Ludum Dare 31 — December 5th-8th, 2014 — Theme: Entire Game on One Screen

Back to Browse Entries

by lukz - Compo Entry

Grokageddon is procedurally generated one screen top-down shooter. Playing as snowman, dodge bullets and clear map out of all Grokas to enter more complicated map with more rooms.

After beating all enemies new random map is generated with more rooms. Game ends when no more rooms can fit on the screen (about 8 rooms).

Game is downscaled and pretty slow in browser. I suggest to play PC version.

Follow me on twitter :

AWSD / ARROWS - move
Left Mouse Button - shoot (you can hold it)

It's my first shooting game and first game with procedural map generation so I'm satisfied with results.

I used: LibGDX, Box2D, Universal TweenEngine, sfxr, This Exquisite Music Engine.

Polished shooter, but not very innovative in any way. Controls feel ok to me, overall feeling is good too. Some powerups would be nice to spice it up a little :-)

Nice graphics. I like Fog of War. But it's a litlle bit to easy for me.

I like the pixel graphics. It has a great game feel, although it's not too original

I wish the bullets were faster.

Also it would be nice if enemy bullets are somewhat different than mine so I can tell them apart.

Bullets being the same color as the ground makes everything hard to see.

Fun! But does it get harder? The levels seem to be random. Still a very cool game though!

Fun game, I enjoyed it. Seemed a bit unfair that you died from a single hit.

@komjaur yup, levels are randomly generated. Every time bigger until it doesn't fit on one screen. Then game ends with finish screen.

A little christmas themed shooter, nice idea. Graphic and sound are very good. Controls are super. Overall a good little game.

A little contrast between background/player would be helpful, but other than that I thought it was great! I like the fog of war touch - that combined with the procedural generation really made it feel like anything could be around the corner!

Love the chunky pixel fog of war effect. Always find mouse aim tricky in shooters though, would really benefit from dual stick controls.

Very cohesive game. Everything seems to be all there. I did find one bug, you can start shooting before the 3-2-1 counter finishes

Well done on the procedure generation, something I can not wrap my head around

This is a really nicely executed top-down shooter. The fog of war is an interesting twist, and I like that you can shoot enemy projectiles. Well done!

Very challenging and fun game. I included it in part 40 of my IndiesVsPewdiepie compilation video series, if you would like to take a look :)

Polished shooter and fun.

Sorry for the ramble thought it was interesting and I wanted to share.

Don't take this the wrong way but it feels very "of our time" now I was going to say derivative but that's too negative.

The room generator code is something I've seen in jams for a few years and is becoming almost standard. The sounds from sfxr feel very familiar in jam games and the shooting and gameplay are extremely common. The timed aspect is something as well more common and of course the reference to a non-winning theme as joke character.

All very impressive in the time limit and I want to give big thumbs up. At the same time I'm bookmarking this as the species reference for gamin tropes 2014. In a good way :D

Solid juice on your topdown here - you've been studying your wasteland kings. ;)

One tiny criticism is that the white-projectile-on-white-background thing is a little tricky. Danger should pop more imo.

Since I've played games like this before that just had a lot more features, I didn't get a ton of time out of this one, but I would say you did a great job implementing anyway. Very solid feel.

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate about 20 games to improve your visibility.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs ( and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crash or win condition bugs after the deadline (in a sense, like “porting” to support more players). We also allow “typo” bugs. I.e. A true that should have been a false, a word that should have been a different word, very tiny changes that you would have caught if you had more sleep. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just things you messed up last minute. Typos.
