STS (Simple TopDown Shooter)

by TheScragglyMan - Compo Entry

STS (Simple TopDown Shooter) is exactly what it says on the screen. It is a top-down shooter sporting WASD movement (arrow keys have been included for those that prefer them.

The aim of the game is to survive as long as you can.

Phasing: Right clicking anywhere on the screen allows you to place a Ghost object, right clicking a second time will phase your craft to that point.

Close up shop(ship): Pressing [Q] will allow you to close your ship, closing your ship allows you to survive potential collisions with enemy ships, it doesn't help against enemy shots however and the ship opens up to turn. (left handed players can pres [Right control])

Auto-Fire: for the skilled there is left clicking to fire, for those who want an easier time you can press [E] to toggle Auto-Fire. (left handed players can pres [Right Shift])

Stacking difficulty. The longer you play, the harder the game gets.

please note the game installs as "ludum dare untitled", you can change this at installation mind.

I have included a zip file which doesn't require an install, unsure if it works but its there, also if you vote, please leave a comment about what you think ^^

Hey mate! Simple game,but good!.)

Dec 8, 2014 @ 2:53pm

Thanks, i wanted to keep it simple for my first game and first entry ever, looking at it i wish i had put so much more into it, maybe next time :D

Thank you for taking the time to try it out ^^

Maybe a little bit overpowered feature to teleport but overall its quite fun

Dec 8, 2014 @ 3:08pm

Yeah i agree in hindsight, It would have been nice to have that feature unlock as the game progresses.
Although, having it there from the beginning really allows you to just jump in and play, which was the overall concept. Thanks for checking it out, Means a lot :)

I didn't necessarily dig having to install, but it was worth it. Well done! I agree with @Roktom, teleport was a tad bit overtuned.

This is quite a simple game. Nice sprites! What's the function of open/close ship?

Dec 8, 2014 @ 4:02pm

I will add a "run from folder" to the game download I couldnt figure out how to do it last night was quite tired.

@CatOnMars - There are two answers for this really, but ill keep to how it is in the entry, basically closing the ship negates the damage of playerShip & EnemyShip collisions, You can only move forward and back with the ship closed and turning will momentarily open the ship up. Closing the ship doesn't negate bullet damage though. Only Collisions.

Thank you both for checking out my entry. I expected it to go unnoticed so im made up its getting checked out, Also Thanks for the feedback.

Hindsight is a bitch sometimes, but i plan to correct somethings that i'm not happy with myself once ludumdare31 is over.

Like having ship features unlock based on score. that would have been nice.

Dec 8, 2014 @ 6:15pm

Thanks for the game! Cool graphics and fun! Good luck and Merry Christmas!

Nice game:) without bonuses is not good, maybe game have a bonuses, just my score is 18

Dec 8, 2014 @ 6:37pm

@Eponesh yeah haha the plan was to include some sort of bonus. Time was not on my side. Perhaps i may add some oneday.

The highest score i have gotten was 37. 45+ is when the game really starts ramping up.

@oskardevelopment & @frondeus - Thank you for checking out my game ^^

As other people said, simple but fun game. I liked the ship abilities, original and fun! Congrats!

The phasing mechanics adds some strategy to it, which is pretty cool. Needs some variation to keep it interesting, though... Still, good job!

Pretty cool game would love to see you keep working on it. It feels a bit strange that closing the ship has no downsides. Overall polish level feels great!

Dec 9, 2014 @ 12:26pm

I do plan to work on it, i had to cut alot out to make the entry on time, so focused on simplicity, after ludumDare i plan to release an updated version which has the game as i envisioned it ^^.

Thank you all for checking it out, I was really nervous about entering, but enjoyed the whole process. Made up finally after months of wanting to make something i actually have.

Loving the feed back too, Spurred me to continue working on the title for after LudumDare31 is over ^^

Fun game! I ended up going always having a closed ship as I couldn't see any advantage to keeping it open, and then just rammed into everything that spawned by staying near the top edge of the game, wioth the occasional teleport to save the ship. Dno if it is one hit kills, but some hp indication wouldve been nice :D Great entry nontheless!

Dec 9, 2014 @ 12:51pm

Thank you for checking it out, Yeah the open close ship function was supposed to be limited, the damage indicator was supposed to be highlighted by the ship sprite, i wanted it to start smoking and looking all "beat up" the more you were hit. Rather than have a health icon (wanted the screen as clear as possible). Again cut to make the submission, But im glad you enjoyed it, as i stated above i do plan to release an updated version once .

If you are wondering about the condition for player death,
bullets = x3
collisions = 1 (whilst open), Closed was supposed to be x3 also but that was cut due to time restrictions. ^^
Thanks again ^^

First impression: Please don't make an installer, just distribute the EXE.

