Ludum Dare 31 — December 5th-8th, 2014 — Theme: Entire Game on One Screen

neven

by igoramendola - Compo Entry

The objective is to catch the snowflakes with snowman rightful by color.

Use arrows < and > to move the snowman.
Use 1, 2, 3 and 4 to change the focused snowman.

Or use the alternative controls:
A and D to move. U, I, O and P to change focus.

(Use S to disable/enable sounds)

--------------------------------

Made with:
Flash (AS3) - code and graphics
as3sfxr - sounds
Bosca Ceoil - music

--------------------------------

* 13h30min LEFT: I would like to work more on sounds and music, but I need some sleep. It's 6:30am and I have some family commitments in at 9am. And I'm not sure if I'll be back on time to make these changes. That's why I'm submitting now.
(-.-) zzzzz

** 0h45min LEFT: I just got home and I added the keyboard number at the top of each inactive snowman during the game. But I think I won't have enough time to polish more details.

*** I changed the name of the game ('infineve' to 'neven') because I realised that the previous name didn't sound good in Spanish - and I live in Mexico.

**** I've fixed the bug mentioned by @local minimum. According the rules, that kind of bug can be fixed after the deadline. The cause was a variable that I forgot to reset when the game is over.

***** POST-COMPO version: I'll improve the randomness of the snowflakes to prevent two consecutive colors are on opposite sides, and other stuff.

Quite good fun! Harder than I expected, and nice graphics.

At the start it seemed to go way too slow, but you quickly find out that's not the case. Fun game! Maybe add that you can walk outside of the screen to enter it from the opposite side. Or maybe that would've made it too easy. In any case, fun game!

What a lovely game! I love the graphics, the intro music, and the general gameplay idea! My only complaint lies in the snowflakes generation: the game tends to create two snowflakes of the same color at the same moment, but to generate them on opposite side of the screen - there impossible to catch, and it's kinda frustating to lose because of that. Otherwise great entry! :)

Awesome! Very innovative. -Kintinue

Wow that game demanded full concentration. I love the animations on the snowmen, in fact, the entire game has seriously well worked graphics. I got to nine twice and that I'm going to consider a feat.

Things I would consider:

It felt like the random progression of flakes was a bit too random and hence evil. At least for being so early on in the game. What I mean is that if felt like it could happen that there came two flakes of the same color to close in time but distant in space that they'd be impossible to collect. That's not good, it's important to keep the illusion of that it's the player's fault. So I'd put some restriction on that.

I would consider starting with three snowmen or even two and introduce the others as the player progresses.

I think I got a bug, because when replaying some snowmen wanted to run to the right without me pushing that button and they continued until I pushed right.

Then finally, to make this game as addictive as it could be, I think it needs a catchy tune.

I think this was a really great entry, so hope you take these comments the right way. And I think you could make it work with touch controls *wink* *wink* (tap to select and swipe to move).

Hard, but fun. I got to a score of 30! Proud of myself. Loved the sound effects. Loved your art style. Really simple concept, that works really well! Nice going.

At first I thought: "Huh, multiplayer? This might be boring..."
But then I died and realised I'm supposed to play all the snowmen, haha. I like the simple but still intriguing interpretation of the theme. Good fun, neat graphics and gives a nice challenge. Gets hard when your snowman is on the other side of the map. :S

Great game, I really like the snoman sprites! The gameplay is quite original, a bit repetitive, but I enjoyed it. :)

Wow, that's surprisingly hard :) Wish I could reset the snowmen between tries to better memorize colors and numbers.

Lovely graphics and animation! I like it!

Hi there. Lost track of which snowman was which number, well had to think about it, maybe put the numbers on them - at least for first few minutes. Liked the look and feel. Good job!

Thanks all (one more time) for your feedback :))

@mrexcessive thank you for your comment ^_^ I preferred put in the top instead of their body because I felt that on the top was easier to identify when they are close between them.

Nice! Aesthetically pleasing. Gets very hard very quickly.
Great job!

Score: 24! Really nice game, really challenging! Having to setup ahead of time where to place the snowmen really adds a lot to the game. The graphics were nice and it was really fun to play! Well done!

Nice game! Graphics and theme in particular are very good. I found it a little easy after a while, though; I eventually lost concentration and finished on 134. Good work with it!

Looks simple but is actually a lot harder than it sounds since you have to plan your moves ahead of time in order to get a better score but once you get the hang of it, it's a pretty fun game (My highest score was 110 :D).

Thanks, again and again, for your comments. They help me on my polishing process of the post-compo version. Also thanks for your kind words :D

Dec 26, 2014 @ 6:48am

Clever simple design which works really well. Liked the mechanic of having to use the different coloured snowman to catch the different snowflakes. Nice twist on the simple catcher mechanic. As you've mentioned would be nice to see a post comp version which fixed the issue of the snowflakes on opposite sides for same colour.

Dec 27, 2014 @ 4:24am

Scored 63 on this game. Very fun game, and those snowmen are cute :D

Really like the look of your snowman. Challenging and fun game! I Included it in part 18 of my Ludum Dare 31 compilation video series, if you would like to check it out :) http://youtu.be/fGRz-9CpOIg

Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate about 20 games to improve your visibility.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs (http://mysite.com/mygame.zip) and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crash or win condition bugs after the deadline (in a sense, like “porting” to support more players). We also allow “typo” bugs. I.e. A true that should have been a false, a word that should have been a different word, very tiny changes that you would have caught if you had more sleep. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just things you messed up last minute. Typos.
