To Developers: Consider using HTML5 and WebGL instead. Having troubles with the export? Don’t worry. See Ports below.

To Players: A workaround is to enable NPAPI plugins in your Chrome settings. Click or Copy+Paste this URL in to a tab:

As of September 2015 however, this option will no longer be available.

Other browsers (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari) and Flash are unaffected, but FWIW there is no Unity Player or Silverlight for Linux.X

Berry | The Last Straw

by yuigoto - Jam Entry

A really short and crappy game by Fabio Y. Goto. :3

Berry is a strawberry, the last one actually :P, in the middle of a zombie grape apocalypse. He knows he's goin' down, but not without a fight!

To fight the horde of zombie grapes his only weapons are his own seeds, but he has to spin really fast to throw'em on to cause enough damage. The downside of this is that he doesn't have control on the direction of his projectiles!

But there's more! The seeds are parts of his own body so, whenever he throws one he starts to lose juice!

Luckily, he can regrow the seeds he threw and recover his own health, BUT he can't do both at the same time! Berry can only recover his health with his pack full of seeds!

Run, shoot, wait, recover, shoot again, run even more then DIE! :3

Too bad for you, Berry...

- Click with Left Mouse Button and drag to move the character;
- Press and hold spacebar to shoot;

P.s.: I didn't put the controls before, so sorry for the lack of info. >_<...

FIX (for the web version):
I know I'm late, I let real world stuff take most of the time I planned on improving or fixing this entry, but I did a small "fix" on the Web version of the game for spawn limit, mob attack power and bleeding.

This fix, though, might have increased the difficulty of the game, since health falls down pretty quickly now. Makes you manage your shots a bit more. :P

Thanks for everyone who played (or just visited this page)! :)

Neat game, especially like the visuals and the music. The gameplay's a bit lacking though; it's not clear how to avoid losing health. It almost doesn't seem worth it to even try to dodge the berries.

Really liked the concept of balancing health and enemies. Had some lagspikes after spawning a lot of enemies and then spawning a lot of bullets. The art was cute :)

Visuals were cool, music was good, I liked the idea. It's just lacking substantial gameplay. Also it started to drop frames while I was attempting to work out the controls on my first try (this is using the webplayer)

Awesome little game :)
The visuals are very pleasing and Health-Regen depending on your ammo is a great idea. Simple mechanics but you still have too find the right balance between attack and dodge.
The Web-Version slows down on my machine when there are a lot of enemies, but it could just be me.
I think this is the most unconventional weapon I have seen so far ;)

I really like your game, very fun twist on a theme!

Fun game love the idea and I enjoy killing all the berries with seeds/pips (whatever they are called) not sure if its just me but it gets a lil laggy when they spawn kind of. Still, good game

Great idea, the enemies could do more damage unless there was some oddity due to lag spikes. Shooting hurts you more from juice loss than just standing there with the whole swarm.

Cute art style. The number of enemies gets out of control a bit too quickly, to the point it actually lagged me a little bit :P

Nice weapon, very unconventional. Good graphics and audio tie this one together. Would be nice to see more variety in the challenges too (obstacles, different enemy types, power ups, etc). Nice work!

First of all, thanks to everyone who commented on my entry. Really, thank you!

I know the game has (lots of) flaws and I plan to improve'em soon, but here are some answers (I think):

About the lags, I know it has some lags and I plan to correct it as soon as I can. That's because I didn't plan the spawning methods so I used just some criteria based on time survived. Also, probably my bad use of OpenFl's TileSheet may have something with the performance. :P

About collisions, another thing I did want to implement, but rushed too much and couldn't. I do plan on improving upon this idea, either post-jam version or an improved version.

About shooting, mobs and health, I did plan on making enemies doing more damage and it was like that at first. I plan on balancing this also. :)

Will improve upon this idea to make it a full game, with more modes, maps, characters and stuff, already started plannin' it! I hope it'll be fun to play it. :)

And, again, Thank YOU! :)

Pretty neat game design, especially on how the weapon works and how berry regains seeds and health. Graphics were pretty cool as well, sound was okayish...

Things that need improvement: 1) Enemy spawning algorithm causes lag and is not very interesting. 2) Make the controls clear; when starting didn't know how to shoot and just ran around like an idiot. 3) Grapes are too fast!

Good entry,, good luck!

Cute game and nice concept, I would have liked a bit more 'collision feeling', like being pushed around instead of run over! Good job!

