrats!
Graphics and music are super excellent. Game plays smoothly. Thoroughly enjoyed this one!
Nice game play with fantastic art and sound. Really nice job!
Total rush or total mush? Great take on them. Visuals and sound is right on. Moving around seems to just get you in trouble. Leaderboard is awesome too. Verdict... total rush!
Breathtaking graphics and cool audio. The controls were extremely stiff and it was hard to judge where or when we would get hit as the hitbox is not obvious. The animations kick asses but I'll admit are a little too slow, along with the attacks. Great game either way!
It was a great game! But it should have had a final form!!!
This game is awesome!! I had lots of fun playing it and it was a very interesting concept. Playing as a boss, really different. I loved this game's graphics and sounds. It was a lot of fun to play. Great job man :D
LEEEEERROOOOOY JEEEEN-*squish* This was a really fun game! The gameplay was pretty simple but fun at the same time. The art was probably my favorite part in this game. Everything just looks so polished and colorful. It was just a real treat to the eyes. :D
Really fun to play, but gets a bit repetitive after few rounds otherwise it's an amazing game, great graphics, effects, sounds/music and that you can see your global rank is a very nice idea.
It's the best looking game I've seen this LD. And I love the idea of being a final boss. Awesome entry.
Superb graphics and gameplay! I love the idea and the fun twist of the players' names xD Really good metagame, also with the competitive incentive of the leaderboards!
The graphics are amazing and the hero's names are the best. I didn't like how the boss shots.
Excelent job!
This is so professional, with the intro screen, a good looking ai. Can I ask you how did you do the plack pixels being on the screen? Shader?
God damn it. That was awesome - freaking well done you guys.
Great mini game! Fantastic art and lighting! The rage towards the end was cool. Made me feel like that sort of mechanic should have been more in it. Making you feel more like the boss. But still! Awesome. Well Done!
Beautiful game! Being able to move diagonally would be nice though...and didn't really feel like the raid boss with only one attack.
Rage mode totally made the whole game for me. The concept was fun and the artwork is gorgeous.
Awesome game! I really like the art and audio. Even if it lacks some content in the original version, I understand this since you had only 72h, but still it is really good and well polished! Good job! ;)
Really great job. Loved the visuals/effects, and nice humour. Well done. :)
Great game ^^! Beautiful game, smooth controls, thanks for showing me how good it feels to be the end boss!
The presentation was fantastic as both the music and graphics were well made. I especially like the old TV sort of effect the whole game had. The voices were amusing mostly due to how generic they sounded xD The gameplay was simple and to the point however I felt it was overly simplistic. One attack just wasn't enough to hold my interest for all too long. That said, this is impressively well made and I congratulate you on a great entry!
Such a great entry!
This game looks so nice, it's unbelievable you made this in 3 days!
5 stars for every aspect of it
Very impressive graphics and music, I also really liked the gameplay, it was very intensive. I had some trouble with the menu buttons, there was a bug making the buttons don't work correctly. Overall, awesome gameplay!
Beautiful aesthetics, annoyed me a little that controls were 4 directional but it added more of a challenge. Nice work guys! :D
Love to be the boss and smash the good! :-) Very cool entry!
Nice project !
Gameplay is a little to repetitive but everything else is good, especially graphics !
i thought this was pretty cool ^_^ its amazing the amount of netcode you guys churned out in 3 days plus the amount of animations! color me impressed xD
Nice! Very pretty art! The game felt fairly flat to me, wasn't much to do and the controls felt sluggish. I haven't played your post-comp version, which may have made some improvements.
I must say that this is one of the better games I've played during this jam, while far from perfect in any one aspect, everything was masterfully put together and the end result is a complete and well made game.
Amazingly beautiful graphics which compliment a great take on the theme. Really polished effort which was challenging and fun!
Would have loved some more attack moves, and a bit more variation. Standing still and holding down space was not very rewarding. The controls were a bit annoying as well (holding down left and up made the boss only go up). Still a very nice entry and a good concept.
The game is impressive. If there is a game so far I am impressed was made in 3 days it is this one. It is fun, very finished, very polished, many cool details like the way shooting happens, like how units look, how movement flows. You feel truly like a boss. Seriously for me one of the entries which impressed me the most here. And yay 26'th in the world leader boards in a single playtrough!
Beautiful art, the controls feel solid--everything feels great! Amaaaaaazing.
I found that it's easy to just kind of dilly-dally-dawdle around and drive my time score up if there are only one or two guys left that are easy to avoid. Perhaps there should be some way to limit the time you can spend on any given wave to deter excessive stalling.
Also walls are easily exploitable, but that should be fixed with the future pathfinding AI, right? Haha.

Fun and satisfying game. I loved all the names too. Awesome job you guys!
Great game and incredible polish! I played the pre-jam version. Would love to see more content, maybe different environments and attacks. Great job!
