Ludum Dare 32 — April 17th-20th, 2015 — Theme: An Unconventional Weapon

chromenopePSA: As of Chrome 42 (Released April 14th), NPAPI plugins are disabled by default! That means Unity Player, Java, and Silverlight games will not work in the Chrome browser! That said, Flash in the Chrome browser continues to work fine (PPAPI).

To Developers: Consider using HTML5 and WebGL instead. Having troubles with the export? Don’t worry. See Ports below.

To Players: A workaround is to enable NPAPI plugins in your Chrome settings. Click or Copy+Paste this URL in to a tab:

chrome://flags/#enable-npapi

As of September 2015 however, this option will no longer be available.

Other browsers (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari) and Flash are unaffected, but FWIW there is no Unity Player or Silverlight for Linux.X

The Murderers of Originality

by IamAcoconut - Compo Entry

Um it's about the search for originality and stuff....

Basically, you're a ninja, and all your ninja friends are making fun of you because your weapon is the unconventional banana gun. So you decide to take them out! After you beat them, however, they copy you and also use your weapon, making it conventional.

There is a bug where you infinitely jump. If you come across it please stop pressing the up key, you will eventually just fall back down.

-ALSO IMPORTANT-

IF YOU DOWNLOAD THE STANDALONE PLEASE PLAY IN WINDOWED MODE, I DID NOT HAVE TIME TO MAKE A QUIT BUTTON!

THIS IS SORT OF, KIND OF A RAGE GAME... KUDOS IF YOU BEAT LEVEL 3.

LOOK AT THE THIRD THUMBNAIL IF YOU ARE LOST ON LEVEL 2 AT THAT POINT! YOU KIND OF HAVE TO LOSE A LIFE THERE...

UNITY WEBPLAYER MAY LAG....

AT LEVEL 3 IF YOU ARE USING ARROW KEYS USE S FOR SPECIAL POWER AND VICE VERSA

----BUG FIXES----

1. Fixed it so you can't infinite jump on the first level

2. The banana should now always shoot in the direction your facing

3. In standalone build, the instructions don't get cut off based on your
screen size

4. Deleted apples in third level so the game doesn't lag

Hi,

A straight-forward entry, I had some fun. The comments are funny at first but can get a little annoying.

Nice! At first I didn't understand why dead at the last stage, but fun. I like voice.

I found it really fun, hard (for me) but fun! I felt the hurtbox and hitbox areas were a little off, but the idea was cool overall

Voice over was pretty annoying... entry was okay to play... Would make the other ninjas a bit slower xD Second level weapon is a bit worthless... I preferred to dodge fights than to try and fight. A small cooldown between hits you take would be good as well, to allow you to "get out" of combat and prepare again.

Good luck!

Lol, the deadpan voice made it! :)

I couldn't get past level 3, needed just a bit more limited invincibility. :P

Pretty hilarious game! Every time the game started talking I was like "shut up kid!" Great entry, high marks from me.

This is one of the most fun games in the jam. I hope you get more traffic. You mock us so well. Raising apples is a pretty awesome attack and I really like how you float in the air with your arms apart like its some sort of huge spell and then four apples fall. Brilliant! The enemy animations are actually really well done and while simple I feel that they are a lot more effective and charming than many of the more detailed character art you see around the compo. Super funny and one of my favorites.

I love how you can just jump on their heads and stand on there without getting shot. :D
The comments are sometimes a bit too silly for my taste, but you've managed to get some good gameplay in spite of the not very seriously interpreted theme.

Liked the encouragement! Also the gameplay feels solid for a rage game! Didn't manage to get past the first level.

Hi,
To start with, I thought the voices were hilarious at first, but they got a little old after a while. But considering that most people only play these games for like 5 minutes, I think it was a good decision to add. Getting stuck on walls, kinda got annoying after a while, and the game had some work to be done in both the art and (surprisingly, considering you were using Unity) the physics (You need to harness the powers of Newton and make people fall faster!). If you could make it a bit more responsive and easier to predict where you will go once you jump, I think that will take care of the difficulty. Good job, and hope to see you next LD!

Idea of absorbing your weapon is good. But I went in place, where two of enemies shoot bananas under cover and I can not overjump or deal damage with apple shower.

@stoarch there is a hint in the 3rd screenshot. You have to climb up the boxes. Thanks!

Pretty good, it really fit the theme, a great concept.(I too considered using a banana gun but i ended up with a banana/boomerang). But "the voice" scared the s#!^ out of me :) 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000/10 -IGN

Good effort! At first I was disappointed that the banana gun felt pretty generic, but then I beat the level and kept playing! Definitely not bad at all, but there are some points I wanted to touch on:
- You don't remove apples/bullets that go out of view/off of the level. I noticed that when I left your game up in a tab and came back to it randomly lagging.
- Hit cooldown is super necessary since it's not fun that 3 apples hit you at the same time.
- Maybe make the first level shorter so that people can see that you're only using the gun for a short while as a joke.

@defacid, thanks for your feedback! I never understood why my game kept lagging before! Yeah, I tried to make it so if one of the three apples in the bunch hit you, the rest wouldn't impact, but I was kind of stressed for time. Anyway, thanks! Your points are really awesome! :)

This was one of the funniest games I've played this Ludum Dare, though maybe it was because I played it late at night. :P I could see how the voiceover could be annoying, but it entertained me.

The collisions and deaths could be frustrating but I'm guessing that was the point. I managed to beat all 3 levels.

Good and silly stuff! I like the apples weapon and found the audio really funny

May 11, 2015 @ 11:55pm

this was really fun! i couldn't beat the last level, since you have no way to kill them you have to bullet dodge, which is tough. the voice was hilarious!!

Mini Submission FAQ

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

CAN I ENTER BOTH EVENTS?: You should pick 1 event, whichever you think it’ll do better in. If the idea is strong, and everything plays well enough, you can go Compo. If you’re a perfectionist, and would prefer people to play a more polished game, do the Jam. Historically, more games are entered in the Compo, but with more people and more time, Jam games have the potential to be better (that doesn’t mean they are). Many solo participants do enter the Jam.

If you made 2 games, unfortunately, the website doesn’t support multiple submissions per user. To submit your 2nd game, you will have to make a 2nd account. Only do this if you made 2 games. Alternatively, if one game is better than the other, then consider just entering the better game.

CAN I KEEP WORKING UNTIL THE DEADLINE?: Yes! Immediately after the 48 or 72 hours, we do something called Submission Hour. As the name suggests, it’s an extra hour for you to package, upload, and submit your games. If there were catastrophic issues trying submitting your game, or you misunderstood how submissions work, that’s okay. It happens. We’re flexible. If you need advice, check with the folks on IRC. If you need an admin, get in touch.

CAN I KEEP WORKING ON MY GAME?: Oh definitely! You should! But for the sake of judging, keep the Compo or Jam version around. You can include a link to the Post-Compo/Post-Jam version of your game on your games page, but sure your main links are the original version.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate at least 20 games to improve your visibility (Coolness).

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crashes, win condition, or tiny bugs after the deadline. In a sense, this is like “porting” to support more players. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just fixing mistakes you should have caught had you been better rested.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs (http://mysite.com/mygame.zip) and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
