Bloody Mess

by karol - Compo Entry

My first ever submission. Written entirely in javascript without using any external libraries. Inspired by one of my favorite games: Crimsonland.

All the graphics are generated. Used cfxr, a microphone and Audacity to generate sounds.

Works best under Chrome and Firefox. Unfortunately there turned out to be some problems in Safari, which I haven't noticed before the submission deadline. I haven't tested other browsers, but I'm pretty sure it won't work under IE.

Use WSAD or arrows to move and mouse to aim/shoot. Try to beat 400 points. If you get bored try typing in IDDQD (all caps) and see what happens.

I wish I had more time to add features, fix bugs and optimize performance. On the other hand I'm glad I can finally get some sleep.

I plan to both improve this game and write many more, so if you liked it you can follow me on twitter @krlkzb.

Cool but the sound bugged and game slowed down a bit for me. (On chrome if that makes any difference) Also a bit bloody...

This is great! The blood splatters make it.

@MCPGNZ I know. Redesigning the player character is one of the todos that didn't make it. 48 hours is pretty constraining.

@Fanttum Sorry to hear that. Sound playback issues are what causes the problems on Safari. Which version of Chrome are you using? I wanted to implement muting, but didn't have enough time to. As for the blood, I went all in once I decided on the title.

Nice game, I like the controls which feel very smooth and easy to play. It gets very hard fast but it's enjoyable. I felt like there was a bit too much on the screen after a while, it became hard to see.

Nice graphics effect and game play. :)

This game have some lag in my Mac safari. But it works very well in Firefox.

@sharpcoder @karlipoppins the game is a bit easier if you play it in a full browser window instead of the embedded iframe. Just click the Web link if you'd like to try.

satisfying and messy game
great job on getting something this functional done in the timeframe.
minor suggestion: instead of a box that says 'HP' how about a little red cross? makes game more visually interesting and removes language barrier.

karol says ...
Dec 8, 2014 @ 5:58am

@jrap I implemented the powerups about an hour or two before the deadline. Didn't have enough time to tweak their looks, since there were a few other things I wanted done before submission. Some elements are a bit rushed and it shows.

Wow, this game feels amazing! You really nailed the controls here. I did seem to lose my player on the screen a lot though.

Fun way to make a bloody spatter pattern :D

Pro tip: don't IDDQD and then leave the game running while you go get coffee.

Thanks for the game!

I would play this to the death with an xbox360 controller :) Audio didn't seem to work on my version of Firefox, apart from a pop here and there...
But this is an intense game, very intense !!

Bloody mess indeed. I feel like more discernible shapes would have helped this a bit, it starts to clutter and blend after a while. The shooting and movement feels pretty good, especially at the beginning, it starts to drop when more and more stuff gets added.

Fantastic graphical style! I think this would also be super fun with a mouse, but it's really hard with a trackpad so maybe I will come back to it when I'm off the laptop. :)

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate about 20 games to improve your visibility.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs ( and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crash or win condition bugs after the deadline (in a sense, like “porting” to support more players). We also allow “typo” bugs. I.e. A true that should have been a false, a word that should have been a different word, very tiny changes that you would have caught if you had more sleep. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just things you messed up last minute. Typos.
