Ludum Dare 32 — April 17th-20th, 2015 — Theme: An Unconventional Weapon

chromenopePSA: As of Chrome 42 (Released April 14th), NPAPI plugins are disabled by default! That means Unity Player, Java, and Silverlight games will not work in the Chrome browser! That said, Flash in the Chrome browser continues to work fine (PPAPI).

To Developers: Consider using HTML5 and WebGL instead. Having troubles with the export? Don’t worry. See Ports below.

To Players: A workaround is to enable NPAPI plugins in your Chrome settings. Click or Copy+Paste this URL in to a tab:

chrome://flags/#enable-npapi

As of September 2015 however, this option will no longer be available.

Other browsers (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari) and Flash are unaffected, but FWIW there is no Unity Player or Silverlight for Linux.X

Keyboard Warrior

You find yourself in a world where polygons of all shapes and sizes are attacking you. Upgrade your weapon to a keyboard, guitar, and even a fish. The game is simple, attack the polygons and collect powerups to stay alive. See how many kills you can get without dieing.

There's a lot more that I would have liked to add, such as more weapons and levels, but I ran out of time. I am still working on the game, and if you would like to see development updates subscribe to my youtube channel below. I am also working on a mobile port, you can check out my Google Play account below to check out my other games.

This is my first Ludum Dare entry, and I'm pretty satisfied about this game as far as a simplified gameplay and graphics. Most of my time was spent on the enemy spawning algorithm and the enemy pathfinding behavior for different shapes.

Dont't forget to post how many kills you got in the comments.

TOOLS:
Unity3d, c#, pyxel, bfxr, and audacity.

Made by an 8th grader. ;)

DIE you basic shapes! Nice idea and funny, though the attack felt a bit sluggish/unresponsive.

Very cool. Loved the look of the little guy. Nice use of the theme.

At first was a bit lost at using Enter as attack. And the rest of it was a bit silly - The levels and the enemies weren't very interesting ... Maybe tie it in with the weapon ? Like, what would you use your keyboard to defeat ... And where would you be doing it ... Some kind of story would go a long way.

Lots of fun and very funny to play!

Thanks guys, and right now theres a glitch that won't let the weapons upgrade, I'll be fixing it tomorrow (I have no time today). The weapon upgrades address the sluggish/unresponsive issue. (the first weapon is supposed to be bad so theres room to upgrade) The upgrades make the sword longer and swing faster, aswell as reduced the time you have to wait to swing again. Really sorry about this guys, I'll try to fix it as soon as I can.

(The weapon upgrades when I play it in unity, but not when I build for web... weird)

Nice game, a little hard (it's not easy to get first upgrade) but still fun!

Attack is a little sluggish, but not bad for a first time entry - if you are using WASD for controls, W could be jump rather than Spacebar

I loved the character animation for real. :D
And i hated basic freaking shapes.

Cool... Attack is a bit slow, and i did not understood inputs at first ... enter to attack that feels weird :)

nice game, using the enter button to attack really threw me off.

Made by an 8th grader? I'm impressed! Keep it up. I'd recommend polishing the attack speed and maybe using the mouse button as an attack instead of enter.

That's was a lot of fun. Great job! I hope you'll make another game for the next one!

Good art on the character. That sort of style is perfect for a 48 hour jam. Keep tweaking character control; the weapon swing was frustratingly slow. Not a bad entry. Lots of room for improvement. Good job.

Cool idea and the leg animation was pretty smooth. I feel like you missed a golden opportunity to use the phrase "Keyboard Warrior". It could use a little more time being polished, and the shapes are kind of a boring enemy. Maybe bugs, and the closest thing you had to swat them was your keyboard?

A decent entry. I hope to see more games from you in the future!

Congrats on being in eighth grade and making a game!

I'm not sure about enter as an attack key -- I kept trying to use left mouse key. Otherwise it was entertaining and kind of funny.

Pretty funny game. I like the art style. And the walking animation. :D Keep it going!

One thing you should look into is the upgrading mechanism, as the weapon is not changing when it should.

