Maze of Doom

by cyrixd - Jam Entry

You play as a knight trapped by an evil creature in an endless maze. But not all is lost, for there are items scattered throughout the maze which will increase your strength. Gather as many items as you can before challenging the boss monster in a duel!

Arrow keys to move.
Space bar to fight the boss.
R to restart.

Duel tips:
* During the duel, you and the boss will trade blows with your damaging stats (sword, fire, water, poison).
* Armor mitigates sword damage.
* If your elemental stat is high enough, it will start to mitigate that source of damage!
* Bosses with low stats in an element take extra damage from that element - target their vulnerability!
* Review the battle stats once you've attacked the boss to learn how effective your attacks were.

* Pay attention to your remaining movement - once it runs out, you must face the boss!
* Try to gather items which exploit the boss' weaknesses, while protecting from his stronger attributes.
* Once you gain enough magical power you'll gain resistances to elemental damage!
* There are powerful artifacts buried deep in the maze...

Known issues:
- Possible to be trapped by walls upon entering new floor due to imperfect maze generation (either push R to restart or SPACE to fight the boss -- sorry!!).

It was a really interesting concept, but I couldn't get past the first few tiles without my browser crashing :c

I wasn't able to beat it after four tries. I just hit a level with no boots. :(

Overall, I would have liked to know how the boss fight worked so I knew how to change my strategy for the next time. I just hit a button and died instantly.

that was interesting, but a bit confusing. Got a couple crashes but it was fine with a reload.

Thanks for the feedback - I've added a description of the boss fight mechanics. Not sure why it's crashing, I've been running it fine in Chrome.

When I tap R to restart, it kicks into full screen mode, but doesn't scale well. The numbers to line up to their icons, etc. Cool idea though. I wish the frequency of boots was higher so you could go deeper into the levels. Maybe reward more steps per boot, but have boots less common on lower levels?

I was having a great time playing! Until I got trapped :(

Dec 9, 2014 @ 4:25am

Cool game! Took me a sec to understand it, but the idea is pretty clever. I never did beat the boss though. :(

Cool game idea, took a little bit to realize I had only a limited number of steps and sometimes I lost the player for a bit when moving to a new screen. Great work, polish it up and release it!

Dec 9, 2014 @ 4:44am

It was nice but the maze seems very cluttered and overwhelming. Nice job ;)

This is one of my favourite games so far, because it is so simple and addicting.
However searching for as many boots as possible seems like a dominating strategy that allowed me to defeat the boss without paying much attention to other items.

I think that this is an amazing game, but the movement seems a little restrictive, maybe make boots give +5?

Anyways, great game

This is pretty cool! The concept of maximizing your dungeon crawl by planning a path through boot icons is new to me, and makes for an interesting experience. Even after your explanation I don't think I understand the boss fight enough to really figure out if I stand a chance, but it's enough to just say "oh, I got pretty far, I probably have the stats for it now." Beat the boss, and it felt like an accomplishment. =)

The game seems to be interesting becasue it ask to establish a good set of attack and defense with elements found.
With a better visual hierachy (finding my knight was a bit difficult ^^),a lighter, well balanced difficulty (i was instant killed 6 times) that game could be strategically challenging.

new concept of dungeon crawling, keep your good job and improving the game design

I enjoyed it! I... still don't know what half the things were supposed to be, and most of them seemed pretty useless except as collectibles. What does green cone represent, for instance? It felt like boots got rarer as you went deeper into the maze, which made sense as a way to bring the game to a close.

Very wibbly wobbly rules (or the description is just too big), couldn't defeat that boss but... I see what you did there and the idea is really interesting and it might evolve to the great game. Or even to board game hmm...

Anyway it was interesting experience, event if I didn't manage to win ;P

I think there is a problem with my Unity Plug-in, as it keeps bugging out half the background graphics, but that doesn't affect the game. An interesting concept, definitely has potential, and though it could use more polish, was very nice to play. Still didn't manage to beat the boss though.

This is a really fun puzzle RPG. I enjoyed trying to move from boot to boot and picking up whatever I could along the way.

It seems to have some scaling issues with fullscreen or screen resizing, and it goes into fullscreen when I press R to restart.

Fantastic concept, not sure if it entirely fits the theme, but original non-the-less! I obliterated the boss, with 180 health left over. Got two health scrolls, both with x2 power-ups next to them!

I DIED A HERO! Strangely addictive, took me a moment to realise I have movement points, after that it became a game of taking the shortest route between doors while collecting boots :P

Awesome work!

Not the most beautiful or complex game I've played this jam but for sure most fun and addictive so far! Great work, congratulations!

I've tried to figure out how battle works but couldn't do it in the end. Sometimes all numbers are falling down to their places and matching, but 1 or 2 is off and I have no idea why. And I'm not sure how the damage is calculated. It's not a problem, though, as I've just centered my gameplay at collecting maximum random stats, completely ignoring what stats do I actually pick up. In fact, I just try to walk as much as I can and when artifacts start to show, pick those. That works perfectly because when you learn how to play the game effectively, it becomes easy to get 200-2000 in every stat and the boss is just piece a cake. And that's exactly why I wish there were more powerful bosses in the game.

Great great idea, i like it ! I could play longer if the game was more complete. Juste a little problem : when i push "r" to restart the game, it also make it fullscreen. It's a little anoying. But the game is still great !

Nice idea, it works pretty well.
Would have loved to see harder dungeons as you progressed somehow, right now it feels like they are all randomized in the same manner.

Just got back to play it again and I must say RNGesus has turned away from me this time. I've started 5 or 6 times just to end up trapped at some point with 200+ movement and crap stats (I kill the boss anyway, but they are crap by my own standards :D).

It's really funny reading comments BTW. I've noticed it for my games too, there are always people who obviously didn't get the base mechanic of a game at all (but write it's a great game anyway usually), people who realized that it's not about picking random stuff, but about picking boots (they are still complaining that boots are getting too rare), and people like me, I guess, who realize that for a level to be successful for you in terms of movement, it only have to have ONE pair of boots. And four X2's in accessible spots.

The reason I'm leaving second comment is because I absolutely love when people actually take time and figure out my games' mechanics. Because usually my games are not too obvious. :D So, in case you're like me - I think I've figured your game. And if you ever decide to expand it, please let your first improvement be a new level generation without locked rooms. :D

Very cool puzzle game, and well balanced as well. I always felt like I needed more boots, which kept it tense. Nice entry!

The elements of strategy were very nice, and the navigation around dungeons was an interesting strategy - unfortunately, the reliance on boots and the 10 square movement cap meant I kept running out of squares to move. Also, the icons weren't really that well explained. R on GameJolt caused the game to fullscreen, so I had to keep pressing esc every time I restarted. I think if you removed the cap on the boots, and maybe gave some additional squares with each boots, and made the icons a little more self-explanatory, this could be quite good.

This is solid entry and I would buy a more fleshed out game of this.

There is some lack of feedback to the player that would improve it, for instance the boss battle should play out and show the back-and-forth damage over time. I also had to read your description a couple of times to understand what the bottom three symbols meant, I'm still not sure how elemental damage entirely works, I think that should be very clear.

Excellent work.

Once I understood to really watch how many moves I had left. It was quite fun. But then I just headed for all the boot icons until I was uber powerful.
Need some sort of visual feedback as you use up your moves.

This is the first game I've played this LD that actually required thinking, a brave and novel choice there sir.
