Ludum Dare 31 — December 5th-8th, 2014 — Theme: Entire Game on One Screen

by Ovidios - Compo Entry

You are playing the unicode snowman, who tries to avoid negative votes and to collect positive ones.

This is my first ever LD-Entry.
It's nothing special and I initially planned way more (e.g. collecting votes while crawling) but that's all I was able to do in time.
The game was made using the *awesome* Love2d (or LÖVE) framework. Sound effects were generated using bfxr (, the music was generated at Fake Music Generator (

• improved menu
• improved win/lose-screen
• improved positive sound pitch
• added timer
• added own font
• added optional speed limit
• added easy way to add you own enemies!
##STEP 1: Make positive, negative and neutral version sprites of your enemy
##STEP 2: Put the sprites in the games "sprites"-folder (C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\LOVE\voteSnowman\sprites on Windows, ~/.local/share/love/voteSnowman\sprites on Linux or /Users/user/Library/Application/Support/LOVE/voteSnowman/sprites on OSX)
##STEP 3: Make a new text file inside the games "enemies"-folder
##STEP 4: paste the code found here ( into it, edit and save it.
##STEP 5: Start your game and you're done!
• added sugar-cane-enemies
• and probably things I forgot to mention... :P

Haha I liked it. The music did it for me. Didn't seem like there was a way to avoid the bad votes after a while though?

Also liked how the screen was mega wide!

Snowman for 2016!

Love the style (and the screen size). The Hitbox on the hanging votes could be a bit smaller though, sometimes I picked up a negative vote when I thought it had already passed me.

Funny concept, lovely graphics, and nonstandard aspect ratio!

The sfx for the positive vote collection is a little too high pitched though.

Hail to the snowman! I like what he (or she!) does with his arms.

Cute graphics. I wasn't sure about the controls at the start. The perspective irritates a bit, but this could be solved with a very small tutorial :)

Fun and cute! The aspect ratio is awesome. Why bother with screen space you don't need, right? Snowman 2016!

I really liked the music and graphics style! The game was pretty unique and fun. You should probably have added a losing condition but I guess time constraints are evil.

The game actually ends when all the votes given in RL habe spawned. If your final results are better than the one "whole game in one screen" had there'll be a "you-win-screen". If they're worse a "you-lose-screen" will appear. I wanted to add a votes-left-bar but I ran out oft time... ^^

The graphics are nice also music fits perfectly, and I love how fast you can go isn't limited... that's one speedy snowman.
I quit it after a while, because nothing interesting was happening anymore and I was pretty far in the +, just read now, that there actually would have been a winning-condition.

Loved the art style and the aspect ratio of the play area. Controls were pretty tight too.

Cute game. :)

Next time, don't forget to set a maximum speed! Though, it was funny going so fast that there were many snowmen on the screen.

I could not hear the music :( (I'm on Windows 7). Praise the Snowman!

Agreeing with @Meta-link about the non-existing speed limit, I actually sat through a whole revolution (the snowman moving one screen each frame)... Simple concept that plays well!

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate about 20 games to improve your visibility.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs ( and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crash or win condition bugs after the deadline (in a sense, like “porting” to support more players). We also allow “typo” bugs. I.e. A true that should have been a false, a word that should have been a different word, very tiny changes that you would have caught if you had more sleep. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just things you messed up last minute. Typos.