Tried both versions. Thought that it would be easier to get a good ranking in the highscores with the improvements of the post jam version, but seems that you restricted them to the original version only. Good call.
Looks and sounds neat, but the gameplay was a bit monotonous. Judging by the post jam version you have a vision on how to make it better though.
Great entry. Very polished game. Loved the graphics. For saying something, I miss the robot's diagonal movement, but this is a great job.
This looks so good. Love the art style! The potential for more strategy would be a nice improvement, but for 3 days this is very impressive. Nice work!
Great game! Enjoyed the animations and the art style was spot on. AI was a bit easily stuck in the walls and the jam version got a bit repetitive after a while - but a great job for 72 hours of work! Post-jam version is awesome, really fun.
Man, super awesome; fantastic entry
It would be nice to have some goals that made the game not endless (e.g. survive 10 waves to win), but otherwise it's superb
Very solid entry, I haven't checked the post-jam version yet but I can easily imagine how you could expand the entry into a more solid project. Great job!
Great work! The graphics are great and I like that the arms are so apart, shooting is hard. The four directions movement is a nice choice. Excelent work!
Psst - you have been featured in todays LUDUM DARE TO BELIEVE! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2nO6BNooPI
Nice one, a bit repetetive the gameplay, not much variation with the waves, they are just trying to kill me and not to get to the loot, a bit more AI would be nice.
You should win; this entry is amazing. Great graphics, gameplay, audio, I _love_ the magic missiles ;)
Woooo~~ I want more my friends come to play this game!@
very interesting!
the fireball is so Damnit! Especially when i in the rage-mode~~
aha~ now i am the no.1 of the ranking list~~( I love Rank list~ Especially for a cool game)ಠ౪ಠ
Very nice,
I played both version, the original one is a bit repetitive, but the post jam really correct all of this.
In both version the graphics are beautiful for pixels.
In both version, the final boss is still a bit slow... But it's ok if you are a giant robot. ;)
this is gorgeous work. Be proud, and good luck in the rankings :)
Very nice sound and graphics. I also like the player names. Simple but cool design. Sometimes a character get stuck, but this is just a minor glitch. I would like to have more feedback which player has hit me, so I can avoid it next time. This would make it less random.
Nice Job! Well done
Perfect. Graphics? Perfect! Audio? Perfect! Same for fun, theme, mood and overall. Inovation and humor got very good (4*). Good job! I must try postcompo!
I also liked that even if you mash space really hard, you'll still die.
Very nice. :D
And the post-deadline version is indeed a whole lot better still. :)
Great little gem! Presentation, gameplay, all pretty good. Rage mode really saved it from being repetitive. Nice one :)
The graphics were very nice, and had a very Tron feel to it. That said, I personally found the limited controls and monotone attack hard to appreciate. I did think the healers was a nice touch to add some strategy behind the game, but it didn't seem to go much deeper than, "hulk smash everything." More variety would be really nice.
Finally got the net to check this out and rate it. The graphics are incredible, the gameplay is fun. This is a good idea, guys! You should run with this and make a bigger game (and get some coin).
Overall fun and appealing. Good job!!
Solid, fun game. I included it in part 31 of my Ludum Dare 33 Compilation video series, if you would like to take a look :) https://youtu.be/smH_qgd8pMY

Mini Submission FAQ
TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.
CAN I ENTER BOTH EVENTS?: You should pick 1 event, whichever you think it’ll do better in. If the idea is strong, and everything plays well enough, you can go Compo. If you’re a perfectionist, and would prefer people to play a more polished game, do the Jam. Historically, more games are entered in the Compo, but with more people and more time, Jam games have the potential to be better (that doesn’t mean they are). Many solo participants do enter the Jam.
If you made 2 games, unfortunately, the website doesn’t support multiple submissions per user. To submit your 2nd game, you will have to make a 2nd account. Only do this if you made 2 games. Alternatively, if one game is better than the other, then consider just entering the better game.
CAN I KEEP WORKING UNTIL THE DEADLINE?: Yes! Immediately after the 48 or 72 hours, we do something called Submission Hour. As the name suggests, it’s an extra hour for you to package, upload, and submit your games. If there were catastrophic issues trying submitting your game, or you misunderstood how submissions work, that’s okay. It happens. We’re flexible. If you need advice, check with the folks on IRC. If you need an admin, get in touch.
CAN I KEEP WORKING ON MY GAME?: Oh definitely! You should! But for the sake of judging, keep the Compo or Jam version around. You can include a link to the Post-Compo/Post-Jam version of your game on your games page, but sure your main links are the original version.
PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate at least 20 games to improve your visibility (Coolness).
MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crashes, win condition, or tiny bugs after the deadline. In a sense, this is like “porting” to support more players. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just fixing mistakes you should have caught had you been better rested.
MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs (http://mysite.com/mygame.zip) and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.
NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
Awesome game. Makes me a little jealous knowing you made all this in 3 days.
