Colour Blaster

by TimtheBo - Compo Entry

Well, I somehow managed to finish this game, despite not being home half the time.

It is quit simple: point, shoot, kill. The twist however is that you constantly have to change your colour to match the critters colour.

I have no idea wether the OSX version will work, since the bundler does not seem to work for my java version.

The jar version should work the most reliably.

EDIT:

Removed java 8 only features, so it should run on 1.7 and probably 1.6 aswell.

Tried to run it (on ubuntu 14.04) and when I press play I get the following error:

@Gwilym Thanks for the info. Just checked, that method was added in 1.8. I have removed the call. It now works for java 1.8 and 1.7 guaranteed, but I can't test Java 1.6 atm.

I tried playing on OSX using the JAR. It started but I had no character. The hearts appeared, and an enemy I think, but I had no controls. It just kept hitting my invisible player till I died.

I downloaded the jar from the web link due to the applet being security, it didn't work. The jar link here "worked" though, except that I lagged so hard I couldn't play the game, or at least any time I shot.

I don't think it's my machine, as it's a pretty high-end desktop computer.. :/

After playing for a while, an error appeared and the game closed.

It's not a bad game, but is it me or the 4th color is really similar to the 3rd? Both are different shades of turquoise. If the colors are generated randomly, I would suggest to check if they are similar to the previous colors.

The game was very laggy for me everytime I clicked the mouse, a bit annoying but the game was pretty great besides that!

(but the menu was a still a good experience I guess :D )
Hope you'll find a way to make it playable for a lot of people..

Can't get the JAR to work well on Linux. The window started too small and only small squares appeared and didn't move. Resizing resulted in NullPointerExceptions. Getting it full-size on another desktop got me through that and into the game, but when I tried to shoot, it froze and gave up with Audio Device Unavailable.

My setup is unusual, but from reading the other comments, I think there might be a few bugs here as well.

I had an error ingame "helbeam.png" could not be loaded ( they can heal each others ?! o_O ). The game was fun to play but became boring later because you just spend time dodging and cycling color at regular interval. I like the sfx which give a strong feedback.

Avoiding player position to spawn new bugs would limit the spawn-hit frustration I had often.

There seemed to be something weird; I couldn't see anything but what I assume to be blood splatters in different colours? My ship & the enemies were invisible. Windows 7, 32-bit. The idea seems really nice :)

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate about 20 games to improve your visibility.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs (http://mysite.com/mygame.zip) and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crash or win condition bugs after the deadline (in a sense, like “porting” to support more players). We also allow “typo” bugs. I.e. A true that should have been a false, a word that should have been a different word, very tiny changes that you would have caught if you had more sleep. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just things you messed up last minute. Typos.