It's pretty cute :) Game had extremely poor performance on my laptop after I played for a little while, making it even more challenging ;) Loved the theme though! Also liked the music a lot

Its a short game but I like you're implemention of the weapon. Saw the first mockup of the strawberry and the final version is really lovely! If the enemies would run a little bit slower or spawn less at the same time, you would have more time to play! Nice game.

I played the web version and had no idea how to shoot :(
A small text in the game indicating the controls would be nice. I really like the graphics and your approach to the theme was great!

Not bad. The game has quite a bit of lag and the hp/ammo could be balanced. Anyways, I like the cute graphics and audio. :)

Funny and original game. Nicely drawn and pleasant music. Would be even better with some powerups that did absurd things.

Apr 29, 2015 @ 12:31pm

One of my favourite graphics so far. Not polished but so much style. The designs and colours used work so well and that title screen and death screen are so cute. Loved the design of this one just hoping you are able to expand a bit more on the gameplay aspect to compliment the awesome graphics and nice music.

Only issue is since so many blueberries are spawning in large numbers it made the game lag big time. Not a heck of a lot to do in this game, but it was fun none of the less. Good artwork and music.

One thing that I got very concern, there isn't a limit of how much berries are spawned? If not, I strongly suggest you to limit, fixes can be done after the jam time. I'm suggesting because after a time it started to slow down and I had to close the game because I thought that my browser would crash, which is a very serious issue.
When I first played, I didn't know which command is used to attack and my character stayed very healthy even if many berries around him. o0
Other than these two things, very cute game! :3

Once again, thanks to everybody who played it! I know it has lots of flaws (framerate, collisions and other stuff), thanks to everyone who pointed its flaws and told what they liked, or not, about the game. It's my first entry and I'm happy you played it! :)

I'm sorry I couldn't code a post-jam version or fix it until now (unfortunately I had a lot of work these last days and didn't have proper time :/ ), I did a small fix for spawn limit, mob attacks and bleeding for the web version (that might have increased difficulty and play time a tiny bit >_<), since it was the most unstable. :3

I plan to keep working on this idea, together with another game I'm currently making. I hope I can use all the tips and things I've learnt on this jam to make it into a nice and fun game for everyone. :)

Thanks for all the comments, thanks for those who didn't comment, thanks for those who just visited this page and thanks LD! :)

Ha ha! What a nice little game!!! My Wife, my doughter and me love your graphics!!! When I've played your game there came a loud "CUUUTEEEE" from behind! Very well done! Great first LD game!

After I've made a little tactic it becomes quiet easy, but was fun! I just ran clockwise at the border of the playground and the grapes gather together in the middle and when my health was at 200 I activated the seeds and head to the middle of the bunch of grapes! When all were finished I continued my border run!

Thank you for your game! It's great!

Hehe, reminds me of Strawberry Shortcake. :D

It took a lot of time 'til I figured I can shoot with SPACE, because I looked at the webpage for info, and it is not stated there. Then I read the instructions here and found the wisdom.

After all, I gave 5 in all category, because I honestly think it deserves it.

Mini Submission FAQ

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

CAN I ENTER BOTH EVENTS?: You should pick 1 event, whichever you think it’ll do better in. If the idea is strong, and everything plays well enough, you can go Compo. If you’re a perfectionist, and would prefer people to play a more polished game, do the Jam. Historically, more games are entered in the Compo, but with more people and more time, Jam games have the potential to be better (that doesn’t mean they are). Many solo participants do enter the Jam.

If you made 2 games, unfortunately, the website doesn’t support multiple submissions per user. To submit your 2nd game, you will have to make a 2nd account. Only do this if you made 2 games. Alternatively, if one game is better than the other, then consider just entering the better game.

CAN I KEEP WORKING UNTIL THE DEADLINE?: Yes! Immediately after the 48 or 72 hours, we do something called Submission Hour. As the name suggests, it’s an extra hour for you to package, upload, and submit your games. If there were catastrophic issues trying submitting your game, or you misunderstood how submissions work, that’s okay. It happens. We’re flexible. If you need advice, check with the folks on IRC. If you need an admin, get in touch.

CAN I KEEP WORKING ON MY GAME?: Oh definitely! You should! But for the sake of judging, keep the Compo or Jam version around. You can include a link to the Post-Compo/Post-Jam version of your game on your games page, but sure your main links are the original version.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate at least 20 games to improve your visibility (Coolness).

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crashes, win condition, or tiny bugs after the deadline. In a sense, this is like “porting” to support more players. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just fixing mistakes you should have caught had you been better rested.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs ( and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
