Lich Lordz

by imaginarymonsters - Jam Entry

HEADS UP ABOUT WEB VERSION! It's currently buggy (unreliable collision detection, some audio stacking up and sounding bad) so I recommend trying out the pc installer if you have the time. Going to try fixing it if I can. Thinking I need to use some collision_line checks on my bullets...also you may want to make sure your audio is turned low in case sound effects spike on you. Regardless, it is still playable and beatable.

You are a lowly hedge wizard in the service of the Lich Lord. Tonight at midnight your master decided to have a bit of fun...with your life on the line!

Fire your spells quickly and destroy 100 beasts to please the Lich Lord so you can survive another day.

Robert Mostyn did the chiptune soundtrack. Check out his Bandcamp!

Overall, I'm glad with how the game turned out. A little rough on the edges in places and I would have liked to get more character and enemy animations in. This is the first time I've done a top down engine, so that took most of my time setting up. Luckily I got a lot in last night. By Saturday I only had the player and hand placed eyeball spider enemies in the room with busted effects. A lot changed in the last day!

I made Lich Lordz in Gamemaker, and it seems like audio is working in Chrome again? That's a plus! Pixel art made in Photoshop. Sound effects from bfxr (borrowed from a set I made for Halloween Forever!)

Anyway, I hope you enjoy it. : ]

Yeah, this has a really cool look
Some more stages/waves of enemies and a powerup or two and this would have been perfect!

Loved the art and audio. Was fun to play. I had to stop playing before finishing it due to an audio bug. When I started firing really fast it can caused the audio to become distorted and painful. I was using the web version when that happened though.

Pretty cool game! That's a shame about the web version, I played it without reading the description and then thought I'd found the bug and uploaded a screenshot to imgur:

Actually the web version had a second problem for me as well that you can see in that screenshot. It was too tall. This might have been okay because I could position the scroller to see the whole game area (tho that would mean I couldn't see my hearts) except that for some reason when I moved upward in the game area past a certain point it would for some reason scroll my browser window up and you'd see what you have in that screenshot: not all of the game area in the visible window.

One nice touch you had was the way the character gets visibly dark when he's on the verge of death, that really helped especially when I couldn't see my hearts!

You might consider putting the warning about the web version higher in the description.

Awesome job with the graphics!

@Tortoise and @pkenney
Thanks for the heads up on those! Sorry if any ears got zapped in the process of playing ; _ ; now that I'm getting past the jam-hangover from this weekend I'm going to see if I can patch out some of these web issues. Will definitely move that warning up!

Great graphics and shooting! It sometimes felt like some enemies were immortal, would be nice if there was some feedback that they got hit so I would know it wasn't a bug. I thought the audio did fit the game well and improved the general feeling. Thanks for the game and Merry Christmas!

@oskardevelopment @indie4fun the bullet collision stuff is definitely a bug in the web version. Unless you were playing the pc install version? I'd be interested to know if you wind up checking back. Thanks a ton!

Well it looks great, but the gameplay is nothing special. It was still fun but it ended rather abruptly.

It's a fun shooter. Too bad, the shots don't seem to hit the enemies all the time. Couldn't kill some enemies for a couple of seconds and only after that my shots could hit them. Still a cool game :)

fun game and cool graphics.
But be carefull, only one spawn area made the game too easy...

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate about 20 games to improve your visibility.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs ( and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crash or win condition bugs after the deadline (in a sense, like “porting” to support more players). We also allow “typo” bugs. I.e. A true that should have been a false, a word that should have been a different word, very tiny changes that you would have caught if you had more sleep. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just things you messed up last minute. Typos.
