Ludum Dare 31 — December 5th-8th, 2014 — Theme: Entire Game on One Screen

Back to Browse Entries

by rockford - Compo Entry

A whole game on one screen:
- Land off with your space ship
- Cross the space and avoid enemy probes
- Fly over the town, beware of the rockets!
- Drive an armored Jeep to penetrate the enemy base!
- Walk with your gun in the enemy territory to destroy the nuclear core!!

How to play:
- Press space to land off
- Use arrows keys: left to reduce speed, up/down to move, right to increase speed
- Press X to fire, C to drop a bomb
- Destroy the fuel tanks or you'll run out of fuel!
- In the Jeep, press up + X to fire at the roof
- At walk, press up to jump, fire a bomb on the core to win

The game is hard, but it's by purpose! Enjoy!

Making of:
- This game was made in 15 hours with Love2D on a Mac Book Pro
- Every line of code (around 1000) is made from scratch
- I'm 43 years old, and my real work is to produce video games...
- I'm a big fan of retro gaming, so the game is inspired by retro games
- Sounds from SFXR, art made with PyxelEdit

Oh, another löver there! (^u^)/
The game looked very nice. The controls also feel right and fitting multiple small games on one screen of course fit the theme but wasn't that special. Oh, and it did seem like I wasn't able to collect fuel...

Thanks Ovidios!
To collect fuel you have to destroy the fuel tanks :)

Yup, the game is indeed hard :D
Love the graphics and the sound effects. I also like how this is basically an entire adventure, condensed into one screen. Great work!

Good sound and mood.
Try to develop the idea!

Nice concept! A bit hard for me. I found myself pressing 'I' in the end :D

The third level is not working (the one with the boxes). When I exit the previos level, I dont appear in the beggining of the third one. Other than that, nice game.

This is the most fun games I've played so far. I had to sit for about 20 minutes before I managed to get to through the last part (and it took my about 45 seconds before I figured I was going to use the bomb!), though it was totally worth it. And everything one one screen. Everything about this game feels right. Thanks, I had a great time playing this!

Scramble! Great game, fun LD version too. :)

The switching of vehicles was a nice touch, although the on-foot seemed the easiest, yet was at the end? Might have been a better fit at the start. Still fun though, took me quite a lot of goes before I managed to finish it.

For oscalbal: You appear in the car, and it drive alone. You'd explode on the first crate I believe :)

For Fnkee and Orangy: woaw, great to read! I definitely want to dig in the concept and create more levels.

Yay, Löve!

Took me a while to figure out you pick up fuel by dropping bombs on it ^^ Also that my missiles would lap around the screen. Really interesting to change character: I didn't think a shooter could work with the theme.

Really like the game - it was difficult but fair, so I wanted to keep trying. It's "take off" by the way ;)

Reminds me a bit of the Konami arcade game Scramble... an influence?

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate about 20 games to improve your visibility.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs ( and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crash or win condition bugs after the deadline (in a sense, like “porting” to support more players). We also allow “typo” bugs. I.e. A true that should have been a false, a word that should have been a different word, very tiny changes that you would have caught if you had more sleep. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just things you messed up last minute. Typos.
