Attack of The Yellow Cubes

by shanecelis - Jam Entry

This is my entry for LDJAM 31. I started with the idea of saving
kitties and keeping bees out. My naturalist friend thought this was a
terrible message and that I ought to seek support from Monsanto for
doing such a thing. I thought about changing it from bees to wasps or
mosquitos. But then I didn’t want to do art, so there you have it.

I have boid swarming in this, they’re attracted to you if you have the
door open. They’re repelled if you have the door closed. On contact
with the door they die. Kill them all and more waves will come.

(This actually isn't a Jam. It's a compo, but I guess I didn't submit it in time. I posted about it before the end of the competition.)

Surprisingly entertaining, and I like the concept! Would love it if you gave more sense of depth so I can know when to close the door.

An interesting idea, could be a little weird for that if its not things like mosquito/baby or bee/cat, it makes no sense for yellow cubes just loving you and want to crush on you. LOLs. But it is a very interesting game and I did spend a lot of time on this, trying to survive. Good job!

Quite fun actually. As kiririn51 said, it is difficult to know when to close the door because you can't tell weither they're far or not.
Maybe a radar would help ?

Is there a reason not to have the door always closed?

Nice idea... Could be an addictive mobile game if completed and had some extra feautures added...

Ohhh, this is actually really fun! :D It's rather scary too; just opening the door to leave yourself vulnerable as the swarm of yellow cubes - the danger - slowly accellerates towards you. The audio is really funny too.

Well done! <3

I really liked this game! Simple, fun and addictive. If you polish it a bit more, it could be a very good mobile game too.

By the way I spent my first few tries to understand how to close the door. I tried to close it using the mouse, arrow keys and wasd. When I discovered it was as simple as pressing the spacebar I felt a bit ashamed, but in this way I had the chance to listen to that funny "ouch" that made me smile a few times.

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate about 20 games to improve your visibility.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs ( and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crash or win condition bugs after the deadline (in a sense, like “porting” to support more players). We also allow “typo” bugs. I.e. A true that should have been a false, a word that should have been a different word, very tiny changes that you would have caught if you had more sleep. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just things you messed up last minute. Typos.