Thanks for the comments guys, i wish i could reply individually... a lot of people are complaining about the slow/sluggish attack, and that was actually intentional. This is because you were supposed to upgrade your weapon when you kill more enemies, (which makes the weapon faster/longer) but due to a Unity3d glitch, this feature is not working. In the Unity editor it is working fine and weapons are upgrading. But when I due the web build, for some reason this is not working. This is actually really frustrating to me because I put a lot of time into weapon upgrades... The game is a lot duller without it. (If anyone knows how to fix this, please contact me! (michaeldugle@gmail.com)

Also, alot of people are complaining about the artwork and animations, while some people like the simplistic style and think the animations are smooth. I understand this, I am a programmer and not at all an artist (Which is why I am using pixel art) and this was also my first attempt at animations. Some people also think that the controls are weird, I personally don't find anything wrong with it. I didn't have time to add control support, so I apologize for that.

Please keep on commenting, I love how everyone is liking the game and giving constructive criticism. Enjoy the game. :)

I've fixed it! Weapons now upgrade :). Apparently when you try to play a sound that hasn't been defined in the inspector, unity decides to skip the next 5 lines of code... Oh well, but now its fixed, play it now!

Cool concept, also the game feel is solid. One suggestion is to make the hurt feedback more obvious, as I thought touching the shapes would also destroy them.

Apr 22, 2015 @ 2:04am

This is pretty great for a first LD game. I got 42 kills :D

Super Hamster says ...
Apr 22, 2015 @ 2:16am

Got 74 kills! I feel like there is too much advantage to just camping in one spot and repeatedly attacking. Like there is no way to have strategy at the moment for this game because all you can do is spam attack and hide around platforms because the objects are so fast and unpredictable. Also there are some platforms that you can not reach. Anyways nice game! :D

DugelStudios says ...
Apr 22, 2015 @ 8:15pm

well I got 212 kills and I was moving around so camping isn't an advantage (I made the spawning algorithm so you can't camp). Also I don't think you realized that you can double jump :). Thanks for playing!

It's a silly idea, and I love your very practical art style! The progression feels a little bit grindy, though, and the weapons - while visually unconventional, play very much like standard melee weapon in a game. I would have liked to see some gameplay implications to whacking things with a keyboard!

This was fun, it reminds me of Super Crate Box. The only problem was that the enemy patterns felt too random.
Anyway, good job!

The graphics are fine. But the attack was slow and is a good area of improvement.

FeniX says ...
Apr 23, 2015 @ 8:36pm

I've checked it again and the upgrade system works well! I like it that you get a weapon that allows you to be in safer distance when destroying those shapes. :) However, it might be good to think about more differences about weapons maybe to make it more fun to progress. :)

And still the most lovely thing is the animation of walking. :D

Keep it going!

So the concept is funny, and very "meta" game like.
Good, simple graphics too.

Mini Submission FAQ

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

CAN I ENTER BOTH EVENTS?: You should pick 1 event, whichever you think it’ll do better in. If the idea is strong, and everything plays well enough, you can go Compo. If you’re a perfectionist, and would prefer people to play a more polished game, do the Jam. Historically, more games are entered in the Compo, but with more people and more time, Jam games have the potential to be better (that doesn’t mean they are). Many solo participants do enter the Jam.

If you made 2 games, unfortunately, the website doesn’t support multiple submissions per user. To submit your 2nd game, you will have to make a 2nd account. Only do this if you made 2 games. Alternatively, if one game is better than the other, then consider just entering the better game.

CAN I KEEP WORKING UNTIL THE DEADLINE?: Yes! Immediately after the 48 or 72 hours, we do something called Submission Hour. As the name suggests, it’s an extra hour for you to package, upload, and submit your games. If there were catastrophic issues trying submitting your game, or you misunderstood how submissions work, that’s okay. It happens. We’re flexible. If you need advice, check with the folks on IRC. If you need an admin, get in touch.

CAN I KEEP WORKING ON MY GAME?: Oh definitely! You should! But for the sake of judging, keep the Compo or Jam version around. You can include a link to the Post-Compo/Post-Jam version of your game on your games page, but sure your main links are the original version.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate at least 20 games to improve your visibility (Coolness).

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crashes, win condition, or tiny bugs after the deadline. In a sense, this is like “porting” to support more players. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just fixing mistakes you should have caught had you been better rested.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs (http://mysite.com/mygame.zip) and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
