The Gold Eaters

by OFF - Compo Entry

Survive by eating all the gold coin you found.
Avoid humans and be aware that the other monsters could attack you.
Use hole in the walls to go in other rooms.

Arrow keys for move
Space bar for attack

Gold bar is for life, grow when you eat gold
Blue bar is for growth, grow when you eat gold, reset when you change of size.


Third entry ever made, not my best one, but this time with more time, but a sick boy.
Not my most original idea (a simple reverse role), but i have try several new things :
- sprite creation
- 2D animation
- procédural creation of each room
- AI based on a (very simple) FSM.

The Game Over is just a dead end, i add several text to write but a usual like of time, of technics, and bug, bug, bug...

More description tomorrow.

The game seems really fast. Is it on purpose? I barely can see movement of the other entities.

The mobs moved awfully quickly, and the view was very limited, so I didn't really know where to go/what to do. The graphical style was cool, though, and good music.

The music is so intriguing!
The props lightning felt a bit strange and the fighting could have been better comunicated but I liked the game and the monsters.

To Mantis:
the speed is due to a bug in with null object. Actually i built the game and keep several value for tweaking but it's still not perfect.
To boardtobits:
The small one move fatser than the big ones, the purpose was to create a challenge in the coin chase.
To Insality:
It's my first battle system actually the fact that you didn't have reaction or visual indication of a hit make the battle really bad. And there is no restart system...

Music was nice in the beginning but a bit repetitive. Battle system is very confusing even after growing multiple times killing anything seems pretty much impossible and I never know if I hit something or not. The blur again was a nice touch in the beginning but it quickly grows annoying.

Thanks for a precise feedback. I like it.
The track is 3min30 long but it's only based on 4 loops that are layered. First time not enough variation maybe based on action, but it lacks also of sound effects to create variation in the audio.
My apologie for the battle system, as i said earlier i have to code the hit animation, or even a point. The battle are not well balanced, because i had issue with battle too easy, enad then i pushed the difficulty too much further.
The blur is a matter of taste if think, when you grow it became less annoying, but it could be more living like the bloom i add.

Nice graphics, the music goes very well with the mood. But like the others said, the battle system is a bit confusing. Nice work anyway :)

Good game, the style of the game was really cool but it was somewhat buggy and gave me a lot of "object not found" exceptions.

The speed at which your character moves made for twitchy movements, which might be intentional to give the player a feel for how the character would really move about in its environment. The graphics were a little dark and I would have liked to see maybe a creepy ambient green/blue light emitting from some crystal shards embedded in the floors and walls. However, there was a good mood to the game. The music was pretty cool, too. Cool entry!

The graphics, mood and audio were nice. I wasn't ever able to attack anything though. I also ran into a bunch of gold that spawned in inaccessible locations. Once even the door was unreachable, prompting a restart.

- good music and atmosphere
- graphics look good
- text goes away before i can finish reading it sometimes
- attacking needs work, i cant tell the range and really needs a sound
- i died and then nothing else happened

Mini Submission FAQ

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

CAN I ENTER BOTH EVENTS?: You should pick 1 event, whichever you think it’ll do better in. If the idea is strong, and everything plays well enough, you can go Compo. If you’re a perfectionist, and would prefer people to play a more polished game, do the Jam. Historically, more games are entered in the Compo, but with more people and more time, Jam games have the potential to be better (that doesn’t mean they are). Many solo participants do enter the Jam.

If you made 2 games, unfortunately, the website doesn’t support multiple submissions per user. To submit your 2nd game, you will have to make a 2nd account. Only do this if you made 2 games. Alternatively, if one game is better than the other, then consider just entering the better game.

CAN I KEEP WORKING UNTIL THE DEADLINE?: Yes! Immediately after the 48 or 72 hours, we do something called Submission Hour. As the name suggests, it’s an extra hour for you to package, upload, and submit your games. If there were catastrophic issues trying submitting your game, or you misunderstood how submissions work, that’s okay. It happens. We’re flexible. If you need advice, check with the folks on IRC. If you need an admin, get in touch.

CAN I KEEP WORKING ON MY GAME?: Oh definitely! You should! But for the sake of judging, keep the Compo or Jam version around. You can include a link to the Post-Compo/Post-Jam version of your game on your games page, but sure your main links are the original version.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate at least 20 games to improve your visibility (Coolness).

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crashes, win condition, or tiny bugs after the deadline. In a sense, this is like “porting” to support more players. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just fixing mistakes you should have caught had you been better rested.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs ( and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
