The Barely Competent Thief

by Vacso - Jam Entry

This game is based on the stupidity of others contributing towards your success. You are a thief trying to get to the chest on every level but the Police have been tipped off! They can't, however, detect where walls are so maybe that could be used as an advantage? There are In-game instructions in the 'Help' option of the main menu.

(Music no longer working *sighs* oh well.)

Ok. Anotak, I've found the problem but unfortunately it is more than a typo so I can't fix it. Try replaying. The majority of the time it will work when re-opening the game. That is all the help I can give. :( I apologize.

Ok never mind. I just re-read the rules and in game crashing scenarios I can fix it. I will re-upload.

I installed it and it only displays the first screen about production and doesn't progress into the next screen or room

BoxedMeatRevolution I have just tested the download on my Mac again and I couldn't find the problem you were describing. It was an existing problem for the downloads a short time ago. Can you re-download again to see if it works? If it doesn't then try re-opening the application.

I like it, nice use of limited AI :D

Works fine for me on OS X Mountain Lion. People couldnt play my game neither, so I recompiled using JDK 7, you should try this.
Game mechanics are cute, but the cop in the left room always get me :(

Quite a challenging game, nice job.

I tried this again, and it worked! Fun, I like the idea of a game where you win by tricking enemies into traps (in this case, rooms where they can't get to you from).

I liked the graphics, but unfortunately it was too hard to really get a good run through. Neat anyhow. Nice work on developing a game engine!

Thanks! It was meant to be challenging! Wait? How did you know I used a game engine... interesting to say the least. xD

This game was really frustrating, there was no feedback from what was happening, sound effects even if they where from BFXR would of helped a lot, and adding particles to indicate damage would of helped clarify when you where being hit. Also if maybe once an officer damaged you it would freeze for a second or something, that way you could escape without just running in a straight line for a while.

Thank you p1x3lruckus for the feedback I did realize that some features where not in my engine but I'm adding them now so next time my game will be better. I like your idea about freezing to add more of a challenge. Thanks and I did have sound effects but they broke on export. Another problem I need to fix. :/

TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.

NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.

PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate about 20 games to improve your visibility.

MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs ( and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.

MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crash or win condition bugs after the deadline (in a sense, like “porting” to support more players). We also allow “typo” bugs. I.e. A true that should have been a false, a word that should have been a different word, very tiny changes that you would have caught if you had more sleep. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just things you messed up last minute. Typos.
