Tiny Arena, a Simple Arena Fighter in One Tiny Screen!

Tiny Arena is a wave-fighting action game. Each round adds another opponent. See how long you can survive! Features four distinct weapon types for both the player and the other arena fighters, each with unique special abilities to battle with.

Since LD 31 is in December, there's a fifth special holiday themed joke weapon!

Arrow or WASD keys to move
Mouse movement aims
Left/Right Mouse Buttons for special attacks

Tiny Arena was made by Evan Good and is my third LD entry, this time for the "Entire Game on One Screen" theme. The theme made me think of arenas, so I threw together this little idea! I hope you enjoy it! Thank you for playing and good luck to all the other developers!

Tiny Arena was developed using the following tools/resources:
GameMaker Studio Pro 1.3 (with HTML5 export add-on)
BFXR/SFXR sound generator
Audacity audio editor
GIMP image editor

No pre-existing code or assets were used.

This would be brilliant if W was forward instead of up. Was too hard to control. Great weapon effects and weapon sounds. Overall very good.

Very addictive. I love that I can choose different weapons.
Enemies with swords/daggers are much harder than others.

Thanks for the feedback
@sanojian I did try that originally, but the game is designed with "twinstick" controls in mind (I wanted to add controller support, actually, but ran out of time). If aim direction and movement direction are the same, even with strafing (which is always difficult to figure out from a top-down view), it controls like a truck and getting behind anyone is a nightmare. Lesser of two evils, I suppose!

The weapon-clashing mechanic was really satisfying! Oddly I think my favorite weapon was the candy cane.

Pretty cool turn for a top-down shooter (or melee fighter?), needs some work on the graphics, but pretty good overall

Hi there. Nice idea, looks pretty. Like the metallic dings. Found the combat tricky to win. Good job!

It's a great game concept, I like it. Unfortunately, controls are not very intuitive, it's not very easy to aim and I would've expected different behavior of the character when pressing various keys.

I think this is fun to play!
Can change my weapon between waves is good.

I think it's cool that you included a good variety of weapons to choose from. It was fun trying them all out. The speed was a big issue for me. I would have liked the action to be a bit more fast paced. Enough so that my best weapon wound up being the candy cane, just because it made it possible to dodge and come up around behind to attack.

Made it to round 5 with the battle axe. The archers are definitely the hardest enemies.

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate about 20 games to improve your visibility.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs ( and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crash or win condition bugs after the deadline (in a sense, like “porting” to support more players). We also allow “typo” bugs. I.e. A true that should have been a false, a word that should have been a different word, very tiny changes that you would have caught if you had more sleep. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just things you messed up last minute. Typos.
