Square Dance

by chaosed0 - Compo Entry

It's a top-down action game about dancing around squares, and then cutting them down. Get more points the more you take down in one slash. The longer you survive, the harder the game gets.

The game is a bit reminiscent of old arcade-y flash games, which is the aesthetic I was going for. The looks may not be great (who am I kidding, it's squares) but the gameplay is kinda neat, if I may say so myself.

Controls
Mouse - direct character
Left click - dash/attack
Right click - Bomb (with full meter)
M key - mute music

Tools
Code: Javascript, Crafty.js
Music: Ableton Live Intro 9
Audio: Two knives and a mouth

On the flipside, I enjoyed the aesthetic. maybe nostalgia. I like how I WAS the sword. Fast paced, fun action. 18/8 g8 m8.

I really like the game dynamics. Fast-paced action games are the best.

I had a ton of fun with this game. The volume for the attack is maybe a bit high. Good job!

Nice simple fast-paced game. The audio was good! The graphics had very fluid movement, and the blood effect was cool. A bit difficult to control, by my major complain is that "attack" and "restart" are both bound to the left mouse btn, so many times I didn't even have time to look at my score. Good job!

It's like being some kind of little Pixel Ninja. Excellent controls, very fluid and intuitive.

Add some graphics and animation and this'll be perfect.

Very smooth gameplay feel and controls. Very, very fun. But aesthetically a bit too simplistic for me, maybe lacks some visual personality.

Very fun! I love this game. Thank you for sharing it! Very nice movements and use of sound! And it gets difficult fast, so I don't get bored. Those guys are shooting at me! Ha!

Awesome! Smooth controls, simple but very effective gameplay, so many possibilites, such a fun game, and really addicting, definitely my favourite so far. My best score (so far): 10940

Hmm I quite enjoyed the basic mechanic there, feels quite good to actually play. This one has a lot of potential for future development!

This game is extremely fun! Although, why did you need physics in this game? otherwise, I felt like I was a ninja on the go.

Hi there. Move and skid great. Like the music. Found the collision detection slightly unpredictable. Interesting variation of fruit-slash games. Good job!

Neat game. Chopping up the enemies feels satisfying. You somehow made the player square seem like a ninja without actually using any graphics.

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate about 20 games to improve your visibility.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs (http://mysite.com/mygame.zip) and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crash or win condition bugs after the deadline (in a sense, like “porting” to support more players). We also allow “typo” bugs. I.e. A true that should have been a false, a word that should have been a different word, very tiny changes that you would have caught if you had more sleep. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just things you messed up last minute. Typos.