For the game itself: Very nice graphics! I love the fog effect. Some of the controls are a bit weird. I don't see any reason why I wouldn't have auto-fire on and the ship closed, so why is it an option? The teleportation mechanic is a cool idea, you probably could made a whole game just out of that. The enemy movement is pretty cool, too.

Dec 9, 2014 @ 4:17pm

@Dallonf, i have included both an installer, and a packed zip file which doesn't require install. (insure if it works mind, but its there)

To answer your question:

A closed ship doesn't negate all damage, only damage through head on collision and only if the player isn't turning whilst "closed". You still have to move out the way of bullets. (but yeah this was supposed to be limited), Mainly i left it how it was because of time restrictions, if i had the time to remove it from the game (beyond simply variable blocking it) id have had time to place the function in completely. Besides, i liked them.

I am planning on releasing all of the features fully implemented once ludumdare31 is over ^^. There was quite a lot i wanted to include but couldn't, and maybe some additions seem overpowered with out being fully implemented, but i say to those who think so... whats your highest score? :P (mines 37 btw)

Thank you for trying it out :D and giving feedback, although i disagree that i should have left them out, i find them fun to play around with and the concept for STS was to create a game that was easy to just jump into , Autofire was kept in for this very reason. (also with the fact enemy bullets can destroy player builts with no self effect) :D

@Mathias234, it can be quite hard, the paths the enemy choose is set randomly each spawn, there are 10 to pick from, some of them are what i like to call "BASTARD" paths. Mainly one where they spiral round from the outside into the center, if you are unlucky enough to have 3 ships spawn doing this ... lets just say i died a fair few times myself.

Dec 9, 2014 @ 4:22pm

^ reading that back.

Sounds overly cocky, its not intended as a cocky comment, just that the game is difficult regardless of those functions existing. ^^

Dec 10, 2014 @ 5:47am

Simple and clear idea, the portal mechanism is new to me; never seen that in a shooting game like this.

As portal and the close ship mechanism works in this game, I feel a bit more like an action game rather than a shooting game playing this...

Good job!

@Team Flashlight

Thank you so much for trying out my game, ^^ im glad you enjoyed it :)

I shall check out your entry also ^^

Nice job! The teleport ability was fun.

Dec 10, 2014 @ 9:29pm

Mate that's really well done for a first go. At least you got the game finished and working, my first try ended up being more of a prototype!

Loved the teleport feature, I can see a whole range of power ups being based on that like if it also cloned your ship and the one you leave behind is controller by AI and kicks ass with you.

Sweet artwork too. You da man.

I'm impressed with the polish. art is wonderful. I love the concept of the second ghost ship where you could teleport. But other than that it got repetitive after 10 minutes you could add more ships and juice it some more.

Dec 11, 2014 @ 12:08pm

@Jed T,
Yeah i really wish i had taken extra time to add some diversity to the game play. So its definitely in the plan for what i'm going to do after this judging is finished.

Little i can say in response really other than I agree and have it noted down ^^ Thank you for checking out my entry though ^^

Dec 12, 2014 @ 1:56am

This is a great start to a much larger game, with more content, levels, ships, power-ups and a health meter. :)

The controls were really good, very solid, I felt like I was in good control of the ship. Maybe add some more perimeters for your "close ship" option? Give it a time meter, or a shield damage display in the corner? Just something more. This feels like a really solid foundation to a really decorated and well-produced final product. :)

Definitely something you'd want to elaborate on post-LD.

Cool stuff! Very simple, indeed, as the title suggests! :) Of course this had the potential to be a lot more, but it goes without saying that the time constraint was a huge factor. I don't care though, since it was great fun to play. :)

Dec 15, 2014 @ 12:01pm

hay thanks guys, i plan on adding to the fun once compos finished with judging, I really hope you continue your game @Zi would love to play it in its entirety ^^

Nicely done. Very simple. I like the teleport, though it wasn't working perfectly for me (sometimes I would teleport and still be hit - not sure why). I'm a little unclear as to why you'd ever want to use the open ship - it seems like if you can be closed all the time, wouldn't you want that? Or is it for players who want the challenge?

I like the design, like the pacing, and I definitely dug the fact that you let it retain my score. That was a nice touch since it's a feature that you didn't need to include. Hope you keep expanding on it and from reading the comments it sounds like you are!

Thanks again for commenting on Natquik. And congrats on finishing your entry! :)

Dec 18, 2014 @ 4:30am

Thank you very much for checking it out @shadow64, yeah i plan on expanding on the idea, get some of features in as intended.

I like that you comment on the retaining score, you know one thing ive been kicking myself about was that i didnt include a method of displaying your score. Major oversight right there.
