The War on Christmas just got stupider.
Bucking the theme, I wanted to create a tank battle game inspired by the original 'Battle Zone' arcade game.
It started out that way, and got...christmassy early on.
You should be able to figure it out pretty fast. You're a tank in a pit of abandoned Christmas crap. Are those rocks? Are they coal? Doesn't matter: everyone is naughty in the pit, and the Snowmen are about to judge you harder than an anonymous teenager on the internet.
----
Plenty of bugs: snowmen vanish and get confused. You can flip yourself somewhat easily, if you're determined.
I'll spend the next day or two finishing up. Lots of ideas not added to hit the Jam deadline that will make this a bit more fun: planned for the tank to hold a limited supply of snowballs, and be able to reload from supplies that will spawn around the map. And more.
Also missing: MUSIC. Hopefully I'll get that in before I submit.

Cool Game. . .I guess someone was hoping for the snowman theme.
Fun. The audio left/right balance was a bit extreme when turning.
pon: It's literally at max panning on both sides; I'll tweak it so it's about 50% closer to center and see how that feels.
rain: Good call; originally this was meant to be a twin-stick tank game like the original arcade game, but after finding that wasn't quite a fun, I remapped the controls...and forgot to add WASD. I'll fix that later tonight. *adds to his list*
Great sound and nice graphics. I kept wanting to aim the tank gun up, but I did not find a way to do it.
Its very nice to play and I love the visual effects done on the camera.
Oh my goodness, I played SO MUCH BATTLEZONE when I was a kid! The graphics were pretty nice, and it was the first time I've seen the fisheye lens used that really helped out the game!
Pretty! The sounds felt a bit repetitive, but I really liked the tilty nature of the movement. Good choice not entering in the "theme" category.
Voice scared me at first too! A fun game, really stands out because of the visuals especially - it's beautiful for being so silly.
cool(or frosty) game, but the enemies can spawn too close to you or under you and there needs to be a range around the player that enemies can't spawn in
@andrewk: It's still working as a two-stick tank under the hood; it feels REALLY NICE with the sticks on a 360 pad, so I'll probably put out a Windows version in a day or two to take advantage of that. (Shame the web player can't access the gamepad. Sigh.)
Any new versions, I'll link here and on the GameJolt page, if anyone is interested. Just click 'follow' on there for updates.
Sorry, there's an error with link 2: Failed to create Unity loader.
Really nice graphics. Tight controls/feel. Those snowmen are real creepy once they get up right behind and you turn around!
@Kim: I actually just made myself jump from hearing one spawn immediately to my left. As the dev and the guy that did the frickin' voice, it's such a weird experience. :)
Awesome 3d graphics and the visual effects of the camera lens! & loved the sound effects, gave a chilly vibe atmosphere. 6000! would have gone further but i felt bad cause i was exploiting the system ahaha, i stood on top of a rock where the snow men couldnt get to me! Overall cool game!
Really awesome, easy to play, I actually like the snowman death sound plus graphics looks very neat!
I could say this game is very... cool. But seriously, this game is really well done. I like the graphical style and the saturation of the colors. And there is something about the POV and the sounds that make the snowmen really creepy. The crosshair with the scanning numbers on it looks really good and it feels like I'm in a tank. Well done!
Look good, but it got boring quick. I think making the snowmen get faster and/or allowing them to take more hits might make it a little more fun.
@Asix: Aye, it's currently just a quick arcade thing -- but at some point I'll be adding a smidge more depth to the gameplay. The snowmen already have a variable bit of speed when they spawn, but it's not that big of a difference, in practice. Still have to tweak it around a bit.
Uploaded an update to GameJolt! (The itch.io link remains the original LD31 Jam version, as noted.)
Changes for 1.01:
- ADDED: Additional web controls: WASD for movement; LMB fires.
- ADDED: Sound when firing snowballs.
- ADDED: Sound when snowballs impact.
- FIXED: Snowmen no longer float above the ground.
- FIXED: Stereo panning for tank treads adjusted.
- OTHER: Misc minor optimizations (removal of unused debug code, etc.)
Graphics are stunning. Gameplay and controls are easy! I like the concept, great job!
nice shooter, love the opposing holiday season scenery with the creepiness of the snowman, very funny
It's not very challenging; I wish there was a goal other than destroying as many evil snowmen as possible... maybe you've addressed this already in the post-jam version.
I had to flip myself, just because you said it could be done.
Nice voice work.
Well, the game looks awesome no doubts,
but the theme... ;)
Top notch game! :D I had a lot of fun with it! The snowmen were surprisingly threatening, despite looking like... snowmen.
P.S. Love the use of chromatic aberration.
Graphics are really good! Simple gameplay, but a little too easy I think.
I thought it was a very well thought out game. It was like a zombie apocalypse but snowmen which was cool.
You definitely get 5 out of 5 for mood! Very creepy and immersive game. Great graphics and audio. I got bored of it before I'd finished my first game though, as it just seemed to go on forever. Still, with some gameplay tweeking, this could be the next Doom!
Pssst - You are in todays Ludum Dare to Believe! Check it out - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QPQ6j3uiw8
Nice art! I wish there was more to the gameplay, but the art and audio are very good.
Really cool art and environment going on here! Nice creepy snowman sounds haha. The players turning speed made the game more challenging, but not feel all that fun to play... overall the gameplay was pretty slow! I think if you could make it a bit more exciting, you'd have something pretty novel here :)
Thanks for voting, guys! I put up a post-Jam version over on GameJolt, complete with a leaderboard, slightly harder enemies, an overhead radar, and more!

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate about 20 games to improve your visibility.
MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs (http://mysite.com/mygame.zip) and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.
MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crash or win condition bugs after the deadline (in a sense, like “porting” to support more players). We also allow “typo” bugs. I.e. A true that should have been a false, a word that should have been a different word, very tiny changes that you would have caught if you had more sleep. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just things you messed up last minute. Typos.
Ha, cool concept! Died to snowmans spawning right behind me though :(
