Ludum Dare 32 — April 17th-20th, 2015 — Theme: An Unconventional Weapon

chromenopePSA: As of Chrome 42 (Released April 14th), NPAPI plugins are disabled by default! That means Unity Player, Java, and Silverlight games will not work in the Chrome browser! That said, Flash in the Chrome browser continues to work fine (PPAPI).

To Developers: Consider using HTML5 and WebGL instead. Having troubles with the export? Don’t worry. See Ports below.

To Players: A workaround is to enable NPAPI plugins in your Chrome settings. Click or Copy+Paste this URL in to a tab:

As of September 2015 however, this option will no longer be available.

Other browsers (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari) and Flash are unaffected, but FWIW there is no Unity Player or Silverlight for Linux.X

Space Cowboy

by JK5000 - Compo Entry

It is like so many others, my first time I participate in LD. I'm just her to try, to make a game in just two days.

I hope somebody will like my little Space Shooter Game.

The game is about getting some aliens, not too kill each other. This is done by shooting love too them, when there are lightning symbols over their heads. But be careful not shooting them too much, because too much love will also kill the aliens.

Now you only find a post compo version.

Updates and fixes in the post compo:

- General much better gaming experience
- Explanation of why you are "Game Over"
- Better volume balance between audio clips, plus more audio clips.
- Better control
- New visual for the gun
- Improved animations
- Hopefully less bugs
- And much much more

To control the town sheriff, use ASDW keys, along with the mouse.

I really liked the graphics. Also welcome to Ludum Dare. :)

I love the mouth-sounds! I had like that same wind one in mine! I had a little trouble figuring out what I was supposed to do, and kept failing for reasons I couldn't understand. What do they say when they slump over?

I loved the setting and all the voices! I wasn't really sure what I was supposed to do, once I shot a couple people I got a game over screen and I couldn't restart. The game has a lot of charm though and if it was more fleshed out I think it could be really fun!

And I now, I did unfortunately not to make a reset function.

The creatures look hilarious. I really like them. I was super confused as to what I was supposed to do. Then, suddenly, it froze, and I lost.

I'm loving the 3d models and animations, though I'm not really sure I understand how to play. I click a guy and the game ends? Did I win?

Awesome first entry! The concept is nice, and the graphics and sounds are cute. However, I would have liked to see more clearly what's going on. There is no real indication of progress and when the "Game Over" appeared, I didn't know why. Your game creates a solid basis for a more extended version!

Also, a tiny piece of advice, since you're a first-timer: I think most people prefer downloading ZIPs which contain a single folder with all the files inside (at least I do). That way, extracting is easier. :)

Apr 20, 2015 @ 10:40am

Really fun game! Nice graphics and sounds. Controls are simple but the objective is unclear (lithning symbols always reappear). Fun to play though, nice work! :)

You should make it with an increasing difficulty the longe I play, because it was game over for me after only 6 seconds and i have no idea why. At least I could still shoot after hit enjoing the "pui" sound of the gun :) The graphics are okay but the overall game still needs some love :)

Apr 20, 2015 @ 6:04pm

First 3-4 attempts ended at <10s. Wasn't sure what was going on, but I think because I didn't realise you could move, I was shooting the first alien to get angry but the hit detection was grazing the alien between me and the angry one.

Sooo once I realised you could move around the scene things got a lot better.

The voice chatter from the aliens is great, they look like jellytots too which is pretty amusing.

The mouse sensitivity is stupendously low so I cut my successful run short at just 45 seconds to avoid getting wrist pain.

So overall, pretty funny. Lots of potential if developed further :)

Welcome to Ludum Dare! I liked the concept of your game, and the sounds are hilarious! ;)

Was there a specific exit key or command? I had to ALT+TAB out and close the game window.

You can close the game with ALT + F4

I like the look of it. A little more varying animations and it would feel like there is actually something going between the aliens. Also the mouse sensitivity too slow for me. Takes away from the responsiveness.

I like the art, you clearly have some skill with modelling. I found the game itself tricky to understand and play. But a good first entry!

Apr 23, 2015 @ 9:52am

Those are the cutest aliens ever! It's sad that they die from too much love though :(

Overall a good entry, I liked it

Nice idea and it looks really good. It's quite hard to judge what's going on in the whole room quickly. I love the gun sound effect.

Apr 25, 2015 @ 5:30pm

Solid first attempt. Graphics and animations are great. Needs a little more in terms of instruction, I wasn't sure if there was a win condition?

ok, i had an issue with the game locking the mouse pointer to the center of the window, which i really disliked. apart from that - it's nice and silly, kinda fun running around shooting love at aliens. i didn't quite understand what was going on, really, but it seemed to really fit the theme, and i enjoyed the pew-pew-ness of the shooting.

Graphics were really good, liked the wind noise and saloon environment.

FrederickK says ...
May 8, 2015 @ 12:32am

Because the game is very different from what you normally expect, you have a gun, but you not supposed to kill the enemies and etc, it needed an introduction with what is the goal of the game or a more clear help option.
I always like very much when people use their voice in the games, makes it very funny and me wonder how other devs are like haha.
You did a lot of stuff with the time you had, good job! :)

Pretty interesting idea and I loved the sound effects but definitely not a fan of the mouse pointer being locked to the centre of the screen. Also some visual effects to show where you're shooting (like a laser) would be nice.

Mini Submission FAQ

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

CAN I ENTER BOTH EVENTS?: You should pick 1 event, whichever you think it’ll do better in. If the idea is strong, and everything plays well enough, you can go Compo. If you’re a perfectionist, and would prefer people to play a more polished game, do the Jam. Historically, more games are entered in the Compo, but with more people and more time, Jam games have the potential to be better (that doesn’t mean they are). Many solo participants do enter the Jam.

If you made 2 games, unfortunately, the website doesn’t support multiple submissions per user. To submit your 2nd game, you will have to make a 2nd account. Only do this if you made 2 games. Alternatively, if one game is better than the other, then consider just entering the better game.

CAN I KEEP WORKING UNTIL THE DEADLINE?: Yes! Immediately after the 48 or 72 hours, we do something called Submission Hour. As the name suggests, it’s an extra hour for you to package, upload, and submit your games. If there were catastrophic issues trying submitting your game, or you misunderstood how submissions work, that’s okay. It happens. We’re flexible. If you need advice, check with the folks on IRC. If you need an admin, get in touch.

CAN I KEEP WORKING ON MY GAME?: Oh definitely! You should! But for the sake of judging, keep the Compo or Jam version around. You can include a link to the Post-Compo/Post-Jam version of your game on your games page, but sure your main links are the original version.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate at least 20 games to improve your visibility (Coolness).

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crashes, win condition, or tiny bugs after the deadline. In a sense, this is like “porting” to support more players. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just fixing mistakes you should have caught had you been better rested.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs ( and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
