Palette

2nd Ludum Dare, finished and submitted!

Palette is a game about colors. It's a cross between puzzle and parkour games.

Instructions:
WASD to move, R to reset if you get stuck. You get around by "linking" to colors. When you are linked to a color you can pass through it, and any colors related to it. For instance when you're linked to red, you can pass through red, orange and purple squares. Any tiles not related to your linked color are solid and can be walked across. Your goal is to get to the white squares in the middle. I'll let you figure out the rest.

Made in Java, so should work on basically any computer, all code and graphics made by me. To play, just download the zip, extract it, and run the Run.bat. Source code is also in the zip.

Note: There is a bug in the game which I haven't been able to target yet. When you run the game, a good amount of the time it will just show a blank window. If this happens, just close it and try again, and again, until it works. And it WILL work, I tested it. I just may take a while to get it to happen. It seems to be having problems loading the level save file, which I'm really not sure how to fix at the moment.

Very innovative idea... I couldn't get beyond the first red block in the bottom left though...

Thanks! And do you mean there was a bug that wouldn't let you go past, or do you mean you just didn't know how to?

I'm a sucker for bright colourful games but unfortunately I can't get this to run. I just get a grey screen. :(

Windows 7 64bit, latest version of java (just updated now)

@ChrisMingay thanks for trying to try it! And, like I said in the main post, that happens a lot of the time. If you keep on running it though it will work eventually.$

@aidinviper were you telling me that? Because I'm the only person who worked on this game. If so then thanks!

There is nothing in the "resources\Levels\" directory...?

@Igor KinGamer Ha ha ha, there are two "resource" folders. One is useless and I just never deleted it. The other is in the "code" folder, that one has all the stuff in it.

Didn't run for me. Just got a blank screen. Screenshot looks neat though.

@Jovoc Thanks! And sorry you couldn't get it to run. I've been trying to find a fix for that, still haven't figured it out yet though.

The game wouldn't run for me on linux. I ran "java com/kalman98/Main". It would load up the JFrame and put a picture akin to the screenshot you have, but it wouldn't do anything past that. I might look into the code and see if I can get it to run :D

My mistake, it runs just fine. The only problem was that half of the time it wouldn't load the JPanel for some reason. It's probably a glitchy Linux thing though. Looks good so far.

I like that the game dynamically changes the enviroment. That is very cool.

jeepracer98: Thank you! I'm glad you were able to get it to work!

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate about 20 games to improve your visibility.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs (http://mysite.com/mygame.zip) and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crash or win condition bugs after the deadline (in a sense, like “porting” to support more players). We also allow “typo” bugs. I.e. A true that should have been a false, a word that should have been a different word, very tiny changes that you would have caught if you had more sleep. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just things you messed up last minute. Typos.
