Flailing Arm Ninja vs Pirates!

by RougeRogue - Jam Entry

I was a bit late for the compo so I decided to take it a bit easy when completing it for the jam (which is why I'm uploading this so late). In "Flailing-Arm-Ninja", your main objective is to survive for as many waves of enemy pirates and defeat as many bosses as possible (bosses spawn every 10 waves). So yeah. I hope you enjoy. It's not the most fun or innovative game out there but I definitely learned a lot from making it.

hehey, nice ninja slasher ;]
good music and graphics!

The ninja's agility feels fun and I like dashing and leaping into the fray but it was difficult to see when/how to react to enemy attacks so I ended up just resorting to spamming sword attacks as fast as possible (which is still fun and pretty much how I play Devil May Cry to be fair!). Room there to be polished into something great :)

I like the multiple attacks. I believe the sprites should be a lot bigger, it was hard to understand what was going on! And I could barely see the shurikens at all.

Also it felt too button mashy for my tastes, I like enemies that require different strategies, but the enemies just charge head on...

I really like the music.

Very polished, but the variety of moves felt unnecessary, as the enemies don't require any particular strategy to dispatch them. I got through quite a lot of waves just mashing M :) Ninja vs pirates is a fun theme though!

Nice game, too many controls for me, hard to remember, love the music and graphics. Well done!

The controls are bad, and not diplayed somewhere in the game, making a steep learning curve, but otherwise a good game :)

Controls are displayed on the title screen on the bottom left corner :). But yeah I was planning on making a tutorial level but I didn't have the time sooo... yeah. The result is confusion with the controls. If I continue this game, I'll definitely work on that!

Neat game!
Nice graphics, nice music.
The controls were too many to remember, which is a shame, because it makes the gameplay better.
I must say I just ran arround slashing everyone down without any moves or something.
Very polished.
Awesome work!

It is really nice i like the gameplay and the sound, but i believe there is a bug with your screenshake effect

Dec 9, 2014 @ 4:19pm

Sweet entry. The controls were hard, but they made sense once I got the hang of them. There was a bit of flailing around in the beginning trying to figure them out. The ranged attack seemed useless since I had to be jumping to use it and it didn't seem to kill them as fast as the sword. The white guy was really neat the way he pathed around the entire screen. Great game :).

some hardcore gamer controls here !

Dec 9, 2014 @ 4:48pm

I really like the control scheme as it's really arcade like! Proper job on that one! (: Furthermore I find the game to be a bit dull, seeing it's not really that difficult and the key combinations seem to be a bit verbose. Apart from that nice visuals! (: Overall a 3/5! Good job!

Looks pretty cool. I tried to beat that first boss at wave 10 but I just couldn't do it. Perhaps life bars wouldn't be a bad idea to give the player an idea of how much damage the attacks do. Speaking of which, I just ended up mashing M the whole time since out of all the attacks I remembered from the title screen that's the one that seems to have taken out the enemies the fastest.

There's potential in this though, will you continue working on it?

The only strategy I know in this game is spamming spamming spamming the attack and that didn't get me very far :D Nice visuals, good audio, everything is in order here.

Dec 9, 2014 @ 5:15pm

Terrific! I really don't know how you could do better!

To Ginns: Yes, I do plan on working on it. Part of the reason for it being incomplete is because of the fact that this is my first time actually making a game and intending to finish it and the time limit, of course. I wanna add a camera that follows the player and expand the map. Then, I'm planning on adding more enemies and bosses (right now, there's only two enemies, two bosses, and one easter egg). So yeah, I'm panning on continuing this and improving on it.

There is no mac port, no :(. Reason is that I have the gamemaker studio standard edition. When I got it, it was paid at the time and you could export to mac so I didn't quite worry about it but then I found out I couldn't export to mac anymore and that I needed gamemaker professional AND the module. I'll probably make a mac port in the future.

The controls make the gameplay too confusing, especially because you're confronted by a wall of text as the first thing you see. Maybe start out with just move and sword and slowly add more information.

Controls seemed a little overwhelming (big paragraph isn't the best way to introduce anything in a game like this).

On a random note, the pirate gun looked a whole lot like a dildo. JUST SAYIN

Music deafened me first play though, controls were way to complicated at first, but i managed to get somewhat of a handle on them, Love the art style

great job ^^

Good production values, I like how the screen shakes and tilts! Also snowmans! ☃ ☃ ☃

Dat control list.

Once I figured it out, it's fun! As someone mentioned, not sure how much strategy can be gleaned from it... but the music and art is great and the boss is really really CREEPY. Gonna have nightmares about that guy.

You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate about 20 games to improve your visibility.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs (http://mysite.com/mygame.zip) and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crash or win condition bugs after the deadline (in a sense, like “porting” to support more players). We also allow “typo” bugs. I.e. A true that should have been a false, a word that should have been a different word, very tiny changes that you would have caught if you had more sleep. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just things you messed up last minute. Typos.
