Ludum Dare 32 — April 17th-20th, 2015 — Theme: An Unconventional Weapon

chromenopePSA: As of Chrome 42 (Released April 14th), NPAPI plugins are disabled by default! That means Unity Player, Java, and Silverlight games will not work in the Chrome browser! That said, Flash in the Chrome browser continues to work fine (PPAPI).

To Developers: Consider using HTML5 and WebGL instead. Having troubles with the export? Don’t worry. See Ports below.

To Players: A workaround is to enable NPAPI plugins in your Chrome settings. Click or Copy+Paste this URL in to a tab:

chrome://flags/#enable-npapi

As of September 2015 however, this option will no longer be available.

Other browsers (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari) and Flash are unaffected, but FWIW there is no Unity Player or Silverlight for Linux.X

Gangster Block Manager

by ThirdMoon - Jam Entry

You are a Gangstar controlling a bar in the neighborhood, in order to complete the mission assigner, you have to expand your control. Pay attention to the double economy made by Black(dirty) Money and Clean Money. Remember to pay your Fellas and your taxes in order to resist and become the King Of The Block!

Note: "An unconventional weapon" because if you don't pay, your Fellas'll kill you!

EDIT : thx for all suggestions, I'm making a post combo to update my game =)

EDIT 2: Post mortem is now (almost) completed!!!!

Hello everyone! I finally complete my post mortem version of Battle Block Manager. I’ve done many upgrades to the first jam project and add some feature to balance the game. I’ve spent a lot of time doing this version cause I’m alone. =(

At first I made a new GUI, I think it more exaustive and functional than before. I’ve also add, as first step, a real calendar.

At second I designed some feature on stores :
– I’ve add a local economy of every store, every store has to pay taxes and to restists itself; if not, it goes out of business and it can’t accept deals from citizen. Consequentially you can pay its debt and buy some percentage of ownership (or simply pay if you already own it). Store taxes are composed by two part : fixed costs and deals percentage.
– Stores have now a open/close hour, when citizens can buy something, this feature influences the fixed cost because it is calculated on how many hours the store are open.
– Every store has an appeal index that increase/decrease how many citizen come to the store. Appeal can be increased / decreased modifing in the opposite way the average cost or it can be increased activating upgrades. ( In future this index can be related also to an economy index, to a season index or/and to a trend index. )

At third I’ve add some other enemy :

Thief and Killers! The thieves rob from your citizen’s wallets (and they’ll spend less). The killers simply kill citizen, for no reason. xD
Initially this feature was related to the frequence of citizen spawn based on the security of the block, but at the moment this part isn’t completed and tested.

At fourst I’ve added some feature on Fellas:
– in the first version, fellas are simply a guard from enemy, but now they can increase the black deal probabily upgrading in Drug dealer or Weapon Dealer and they can kill Killers and Thives upgrading into Guards.
– Also Fellas’ gun can be upgrades to be more efficent on enemies.

As I’ve already said I’m sorry the game is not so much in theme with “An unconventional weapon”, my first and still main though was that a gangster can be killed only by financial trouble. So this is the unconventional weapon against gangster. :)

You should have exported as WebGL - game does not run in chrome.

Regardless, I could not figure out what to do, the in game "tutorial" was not very helpful.

I liked it! It's kinda rare to find a strategy-oriented game on here, let alone a well-designed one! Good job!

I have no idea what to do, nor what is happening. But I kept the browser window open, because the music is great.

Just when I thought I had understood the strategy behind it, I lost because the bar suddenly became independent for some reason. It's quite hard to know what's going on when the game doesn't tell you when something happens. I didn't find the tutorial very helpful either. Otherwise, I think the game is quite fleshed out, but could use some polishing. I also don't get how it's related to the theme. Good job on UI, graphics and sounds!

It feels like a nice game, but the information screen isn't quite clear on how much I'm gaining from each building, hence its a bit confusing whether i'm earning anything at all.

I got it to run in Chrome just fine, and I love it! It reminds me of Dope Wars from back in the day, I loved the shit out of that game.

This seems too complicated for me :P Couldn't pass the easy mission. Good game though!

This game is really difficult, and I'm still not entirely sure what I was supposed to be doing. Also, I kept getting a glitch that prevented people from entering my buildings.

Interesting idea and I like the split screen design for the game window/UI.

Suggestion: A bit difficult to figure out, even a little bit of text at the beginning of the game would help.

I feel there's a lot to this game, and that I'd be able to appreciate it more if I understood it more; I definitely think you should develop this more and add a better tutorial at the beginning, because you've developed something potentially great and it would be a shame for people to miss out. It's a really neat concept, with graphics and audio that enhance the mood really well - I especially like watching the little people moving about on the screen. Good job!

Mini Submission FAQ

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

CAN I ENTER BOTH EVENTS?: You should pick 1 event, whichever you think it’ll do better in. If the idea is strong, and everything plays well enough, you can go Compo. If you’re a perfectionist, and would prefer people to play a more polished game, do the Jam. Historically, more games are entered in the Compo, but with more people and more time, Jam games have the potential to be better (that doesn’t mean they are). Many solo participants do enter the Jam.

If you made 2 games, unfortunately, the website doesn’t support multiple submissions per user. To submit your 2nd game, you will have to make a 2nd account. Only do this if you made 2 games. Alternatively, if one game is better than the other, then consider just entering the better game.

CAN I KEEP WORKING UNTIL THE DEADLINE?: Yes! Immediately after the 48 or 72 hours, we do something called Submission Hour. As the name suggests, it’s an extra hour for you to package, upload, and submit your games. If there were catastrophic issues trying submitting your game, or you misunderstood how submissions work, that’s okay. It happens. We’re flexible. If you need advice, check with the folks on IRC. If you need an admin, get in touch.

CAN I KEEP WORKING ON MY GAME?: Oh definitely! You should! But for the sake of judging, keep the Compo or Jam version around. You can include a link to the Post-Compo/Post-Jam version of your game on your games page, but sure your main links are the original version.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate at least 20 games to improve your visibility (Coolness).

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crashes, win condition, or tiny bugs after the deadline. In a sense, this is like “porting” to support more players. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just fixing mistakes you should have caught had you been better rested.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs (http://mysite.com/mygame.zip) and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
